UWE's stance on anti-cheat right now is that consistency checking will eliminate a lot of possible cheats and the community can take it upon themselves to punish offenders when they arise. VAC is being considered for the future, but there's no solid plans to increase anti-cheat measures right now.

Thank you for your consideration.

Lol this is a post I received from a forum moderator after reporting a hacker in this very forums. It would appear that UWE has no intent on getting rid of hackers. They're saying VAC is considered in the future. Who knows how long that will be or if it will ever be. And as far as consistency checking? Really? Do you know how easy it is to bypass consistency? People have been doing it in CS 1.6 and CSS for years. And that's only to prevent wallhacks and material hacks. Not a scripted aimbot... Even states there are no solid plans to increase anti-cheat in the future. Since UWE has no intention on doing anything about it. Is this a free pass to start hacking UWE?

VAC has been enabled since <strike>Wednesday</strike> Thursday.

I'm really sorry, but I have to tell you the world isn't as simple as you think. You cannot prevent hackers.

It's also a considerable time investment to prevent <b>some </b>hacking and you will have to continuously do it. I'm not sure someone like Max has time for the impossible race against hackers right now.

Not it wasn't. Look at the date of that post. That's earlier this morning. VAC is not enabled. Why would a moderator come out and say there is no plan for VAC or any anti-cheat measures in the near future earlier this morning if it was implemented Wednesday?

Please stop trying to raise pitchforks, and create unnecessary drama. It's much easier to make cheats bypass anti-cheat, then for anti-cheats to detect cheats.
EasyAntiCheat, ESL Wire, PunkBuster etc. are all so easy to bypass, and it takes a whole dedicated team to keep updating these to catch weeks old hacks and at worst even a month.
That said, VAC won't help you with anything. It's the most useless anti-cheat system there is.

Now, you're going to create fuss about this with a developer team of a whole 9 people in it?

It was enabled Wednesday, Thursday, and not at all according to a forum mod. What a mess. If it was activated then why am I not seeing any proof of it running in the console or any other display? There's always a way to tell if VAC is running. And so far it hasn't shown itself.

So, a <u><b>forum moderator</b></u> missed a post from the <u><b>engine developer</b></u>, in which he says it was activated on Thursday (hint: maybe he knows a tiny bit more than everyone of us because he's actually developing the game?). I mistakenly said Wednesday instead of Thursday because I got my dates wrong. That obviously means it's all a lie and they're out to get you. *facepalm*

There was no game patch. VAC was activated, not integrated into the game's UI. But why would it say anything about VAC in the console in the first place?

I don't expect hacking is going to be that bad. NS2 isn't a huge game like Counter-Strike, and it's going to attract less people with the skills to produce hacks. As long as it isn't trivial to hack, that should keep most hackers out.

As always, your best defense against hackers is finding a server with a community and admin team behind it.

Because in any other game running VAC, if you join it posts to the console that VAC is enabled. It also says while connecting to a server. And 3rd if you type status in most games running VAC then you will see the VAC status of the server. So not having any information posted visually in the game about VAC running doesn't give me any peace of mind if you can understand that. Especially when I run into people going 50-2 aimboting.

Obviously you never played the first Natural Selection. There were tons of hacks made for that game. More so because it was an HL mod. But nonetheless it's not very hard to code a hack for LUA. People have already done it and abused it and they will continue to. As for finding a community. I wish. I've been looking for one but most every server I join never has an admin actually playing.

Just saying. And it is quite possible the mod team can miss certain things the devs said or have implemented...

Our policy on reporting hackers or posting hacker threads, usually without any evidence what so ever is quite simple. They will get locked and any names in there will be removed. Because it adds nothing to the forums and 9/10 times ends up in flame fests, accusations and most likely witch hunts. Either PM a mod or take it up with a server admin, if you can and if you have actual evidence of a hacker.

I hate "cheaters" with a passion. They are not hackers cause they just download some script and they cheat the game. Modern Warfare 3 is infested with aimbots/wallhacks cheaters that every other game there is one aimbot/wallhacking. As a result, I uninstalled MW3 on my computer and wish I never spend so much money on it from the first place. I believe UWE needs to act like a Iron Fist when it comes to cheaters. We need to add a forum just to report cheaters. These locking down the post for reporting a hacker just gives them more reason to cheat the game. I have no faith on VAC they are busy enough to deal with other games let alone NS2. Please, consider adding a section in the forum where we can legally report cheaters. We must act like the Soviet Union before its fall the Iron Fist and show there is no room for cheaters in NS2.

