7.1 surround sound issue

I run 7.1 virtual surround sound with my G35 headphones. I notice that if I am firing and moving/strafing, the game gets confused as to where the sound is coming from and suddenly I'm hearing the audio of the gunfire jumping from random speaker channels. It sounds like I step out of my body and run about 200 mph around in circles and through me. It's very disorienting. It's like the sound "disconnects" from the player and encircles the player randomly and violently.

Yes, it has been reported during beta, after build 224 the sound system was broken for surround sound.

Nothing to do with 7.1, but with Surround Sound in general.

The reason this happens is because the sounds are played from the playermodel and not the playercamera.

When you are strafing, for example, your playermodel (which is invisible to you, i.e. you can't see your feet when you look down) moves to the side of the playercamera, causing the sound to originate from that position.

This has been a problem ever since SS was enabled. A fix would be to make player sounds originate from the static playercamera, but I'm not sure if that's simple or even possible with how the sound system in Spark works.

So...basically...Surround Sound...the most popular and common configuration does not work with their sound system?

And this is 2012? With their brand spanking new Engine, that they plan to license?

Got a 5.1 set here, speakers, and sound is weird for me to. I swear that it is like it playing the music backwards for some parts.

    <b>rantology</b>
try to set Windows Audio config to 7.1, then open your P531 Arctic config and set it like this (disable virtual 7.1)
    <img src="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/36046461/71.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Then try the game. Mb it will help.

Bump, because I really want this fixed.

I've died a few times now when I hear a skulk behind me, turn around and one hits me from the front. Really frustrating.

I'll just submit a bug report.
    Surround, 5.1 & 7.1 all effected?
    easiest repro steps?

Shoot, reload, swing your axe or melee while strafing. Shooting lerk spikes up and wall jumping used to make the sounds cut out as well.

Thanks for reporting this issue. Can you verify that at the top of the log file it says it is using your 5.1 system? The log file is location at %appdata%\Natural Selection 2\log.txt

I have virtual 7.1 surround sound and also have this issue. I'm always thinking there's other people about when I move because my own sounds come from the direction I'm moving towards.
  • bp2008bp2008 Join Date: 2012-11-28 Member: 173581Members, Reinforced - Shadow, WC 2013 - Gold
Yup. When I hear something in front of me I always wonder if I'm about to be bitten in the you-know-where.

    Is this issue still actual?
  • havok?havok? Join Date: 2012-05-22 Member: 152462Members, NS2 Map Tester
Sure is. I have to set my sound card to 2 channels launch the game tab out and then set it to 7.1 to fix it.

From what I've read, the sound engine (running fmod) hasn't had significant work since Simon left in 2012. There have been a few tweaks here and there since then, so I assume Max has still been making some minor changes.
