<div class="IPBDescription">a semi official dev/community collaborative project</div>Welcome to the official thread for the Gorge Race! mod. This is a semi official dev/community collaborative project with the purpose of providing a guide for people who are interested in creating their own mods... And also to have a little fun!

This mod was originally started as an in house mod a couple of years ago for testing purposes but it was put on the back burner. Now it's time to resurrect it... But instead of bugging the dev team to help me with it, I want your help! More information on how you can help will be posted as the development continues (see the bottom of this post), but below I have a list of features I am looking to add so that should give you an idea of what I am looking for. Most importantly, any features that will be added to this mod will need a guide describing how it was implemented and what it does.

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>Current Release</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
In the current release of Gorge Race! it is just a map. In order to play with a group of people you will need to enable cheats on the server, spawn as gorges, line up at the top of the ramp, and then race to the bottom. Whoever makes it to the bottom first, wins! Respawn at the hive to start again.
Guide: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxv6yLRd0Oo&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Publishing your own mod</a>

<u>Animated prop for the start line</u> *updated*
The startgate animated prop has been added. It currently goes up and down every 10 seconds to signal the start of the race.
Guide: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyHtJkPX4nk&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Creating an animated prop</a>

<u>New Gorge Model</u> *updated*
I've replaced the gorge in this mod with Gorggles. This is only temporary as I would like to have more unique Gorges with custom textures.
Guide: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68AOmnmZcdE&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Replacing an character model</a>

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>Planned Features for v1.0</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

<u>Marine crowds</u>

<u>v1.0 game mode</u>
-No auto balance
-force players to spawn as gorge and disable evolutions
-block players from entering the hive
-no victory condition
-increase egg spawn rate and increase death timer

<u>Add music and sound effects and cinematics</u>
I've added a countdown cinematic which triggers the start of the race by pushing a button on the door. The tutorial can be found <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JHDvSc4txY&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">here</a>

<u>Gorge Movement changes</u>
-increase air time
-more drift control
-increase belly slide max speeds

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><i><b>Possible post 1.0 features</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
custom gorge models selectable by alien buy menu with unique attributes
unique alien evolutions
scoreboard with a win condition
air trick animations
pickups = gorge items to use as roadblocks/traps/attacks
speed boost pads
more maps
allow the ability to join the marines and spectate
physics objects
custom main menu cinematic</i>

As features are added I will be including links to the guides on this thread with credits to those who made them.

*update 11/29*
<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>HOW YOU CAN HELP</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
In my second video I created an animated prop for the start gate... But it could be better! I challenge you to use the video guide I created and make your own startgate animated prop. Post screenshots here or links to videos of your creations. I'll check out every entry I find and may even use it in my mod (user willing)!

Next I want to get started on the game mode and gorge movement code. I want to see what you guys can do.. create a game mode using the details I specified above and send them my way. They could be one minor thing, all of the above, or even some of your own ideas. Either way I'd like to see what you can do! Remember that I want to see guides and documentation about what you have changed and why for other people to see.

    Will you be making the Gorge continue to belly slide if holding the movement key during a bounce? If so, I would totally love trick maps.

    EDIT: And after familiarizing myself with the level editor, I would be glad to start building these maps.

    Should be fun, JimWest has already made a <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=123297&view=findpost&p=2031624" target="_blank">push trigger</a>, which could be used for jumps and speed boost pads?

    I might make a quick map as well when it's ready.

    Count me in. Soon as I get MvM v1 out the door, I'll make some contributions to this.

    Feature Requests:
    Marine Riding an ARC
    MAC Riding an ARC
    Marine Riding a Lerk
    Skulk with a cape
    Marine Riding a small Onos
    Small MAC Riding a normal sized MAC (Master Blaster!)

    ...of course each of the above should handle differently, and players would need a way to choose which "Vehicle" they are.

    After doing some thinking on this, one thing that will be needed (which will be weird) is player's transferring momentum to each other on collisions. Instead of just floating over one another.

    you could use the heat counter bar from the exo suit, to display how hard you are stepping on the gas pedal or your speed

    I love the idea and while I was trying the mod when I was waiting to spawn I typed gorge in the console and my gorge spawned 3rd view and I think it could be nice to be able to see your gorge from above like most of the race games so you can see the others and put up "traps"
    Some screens:

    This looks like a great idea. I'd love to contribute what time I can for it. Any plans to put the mod up on GitHub so we can branch/contribute/submit pull requests?

