They rushed the release because the words "FALL" and "2009" kept lingering in their heads for almost 3 years that they were on the verge of having mental breakdowns.

I think its time to make ns2 a F2P
$0 = playing the game as marnines and aliens $15 = allows marines to buy weapons from the armory and allows the use of lerks and fades $35 (or whatever the full price is) = access to everything
Both from 18th November to present date.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> These are the same thing, the SteamGraph version is just drawing a line across the peak points.
As a developer for Black Mesa, I can assure you that this "crunch of expectations vs fans / the need to release something" happens even for FREE games with no budget. As the game design show Extra Credits will tell you, NO game has shipped with all the developers deciding that absolutely everything the game needs is in there. There will still be plenty of people niggling that they should have added one more feature, or fixed more bugs. In some cases, these concerns are deadened by the overall quality of the game. Other times, they know there are some issues, but feel that too much time has been spent in development with no amount of feedback available.
If you think otherwise, at least tell us all what games you have worked on. Game development can be a very different field than people expect it to be.

But yeah, I definitely see how what you're saying applies. There are niggling issues with NS2, but it's functional in a way that I think it was ready for a 1.0 release with an astrisk. It's only really AAA games and games that have been VERY successful in selling their beta/alpha builds (minecraft style) that come out with all those bugs and unpolished sections buffed out. NS release was actually probably more smooth as indie releases go.
UWE couldn't have continued paying the bills indefinitely with no income. At some point they had to get the revenue flowing again, in order to avoid bankruptcy. We know they came pretty close at times, and while I don't know how close they came in the run-up to the actual release, they probably weren't in the most fantastic position.
They're clearly ramping up development, though. They're hiring for three full-time positions, as well as working with more and more outside help. Huze was brought onboard to work on the spectator mode in early August, for example.
Gaming is extremely trendy, and I don't think I've ever seen a major and lasting "resurgence" of interest in a game after a patch, DLC, or major update. Has anyone else? I can't think of any examples.
While a FEW people might come back for a bit to check out new content, I think the decrease in player numbers is more or less permanent.
That's fine, the less serious or interested people moved on to other games. It's the nature of how game releases go.
The captain has been steering this ship into the coral reef ever since NS 1.1. What's new. Power nodes were a really dumb idea; the game was casual unfriendly enough without them.
