Server Requirements.

I'm trying to trouble shoot some problems my communities server is having. After searching around these forums for a while, I've come to the conclusion that it might be a problem with the server specs. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere that tells me what the requirements for a server is. (Can't get the server wiki to load)

So can someone tell me what the reccomended (if any) server specs are?

Depends on player size. Most of the 24 player servers that run decently have 4.4 GHz cpus on them.

Our server runs 18 players. The problem is that our server is struggling to keep a 50% server performance (Via the server browser), and it averages about 15-19 ticks (Via the devicenull.org site) while full. Using the Devicenull.org site, I've noticed several other servers that I've played on averaging 29 ticks while full, with more players on them.

I'm trying to find some exact specs to present to our admins, because I strongly suspect that it's because our server is underpowered for this game.

It all depends on how many slots you want to run. If you are going 20+ then I would recommend going with an overclocked processor (2500k @ ~4.4 ghz or i5 3570k @ ~4.3).

If you plan on running between 16-18 then you could probably get away with a E3-1230 (or v2) or a i5 2500/ i7 2600.

Anything below you could get away with an E3-1220 or equivalent i3.

Mind if I quote this on my communities forums?

    Go for it.

Tempest's recommendations sound about right (he has quite a bit experience in this area). I did put together a list of server performance vs specs a while ago, but it looks like the performance links are broken.

The short answer is that clockspeed is paramount. My rule of thumb is that
    12-16 = >3.0GHz CPU
    16-24 = >4.0GHz CPU

It also helps to have a latest or next to latest gen CPUs (think Sandy/Ivy or Bulldozer/Piledriver).

If overclocking isn't a viable option for you then I would recommend something along the lines of an E3-1270 or something with that range of enterprise CPU's, you don't really need overclocked equipment to run NS2.

Above 20 slots and the needs for overclocked hardware quickly become apparent.

An E3-1270 would suffice up to 18 slots but if you were to go any higher you would see large tickrate drops which will create issues in game (warping, hit reg, FPS).

We just recently upgraded the TBG Chicago server from a 2500k @ 4.4 Ghz to a 3570k @ 4.3 Ghz and the difference is rather large.

Before the upgrade (24 player avg 25 with obvious dips) - http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/servers/97588/74.117.238.135:27016/?date=02/04/2013

After the upgrade (24 player avg 28 with very few drops) - http://ns2servers.devicenull.org/servers/97588/74.117.238.135:27015

If a 2500k @ 4.4 Ghz is having problems @ 24 slots then anything lower will obviously have even more.

You could let us do the overclocking for you by getting a server from us and you wouldn't have to worry about all of this. :)

In my testing you don't need any overclocked machines but you do need good hardware, I run several servers from an E3-1270 and E5-2690, also running a few 18 slots on an E5-2690 in a virtual environment and works pretty well.

Obviously if your choice is an older machine or an overclocked CPU the overclocked one would make more sense but if you have decent hardware there is no need to overclock. Not to mention the unstable state that can accompany overclocking.

I can't actually say anything about getting a server from you. That's entirely up to someone else. I do appreciate you telling me all this stuff, though. :)

Too be honest, I actually ran across your site while searching around for some requirements, and I used the Plan Specifications in my OP on my communities forums. But, like I said, I'm not the one who makes the decision for that. I'm just someone trying to improve the performance for my favorite server. :)

Like I said before, we run an 18 slot server that gets some pretty bad performance when full. I still don't know exactly what the server specs for our server is, but I'm pretty sure they're not up to snuff.

You should check with your server hoster and have them tell you. NS2 is a pretty demanding game so unless the company you are with are running decent machines I can definitely see users having issues.

If you're running an average of 15-19 ticks constantly I can pretty much guarantee there using older hardware, which works for most games just not NS2.

I can't recall exactly who hosts our server, but we normally host games like CS:GO and BF3. I'm still waiting for someone who can actually tell me the specs to reply to my post, so it's kind of on hold until then.
