Female marines canned?

Hi!

Just needed to know where's the female marine? I remember reading that UWE team wanted to add them sometimes later in the development but on the build 221 new, they say they hit "lockdown" which means no new features or changes to the game. Can I presume there will never be female marines in the game? :(

They still have a plan to do it (though I can't remember which thread it was posted in a while back). However, it is not required for gameplay and is merely cosmetic so it is on hold until after 1.0 ships.

The devs have stated several times that 1.0 is not the end, but just the beginning.
Female marines are coming; it's supposedly something Hugh feels very passionately about.

Female marines are definitely going to be added to the game, but it will be after 1.0

There is going to be a lot of new features, models and maps added after release, so don't think of 1.0 as the final state of NS2.

I feel this should be a bullet point feature on your Steam page. Make sure people know you plan to continue Natural Selection well after release.

    Totally agree.

We take it for granted here that UWE work in this way. They release free updates. They even gave us all free extra copies of the game!

To people unfamiliar with UWE however they will not expect the volume and quality of free updates.

    Advertising that is really important.

One of the first things to make it into the game yet one of the last to be released.

To hell with female marines, i want female aleins! Gorgetts and skulketts need some luvins too!

What I'm worried about the female marine is the hitbox. You can't very well slap a female face on a male marine model. The female model would probably be harder to hit with parasite as I guess it would be more slim in general. Which would, I guess, make the hitbox smaller. It could also be debatable if it could be easier to "hide", get in between more narrow stuff, etc.

For looks, sure give us a female marine. But in game I don't think there would be a reason to use the male marine ever again, which is a damn shame.

    This is a good point.

Have the devs put much thought into this?

So you don't see a problem where the male marine model is bigger than the female marine model?

Even if the only difference is that the skulk has to aim 10% better to hit a parasite from afar, however you bend it it gives the marine 10% more chance to avoid being parasited (and to go down from 3 bites instead of 1 parasite and 2 bites).

How is that close to fair? In all honesty it doesn't take much brain power to come to the conclusion that it isn't.

Shh.. hovers and 2 fett tall.. Please avoid posting again.

Female marines will just have high heels so the hitboxes match up and are identical with the default.
  • WildChickenWildChicken Join Date: 2004-08-25 Member: 30891Members, Constellation
To be fair, I wouldn't expect a combat-ready and trained female marine to be of a topmodel build. Big and bulky and not exactly a sexmachine is what I'd expect.

Have you ever seen the women that make a career in the armed forces? The ones I have wouldn't fit in whatever next top model show!

I'd say the average women in the military is of smaller stature then the average man in the military, as is with the general population. I'm not sure where you are getting this image of 'bulky' women in the military from.

afaik the collision models are rather simple compared to the looks of the models. the marine models should probably turn out equally tall though.

and i agree, please don't make them look like skinny super models. i remember how the league of legends community kept asking for a female tank-role character, and what they got is this:
    <img src="http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/sites/default/files/game_data/1.0.0.146/content/champion/portraits/89.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
that is the official splashart. it's a nice piece of art i guess, but please note how skinny she is. and the pointy highheels! seriously, how can you walk on uneven terrain with that, let alone block a charging enemy with your shield? yea i know, magic or nanites...

The collision models are very simple, but the hitboxes are incredibly detailed, which is pretty frustrating and also a bit unusual I think, especially in a very fast paced game.

I heard they ain't adding Female marines yet because of the performance issues. I mean, the game is already suffering, so what happens when you assign 2 cores of a multi-core processor to handle left and right boob physics?

A hint of sarcasm which went unnoticed I suppose Sops. Of course, statistically speaking the difference might be as with the population in general.

As long as it doesn't affect gameplay, I don't care whether or not they add female marines. Can I get a bow for my gorge?

The men in NS2 are rather scrawny, so having females use the same skeletal frame would not be unrealistic.
