I wish I could say I'm sitting on some leaked HL2 information... but I'm not.
It would be entirely foolish of Valve to not make a sequel to the most successful computer game of all time. Personally, I think they'll make a big announcement at the next E3, and HL2 will probably be released sometime around DOOM 3.

And if Valve has their act together, it'll be rather easy for current HL mods to port to their new engine.

Modding NS for the UT2003 engine has got to be the dumbest idea ever, the developers have a hard enough time updating the current HL mod, they don't need the extra work.

Not everyone that plays NS is a rich kid, ie, can afford a 10 gigahz computer with a gig of Ram and a **obscenity** hot monitor to run a high framrate.

SemperFi your not on Lord OF The Rings, I like your support but you do not have to talk wise:)

There are mods in dev. for Ut2k with the same game/backdrop as NS, that is 1 commander (topview) others FPS view and it will contain cars and tanks etc. Can't remember the urls or the names i posted it a while back in off-topic.

No, its not just the graphics, its the MANY MANY other limits that 5 year old technology imposes. I cant even count the number of great ideas that have been shot down because HL wasnt capable of implementing them.

Games are classics not because of graphics and r_speeds but because of gameplay, I know people who still play space invaders and pac-man.

porting doesn't mean abandoning the game.

I wouldn't be opposed to having NS ported. It has enough players that people would get UT2K3 or whatever engine just so they could play NS.

imagine NS on the doom3 engine? /me drools

I believe you are talking about this ut2003 mod Just Ayne? <a href='http://planetunreal.com/mentallic/Imagery_BC.html' target='_blank'>http://planetunreal.com/mentallic/Imagery_BC.html</a> and maybe even this mod <a href='http://planetunreal.com/darkhorizons/' target='_blank'>http://planetunreal.com/darkhorizons/</a>

Error noone is asking for it now, so enough about more work etc.

Also i understand what your saying about gameplay and such, but gameplay can only take a game so far. Sure you may have friends that still play 15 year old games, but the fact of the matter is, not all gamers are your friends. Some people like nice graphics and open areas, and smooth engines. Lets face it, graphics draw many people to a game, especially those with short attention spans who cant read a preview, but opt to judge the game on the screenshots.

Have any developers retro-modded? IE. port their mod to an <i>earlier</i> engine?

Textures/skins can be converted. No problems there.

Worldcraft is the most versatile editor ever. I'm almost positive you could transfer the maps into UnrealEd (At least the map structure. Ladders and crap would need to be re-added, which means the maps would be fixed of all their bugs. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->)

Models... I don't know. It'd depend. If they made the models in 3D studio max it's no problem, because you can make anything for anything in that program. Final issue is code.

There is your problem. Radeon didn't make a good card until the latest model, like the 9700.

Check the stats for games played on GameSpy.

As soon as UT2k3 dethrones Half-Life I'll consent to this...

HAHAHAHA, that will never happen, HAHAHAHA. So no, let's not even do this. Why port it to a game that barely anyone plays according to GameSpy? More people played the original UT then UT2k3 last time I checked... Why not port it to Unreal Tournament then?

As reply to the map and model thing. Maps cannot be closely linked to ut2003, however models can <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> you got slightly confused there lol
  • AngelAngel Join Date: 2002-07-09 Member: 902Members
Duff man the ut2003 star wars mod needs less complicated coding than ns. and that couldnt be ported on to normal ut engine. so dont think about that for ns!

    System Specs:

    • Pentium III 800 MHz processor (PS: THAT'S OLD)

    • 512 megs of RAM (Actually it's less, because of a problem with my motherboard. Reported as 448 megs. AVERAGE)

    • Soundblaster Live! (AVERAGE)

    • GeForce 4 TI 4600, <i>which I got for nearly $150 or $200 dollars off its standard price, from a RETAIL STORE from <a href='http://www.pricewatch.com' target='_blank'>PriceWatch</a>, so it cost about the same as a GeForce 2, so don't whine about money.</i>

My system is only par. Yet I get astounding framerates on UT2K3, even on a map where EVERY BRICK IN THE WALL is a 3D object. I get even better framerates on UT2K3 then I did with Tribes2. That's saying a lot.

And if you still really enjoy saying "I'm sorry we all can't be rich.", then go get a JOB. Too young? What the hell are you even doing playing half-life/Ut2k3 you pre-pubescent n00b?

I highly doubt NS will ever be ported to the UT2003 engine. For one, that'd take another stretch of time of our lives, and I personally would not want to be involved with that. Now, a <i>retail</i> Natural Selection, however, is a different matter. But I would still rather wait and see what Valve have to say in the near future, because I know they ARE working on something, they're just being really bloody secretive about it.

Doom3 is not likely due to the intense nature of its design (Doom3 is currently reported to only have 4 player multiplayer). I would love to see NS on the Unreal engine, but only if I have to pay for it (How weird does that sound?). As a mapper, though, I know extremely little about Unreal editing and am not sure if I care to find out if there's any chance of Valve offering something in the near(ish) future, and if it's as much of a joy to map for as Half-Life.

Merry Christmas everyone, by the way <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ('tis 00:09 here in the UK)

Meh, mapping isn't my thing. I know you can make .dif shapes with worldcraft for use in Tribes 2 for buildings, so I figured you could pretty much convert the maps to anything else. A cube is a cube. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ps2 is an antique, just like the HL engine.... just doesn't have enough dust yet.

i think the half life engine does just fine. the graphics are not bad at all. of course i'm one of those old-school gamers who still gets excited over playing starfox for the super nintendo <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> lol

Bleh, NS for UT2k3 would be horrible. now NS for UT wouldn't be half bad, but I still think it should stay HL.

Ok, sure, HL has it's limitations. That just means you have to design your mod with those limits in mind.

And some of us don't have the hardware to run UT2k2 at more then 10 FPS. And if someone says "Then go get a job and buy some new hardware" - not all of us feel like going out and dropping half a grand to upgrade our computers TO PLAY A GAME. For half a grand a person could buy a junk-car and a couple months insurance.

NS is great for HL. The limits just mean you people who want the LMG, the Light Heavy Machine gun, the HMG, the Super HMG, the LGL, the GL and then the SGL - well Too bad

    ANGEL SAYS:

"Well Hang-Loose if I get permission (I will probably go ahead even if not given) I promise to implement voice communication and the things Half-Life can not do into the Natural-Selection mod for ut2003. if it helps."

You have just exposed yourself as a little disrespectful brat. What, you will create a U2K3 NS-clone even without permission? Man, get some ideas of your own instead. While on the subject of your shortcomings, I suspect you don´t really have the know-how to create any mod whatsoever.

    No flame intended.

Not to mention the fact that a huge portion of the player base is bound to whatever their parents own...

Just remember who owns the legal rights to NS and who was able to outfox Fox before you try going ahead with this idea without getting permission... which I can with 99.99999999999999% certainty say you won't.

Nice avatar, SmokeNova. You play Council of Wyrms?

Back on topic: NS should stick with Half Life. Yes, UT2k3 or Quake 3 or whatever has a nicer engine, but it's not THAT much nicer <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
