Picking a side and sticking to it.

<div class="IPBDescription">..always playing as Alien.</div>Hello all,

I wonder if there are more players out there like me, who picked a side right from the start.
I picked the Alien side, when I bought NS2 on Steam-release, and never went Marines ever since.
Never ever fired a single Marine bullet...just watched a fair number of live-streams and some replays on YouTube, to get familiar with the Marines point of view.

The thing is, when NS2 was announced on Steam, it was the 1st time I heard of it....beats me why so late lol.
But I immeadiatly liked the asymmetrical setup when I watched some vids.
It reminded me of ETQW, which has a similar setup...I played it for almost 3 years and loved it too!
And in ETQW, I also picked one side: the Strogg (Aliens), and stuck to it.
I only played the GDF (human marine-ish) if I wanted to play on that server in particular, but had to even up teams untill next round (so I could switch to the Strogg side).

Turns out my playing-style has stuck with me as well.
In ETQW, I mostly played Infiltrator (stealth class), and Technician (Strogg medic class), and gained so much experience in those 2, that I became a top Strogg-player.
Now in NS2 - after the initial Skulk minutes at round-start - I find myself back as either the Lerk, or a Gorge.
The last one I really got to love, and allthough playing as a battle-gorge usually means I end up somewhere near the bottom of the scoreboard, an Alien victory wouldn't have been the same without me, that's for sure.
I don't mind ending up down low, as long as we win.
I tend so see the whole Alien force as 1 life-form. XD

I love playing the Aliens.

You're also missing out on what tactics the marines have if you only play on Aliens. Me, I go random on any pub server!

    Me, too.

rarely feel like joining a particular team.
But usually I wait until teams are even and than join up so that it is really random and not just balancing the teams.

I'm also pick aliens most of the time. Only go Marine if i can't play aliens on those moment... but i have to say, also Marines are fun. It's less depressing losing as marine then as alien is my opinion :)

I almost always play with a couple of mates (with mumble, but also using in game voice chat to chivvy people along). The main annoyance at the minute is that it's essentially impossible to go marines if you're playing with mates. What I really want is a pre-game squad-up system that will dump me and the 1-4 people I'm trying to play with onto the same side, whichever side, I don't care...

    :)

Tactics-wise you will become a far greater player if you play and command both sides than if you stick with one

The trade off is that you won't be as good of a shot

Funny you bring this topic up. Considering how close each side resembles each other in NS2 (commanders, gameplay, etc), I ALWAYS stick with Marines. In NS1, I'd say I would spread the love pretty evenly. It would depend what mood I was in. If I wanted to just come in and not take it that seriously, I'd go on Aliens where the gameplay was more independent. If I had more time and was in the mood to chat and coop, then I'd go on Marines. That's what kept me hooked to NS1. NS2 just doesn't do it for me. I think it comes down to how horrible the alien commander concept is.

Can't wait for an NS1 mod to NS2.

I stack aliens because there's always at least 3/4 people humping the join marines portal and I'd rather always go aliens than have games ruined by nobody joining (my pc is really fast so I'm usually 1st or 2nd person to load the map on mapchange so I get a free choice)

I had anticipated those comments, but if you play just Aliens long enough, you'll get to know the Marine's tactics for sure...especially when Aliens are losing, it becomes appearant :P
There's no difference in how NS2 and ETQW play, regarding this.

I don't care that I miss the Marine gameplay.
Having played dozens of (tactical) shooters over the years, I've had my share of gunfights.
If a game offers great depth for both sides, I prefer exploring only 1 to it's extend...the side that offers something refreshing, so for me personally, Aliens it will be.
It's also a kind of roleplaying - like as I said, I tend to see the Alien invasion as 1 big life form.
So I set myself the goal to explore every life-form that evolves from it, and be good at every class, to be as flexible as possible.

Still to do: Fade, Onos, and maybe even one day I decide to jump the commander-seat.

Yeah there is no reason not to play marines, they are actually harder to play. I find you are trying to do this to be cool? To add exclusiveness to your gaming? WOuld be like buying a prostitute and only kissing her lol.

Literally the only part of this game I enjoy is playing Lerk. Of course, I enjoy the game as a whole, but only from the perspective of Lerk. So that's what I do 24/7. Ok, maybe in 0.1% of the time I will play Gorge for a bit to help hurry-build and fortify a tricky spot like that horrible room just north-west of the bottom south hive on Veil or the lava falls double res spot on Refinery. But that is only to compensate for the terrible job the map designers did, if Aliens start in the southernmost hive spot on Veil they're GOING TO LOSE 100% GUARANTEED if the room northwest of that isn't defended immediately. (Seriously UW, incorporate some sort of insta-death for marines trying to use that vent!)

I will go Lerk as soon as I have the pres.
I will stay that way forever, ignoring any Onos or Fade eggs the commander may drop (and in the latter case, curse him for being an idiot)
And I will (51% likely) leave any game where the commander researches chameleon without getting silence, or blink before getting spores (see above)

I may be an extreme case and I admit that, but I'm going to play the game where it's most fun, which also enables me to be the great Lerk specialist that I am.

The basic of marine-play (shooting and killing) is much easier then Aliens of course. If you talk about tactics, then allot players makes the same mistake to play alien-style/ COD-style as marine and go alone and are killed right away. Only when you have perfect shooting-skills you can do a little lone-wolf.

This is a very normal thing for Starcraft... however, in NS2 the sides aren't quite balanced so well, and there's only 2 sides, so it just makes more sense to play both in turns while playing competitive, so it's not a thing at the high levels for a team to just play one race. Also, you can't ever play a mirror match in NS2, so if two teams were to exclusively play alien, they just could never actually play eachother, so you're kind of forced to play both.

It's pretty normal to "pick" a lifeform, or a gun, or the command chair respectively, and do that primarily, although I personally haven't really been training one thing primarily for a long time, I mix and match a lot.

His enjoyment of a specific style is 'stubborn, intentional ignorance'?

    What?

Am I intentionally ignorant because I always do my damnedest to get Alien commander as it's the only way I really have a lot of fun with the game? Because I hate playing as an alien foot soldier? Is someone who hates commanding 'intentionally ignorant' because they hate the RTS elements of commanding?

Get your head out of your ass, with a game like this, obviously preferences will pop up.

The OP has 'decided' what he liked best without trying the other forms of playing the game.. so yes that is ignorant. Go ahead and google the definition of ignorant if you want. He even went so far as to google videos of people playing as marines instead of just PLAYING as marines himself! So that is why I called him stubborn.

Preferences are based on personal experiences. Meaning you have actually tried playing as all forms and decided you enjoy a certain playing style best. The OP is saying he only plays as aliens and refuses to ever try marines. Its the most retarded thing I've ever read on this forum and you are agreeing with him.. although you sound like you have tried other forms of the game and decided you like alien kham best , which means you are not actually agreeing with him after all.. so it sounds like it is you that should pop your head out of your ###### and look around.

You think it's retarded that I enjoy MY game the way I want?

I watched many NS2 movies, before I bought it...and so my choice was based on that.
I immeadiatly liked the Alien way of things, and found the Marines a bit boring, so I had a clear picture of how I would like MY game to be.

And so - with that awesome ETQW in mind - I picked the Aliens again.
Again, in MY game, I can do anything I like.
You can call me stubborn, ok...so what?
Can me an Alien, I don't care.
After all, it's also a bit of roleplay for me XD