    Also some kind of tracker (Pivotal or equivalent) project so you can assign tasks out to us would be handy, I can't tell if anyone's started on any of these features yet!

    I've added the first video tutorial. This one is about publishing your mod: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxv6yLRd0Oo&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxv6yLRd0Oo...eature=youtu.be</a>

    The next video is going to be about adding an animated prop, so be sure to stay tuned! I just finished recording it and it should be ready soon

    I have fixed that so it should work if you try the link again, However I just updated the link to the UWE official youtube instead of my own so try that one instead (it'll be a few more minutes before it's processed)

    You should contact Nintendo and see if you can include this music (or a reproduction/remix of it):

    I am about to start work on GorgeCraft again. If you check the thread here - <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=118164" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=118164</a> You'll see that I've already implemented everything you are looking to do in your V1.

    I hope to have a new version of GorgeCraft out by the end of the week, so you can use that as you base for the mod. :D

    Heh.. nice on the cinematic sphinx. Originally when this mod was being developed I created one with gorges coming through the big jump doing tricks and such. Alas I think it has been lost.

    I'm working on the next video which will show how to replace a model with a custom model. In this case it'll be the thirdperson Gorge.

    Soul_Rider.. Yea I've seen that mod. It's pretty sweet and has a lot of features. Are you planning to make it work with the steam workshop?

    Oh sweet, I look forward to checking out the new version. If you are willing to provide instructions on what you've done to implement certain features I'd be glad to use some of it for Gorge Race. However the point of this mod is to be a guide so it would need to be documented. And I only really want to add things to it that are specifically for Gorge Race so as to keep it nice and clean, but thanks for offering your entire mod! heh

    Just to recap, I'm currently looking for community help with the mod specific game rules and gorge movement code.

    Thanks!

    Hi there, Chops.

    I was just wondering, will you also do a tutorial about basic Lua scripting for modding NS2? (for total noobs in programming and modding)
    Right now I am completely lost and have just given up, waiting for your tutorials to save me.
  • ChopsChops UW Technical Artist (and Store Guy) Join Date: 2009-08-06 Member: 68373Super Administrators, NS2 Developer, Pistachionauts
    Gold1: Lua really isn't my forte. Most likely any guides on lua will be created by other contributors to the mod.

    I've added a new video which goes over getting a custom gorge into the game! The link is in the original post now.

    Without owning 3d max or knowing lua is there some other simple way we can attach stuff to models like in your video?

    The only <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=114164" target="_blank">thread </a>i found on the subject is quite old and not much help.

    I'm really intersted in this mod and like to contribute on it. I'm fairly new to NS2 modding but familiar with LUA.

    I have a problem atm I can't seem to get my server to load the map (it always loads summit).

    This is my MapCycle.json:

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->{
      "time": 30,
      "mode": "order",
      "maps":
      [
        { "map": "gr_underground", "mods": [ "6837522" ] }
      ]
    }<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    and this is my cmd for launching the server:
    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->Server.exe -name "NS2 Gorge race test" -config_path "D:\Games\NS2server\gorge\" -mods "6837522" -insecure<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    When I remove the mapcycle.json it get's recreated so I'm sure it's loading the right one.

    Am I missing something obvious here?

    Mindstorm, I am actually not familiar with setting up servers to run it. I usually just test it on a local by running the map through the command console (map ns2_underground). If the mod is loaded you should be able to do this.

    Eventually I want to have a server to host this mod, but currently I do not have that set up.

    Magneto. I don't think so, currently you would only be able to do it either through lua code and/or through a custom model.

    It is. I switched computers and tried to rush it out before the break and paid dearly, heh. I'll have to redo this one. Sorry about that

    Good tutorial, everyone should have a play around with the cinematic editor, it's surprisingly easy to get stuff done without much knowledge, it's great for adding effects and stuff to maps.

    A proper guide on making textures and shaders with all the layers needed would be useful, i've managed to workout the basics on my own now but i know it would have been really helpful when i first started.