Simple solution. Enable 1st person POV for spectating.

    Then

    1. Make a thread of confirmed hackers with video evidence and steam ids
    2. It will be optional for server owners to copy and paste all of those users to their servers ban list.

A perfect example of how fast things can go with a small indie developer like UWE! :)

EDIT: As a clarification, my first point in the post you quoted still stands - the forum is not for naming and shaming.

Right now hacking doesn't seem to be a problem at all. It is rare to hear about actual hackers. I think if it becomes an issue, then UWE will do something about it. But just because you met a single hacker that doesn't mean it's a BIG problem that needs to be fixed NOW.
  • BearTornadoBearTornado Join Date: 2012-11-02 Member: 166223Members
In a game that offers no rewards for winning besides playing a good game, and the focus on the game is having superior skill AND strategy, I don't see a whole lot of purpose in cheating.

Do it in a tournament and you're potentially going to get ban-hammered back into console games.

I guess there are still the players who like to ruin it for others in pubs for their own amusement, but I don't see as much incentive for it as I would in other games.
  • ImbalanxdImbalanxd Join Date: 2011-06-15 Member: 104581Members
It is quite entertaining to see how mad you are OP. Do you always get this way when encountering online cheaters? If so, your blood pressure must be atrociously high. You should stop playing computer games, for your health.

    <img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M6DqZHgv_04/TNMVzoFj_BI/AAAAAAAAAGM/h0kHc5Q88kQ/s400/Brulebeforehand.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I also like how you demand VAC be implemented, and then comment about how consistency checks have failed to keep hackers out of the premier games which use VAC.

It's trivial. both with in-game functionality like mods(yep, i hacked through half gameplay features with bare mod, and consistensy checking allows it by default)
    and lua engine hacks.

I have some ideas for consistensy checking fix for server admins, if anyone interested.(pm), but this will break half of skin mods.

Valve will tell you the same thing when you cry about a Counter-Strike hacker, so why is it so criminal here? The games are set up the same way, they're meant to survive on player-run servers. The only difference is that there are a lot of UWE servers to facilitate the launch population and to always have servers to fall back to if there aren't enough player-run servers going up. The thing that's annoying is that there's no real way to find out who a server admin is or where to contact them. You might get lucky with a server that has a URL right in its name, but there are no auto-chat messages displaying bulletins(unless I've been ignoring them), no welcome HTML page that you can pop up, nothing helpful like that to point people in the right direction.

I do think UWE should be responsible for what happens on their servers however. On servers they own, they're essentially the server admins. I'm not even sure that Valve takes responsibility for the things that happen on their official servers. Does anyone know of a case like that?

anti hack is a pipe dream, it really doesn't work. It can help curb things but if people want to cheat they will cheat.

If we don't have 1st person spec people will aimbot and chances are people will wallhack regardless of what you do

The only reliable solution is persistent server adminning to keep out the blatant cheaters, but uwe need to give us the tools to do that, like fp spectator
  • dePARAdePARA Join Date: 2011-04-29 Member: 96321Members, Squad Five Blue
All you need is 1st person spec and a server with admins playing on it every day.

If an cheater would playing on one of the beta servers, im sure he will be banned on every popular server soon.
Every admin of an "old" server knows the other admins so the name of the cheater would be public (not in the forum) soon.

Pls, UWE, give us 1st person spec, that would be a great step forward. Schimmel told me, it was so easy to implement. Where is it? WANT

I have no problem with cheaters. In fact, in the last 4+ or so years I've been playing FPS games, I've never once seen an aimbotter. A few glitchers and speedhackers here and there, but nothing even remotely close to an aimbot. If you really have a problem with a hacker, leave the server and go to another. I guarantee you there won't be another in there because they are almost non-existent in this game right now. Don't worry about it. When it becomes a widespread problem, that's when you need people on it.

Hacks won't be a big deal in NS2. Most of the big hacking communities aren't even going to bother with it.
