Question About Jetpack/welder

Possible defense.
I once ran into a hive which I thought was undefended onto to find a set of OCs placed ontop of the hive. Trying to think, I ran under the hive and started knifing it, only to have the OCs ontop of the hive shoot downward through both themselves and the hive to hit me.

I was wondering if OCs could shoot in the opposite direction. As in, could you place an OC under the hive and have it shoot upward through the hive to hit the attacking marine?

I don't think so... but it would be useful for the jet packing lamers that lands on top of the Hive and then weld/HMG it.

Hrm. I will do some tests to see if it still works in 1.03.

I'm pretty sure OC's also have a limited firing range, like the turrets, of about +-30 degrees.

Another thing to consider is that, in 1.03 and earlier, the hive has a funny hitbox, and a marine standing on top is basically invincible. If you can't get him crippled before he gets on top, it's pretty well over except for splash damage attacks. So, make good use of webbing to keep the marines off the top!

    yes, this still works

was in a game where there were no Lerks and Marines pushed for Jetpacks early

    bye bye Hive

If you have fades don't bother with splash just blink up onto the hive and land with your claws drawn.

Not sure how well a HMG will hit you while your inside the hive need to test it but its possible their HMG will hit the hive while your claws will hit both them and the hive.

By all means use blink if there's room for you to be on top of the hive. However, some hives are really close to the ceiling, and blinking could very well get you stuck in a wall (at an incredibly critical time, no less). Besides, it only takes one to a little over one full salvos of acid rocket to get the job done. Might actually be faster.

In my eyes, the best way to keep them off of the hive is to not let them past my WOLs that defend the base.. to that end, webbing is crucial. I usually web the ceilings leading up to each WOL that protects the base, and the floor for good measure. In hives that this isn't practical on, like Archiving in Hera.. I build a tower of O-towers (4 will reach) next to the hive (upper level in archiving) and they can kill marines on top of that particular hive. On the whole, however, I find the Jetpack+welder tactic to be pretty lame, and a borderline exploit as there is no real alien defense for it. If your team is not right by the hive, that welder kills it in a matter of seconds (10-15?) and the tide of the game can shift dramatically.

there is pleanty of alien defense for jp welder rambos... oc's on top of hive, webbing ceilings with oc's down below, lerks/skulks/fades getting up there lol you could even paralize the guy out of midair if you were so inclined and able.... webbed ceilings are my favorite because in many hives it causes the jp'er to fall to his death in a hilarious fashion.

Placing OCs on a hive is a pain and a waste of resources, especially if you have to go skulk to get up there.

The JP+welder guy has a welder. You know, that thingy that cuts through webs?

Having a player camp each hive to defend against jetpack rambos it is far too large of a cost to the team. As it is currently, if you aren't near the hive, it'll be dead by the time you reach it. The welder does a lot of damage.

Welder damage could be reduced, but that's not the core of the problem. A jetpack+HMG guy can accomplish the same thing in a slightly longer amount of time. One should not be able to stand on a hive, period.

ehehe i've never seen a jetpacker have the foresight to weld ceiling web, but it does make sense really your only option is oc's on the hive then, or mc's on the front lines, just put them up there mid/late game (when you first see jetpacks) and resources aren't such a problem

Well, in the next patch welder damage will be reduced, so it'll give the aliens even more response time.

I think HMG is actually faster, as each clip will be doing full damage, which is ~3000 (half of a hives health). Only the reload time slows it down. Maybe one clip then weld would be optimal speed. But someone with an HMG is less likely to think of using there welder for the hive, and someone with a welder has to sit there awhile.

You don't need three people, one at each hive, to defend all the hives. You just need one person using movement chambers. A skulk can climb/leap on any hive, a gorge can web it beforehand (they can weld through them, but usually they won't see the webs in time, because they have to fly through whatever other defenses you have, or they'll see the webs and not think to weld them, just run), a lerk can fly up there, a fade can spam them, and an onos can kill there base faster than they can weld.
