Although it is stupid...
so... Does anybody even use the awesome new infestation graphics?

I had them enabled for 1 minute before i turned it off again.

Those Blobs block so much of your vision.

A corridor looks half as big with maximum infestation than with minimal. And those blobs often completely block the vision into vents as well...

So while it looks awesome its a huge gameplay disadvantage in some situations.

Either adapt the new graphics for a better playability or force them on everyone.

I love them. I play for fun, and graphics and features like that really add to the immersion and overall feeling of the game. If I wanted to get an edge then I'd play on 800x600 with all graphics settings turned down as much as possible.

plus, there are only certain corridors that get so bad it obscures vision. I'm thinking of departures in docking specifically, along with vents.

skulks can hide in the blobs as well

how does playing with 800x600 give you an advantage lol.

And it gets bad at alot of places, its simply way harder to see aliens and marines alike.

Also i play for fun too, but its not fun to get ###### by a skulk that you didnt see because of those large blobs...

I think they look awesome as hell and really add to the atmosphere of the game - I guess I agree that if they're going to have them, they should be compulsory for everyone, but.. *shrug*

Is the infestation actually the same for everyone? What tells you that it's not 100% clientside with a randomising algorithm for the pattern. Maybe that huge blob block that you are trying to hide in isn't even there on other player's clients?

Yeah I agree its somethings too thick, especially from commander view where I find it sometimes tough to find cloaked structures.

I assumed it was server side, but seeing as you can turn it off I imagine all the server knows is the area of effect, not the actual look of it. Everyones looks a little different. Thats another reason why it shouldn't be obscuring peoples vision - some people may randomly get less obscuring than others.

it is clientside, which is how you can turn it off. Playing at 800x600 would give you a framerate boost, and therefore a slight edge.

It quite commonly entirely covers cysts as well xD

I like the new infest, adds to the atmoshpere of the game making fully infested rooms look even more vile and dangerous to enter as a marine. Plus, I like the camouflage it provides as an alien. It can be beneficial or obscuring your vision, either way I think it's a nice addition to the game that shouldn't be changed at all!

Besides that, it looks way better then the old overlapping glide animation of infestation.

I love it! The new infestation is absolutely disgusting. As it should be.

I leave it on most of the time, but in comp games I turn it off.

Like many of the graphical settings, it makes the game look gorgeous, but it also blocks vision and lowers FPS. so it's not something competitive players are going to have on (or rather, anyone with a competitive mindset).

just thought i'd say this, but this doesnt belong in the I&S Forums
Oh and, yeah, infestation looks epic now, but it makes my pc pump out blood, instead of results.

Well, since NS2 is mostly CPU-heavy, the fps-gain would be very small (unless you're on a really poopy rig), and you would end up with a net loss because of how much grittier the view becomes at such a low res (since it makes it harder to distinguish stationary skulks at a distance).

Well I've got everything on max on 1920x1080 beside AO which is set to medium (not much of a difference but saves up to 20 fps).

I don't have any problems with infestation, I really like it's look.
It doesn't handicap me or anything, I'm usually the one in the team on first place or 2nd at least.
    Pub playing only, though.

not effectively though, the blobs are client side so you think you might be hiding when in fact you are in plain sight :P

I value that they put some extra effort in to infestation just before release. I think a bunch of reviewers and new players might have thought the old infestation was a bit primitive in terms of graphics. So the effort was well spent. I also welcome any new improvements to infestation because it's such a central theme to the Kharaa, and the original dynamic infestation video was one of the most trivial yet compelling things that attracted me to NS2. I'm a bit shallow like that hehe.

Its nothing but bells and whistles...but hey I am a sucker for both.
Sad to think people turn it off, makes it feel soo much less friendly when your deep in alien territory.

I am a fan and look forward to future tweaks to improve appearance and behaviour.

People seem to miss the point of my thread, its not that i dislike the Infestation, i think it looks awesome.

My suggestion was simply that they should adapt it, as in smaller blobs and less vision obscuring so everyone can use it without a disadvantage towards players with minimum infestation.

Exactly, at first I thought I could be sneaking a put a hydra into a blob and marines wouldn't be able to see it. It would have probably worked as long as they don't turn infestation setting down on their pc.

I will agree with you. I love the way it looks but it blocks too much view so I turn it off to see better.

Old (flat textures that got applied over entire room steadily):

New (actual growth that moves around and forms clumps):

Just give someone obscured by the infestation (that would be visual without it) a blue outline or something...

Yeah, that can be annoying. Trying to figure out why infestation isn't receding in an area and can't find the cyst hidden in the blobs.
