Ok I have tried the following steps to address this with no success so far. As far as I know this should be removing all my local configuration data so I think it may be related to something else?
<ol type='1'><li>Remove the workshop folder</li><li>Remove the Natural Selection 2 folder from %AppData%\Roaming</li><li>Disable Steam Cloud sync</li><li>Uninstall Natural Selection 2</li><li>Remove the Natural Selection 2 folder from steamapps\common</li><li>Restart my computer</li><li>Install Natural Selection 2 from scratch</li><li>Check that Steam Cloud is still disabled</li><li>Check that all the mods the server is running are subscribed in the workshop.</li><li>Launch Natural Selection 2</li><li>Set my graphics settings back (obviously all my old settings are now gone)</li><li>Verify that the files successfully downloaded and now all show in the mod list</li><li>Enable the mods and restart</li><li>Connect to the server.</li><li>**Hangs**</li></ol>
I have also tried the following steps with no luck: <ul><li>Reinstall DirectX</li><li>Reinstall C++ runtime files</li><li>Reinstall PhysX</li></ul>
I literally can't think of anything else in my local configuration that could be causing this behaviour - can anyone else provide any guidance? Also a word on whether anyone in the dev/playtest group knows whether this is going to be fixed in 222 would really put my mind at ease - I can't play the game or do any mod development at the moment!

Thanks for the reply Flayra. I asked the question today in the Q&A and the Brians semm to at least know about the issue.
Right now I can only connect to server that do not have mods installed.
I also tried one more thing without success: Running NS2.exe as Administrator.
A quick canvas: is anyone getting this issue who *isn't* using Windows 7 64-bit?
In the dev chat today Brian (#1 I think?) mentioned that there are quite a few fixes for the workshop coming in the next build - it's quite likely this will be fixed in build 222.

That means I can't play the game next build? That would make !7! in a row! I don't have to tell you how I feel about that ;)
I am having this problem almost everytime I try to join a server, same as others I have no workshop folder. An added note when I am forced to crash ns2 and restart it, upon restart I find there are no servers listed at all and no matter how many times I refresh I get nothing. I am forced to restart the game several times before it will list any servers at all.

My NS2 normally works fine, but I happened to notice that if i disable 2 of my 4 CPU cores I get same problem, Connecting into game will freeze to downloading mods.. Both cores will be in 100% use. So after i enable third CPU core this problem disappears right away.
Edit: Also same thing when 1 core enabled. Setting affinity to 1-2 cores doesn't seem to have any effect if system has more than 2 cores enabled. Seems to be related to dual/single core processors.
I think maybe this thread needs to be consolidated. Max is taking your log files in <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=121538&view=findpost&p=1986320" target="_blank">this thread here</a> so be sure to post your log files for UWE to have a look at.

Good idea. I have now merged these two main threads on this topic.
Yes i have already tried running the game as admin, I generally do that anyway as a standard because ventrillo won't work with a lot of games unless they are both at admin level status.
I am also on a Core 2 duo btw. Still have not fixed the problem it started today and I have not been able to join a server yet.
On a somewhat more serious note then just us nerd raging over not being able to play beta. This kind of bug will put a serious hamper on the release of the game if it's not fixed. I know and understand this is beta so I expect bugs like this. But retail customers don't have the patience as beta testers do, this bug needs to get figured out and solved before retail release.
Managed to get into a server with no mods after restarting my computer, the "downloading mods" never came up. The only real change I made was instead of deleteing the workshop folder because I never had one. I made a folder in the location where the workshop folder was supposed to be and named it workshop. Maybe the problem is some kind of conflict with windows not allowing NS the ability to make the folder.

I also have two cores. That seems to be a consistent theme here. Perhaps there's a threading issue? I'll see if it's possible to generate a .plog - maybe we can see where the code is spending its time during the freeze.
Edit: I ran p_logall at the menu prior to joining a server and causing the freeze. For some reason, nothing has been logged to the plog file, at the end of closing NS2 it's just empty (maybe it doesn't start logging until you join a game or never gets around to flushing the output stream?)
Edit #2: For Max: I could try and run a debugger over NS2.exe to find which function the game is sitting in, but I need the debug symbols to get anything meaningful out of it. As it is, I can probably get the memory addresses of the functions the game is looping over most often but they may not be at fixed locations in virtual memory...

That means I can't play the game next build? That would make !7! in a row! I don't have to tell you how I feel about that ;)
Run NS2.exe as administrator, see if it fixes the problem.
It helped senate, but not others.
Edit: Also same thing when 1 core enabled. Setting affinity to 1-2 cores doesn't seem to have any effect if system has more than 2 cores enabled. Seems to be related to dual/single core processors.

Also i'm using an Intel Core2Duo, but that would be weired, if thats the reason.
Good idea. I have now merged these two main threads on this topic.
