Replace Feign Death with Dying (Primal) Scream

<div class="IPBDescription">"I have been mortally wounded! My brothers, go on without me!"</div>In NS1 Primal Scream was a 3-hive ability. Originally owned by the Onos and then eventually moved over to the Lerk. They would scream, nearby aliens would scream in response and all of them would receive a buff to their movement speed, their attack speed & their rate of energy regen for a short while.

What I'm suggesting is that an on-death version of Primal Scream - Dying Scream - replaces Feign Death as an upgrade in the Shade tech path. Although the upgrade wouldn't do anything while the alien is alive, when they die, they would let out a massive dying scream, buffing all nearby aliens.

One potential aspect of Dying Scream could be that the strength of the buff could vary based upon the alien class that died. So, the Dying Scream of an Onos would give a significantly stronger (or longer lasting) buff than that from a Skulk's Dying Scream.

Thoughts?

I like this, but how would the radius work? Would it go through walls? Vents? Only in visible range?

Maybe change the activate to <50% HP (so dying also triggers this), otherwise it sounds great :)

I believe the original Primal Scream worked purely off of distance and didn't take line of sight into account. I think that'd also be appropriate for Dying Scream

Oooh yeah, Xeno + Dying Scream hadn't even crossed my mind. That'd be an exciting combo. After having thought on Dying Scream a bit more I can think of two main scenarios where an alien would chose it over cloak or silence:
    1. The player isn't too confident in their ability to survive for too long (either they don't think they're particularly good or they are about to face overwhelming odds) but they still want to help the team somehow.
    2. The team is planning a group assault on the marines. The skulk with Dying Scream goes in first, fully intending to get killed. They die, scream, and the other aliens are buffed in time for the assault. (This tactic would work well using Xeno + Dying Scream, because xeno would also soften the marines).

One thing I haven't fully considered yet: What should happen when multiple Dying Screams occur right after each other?
Nothing? Should the buffs stack? Should the buff duration extend?

On a side note, here's one scenario I'd love to see using this upgrade: An alien is killed by a small squad of marines. He screams. From within the room half a dozen cloaked screams respond. :)

Dunno I think it would be funny to do a gorge rush, all with primal scream. As they die the other gorges start bile-ing faster.

Not to shoot down an idea, I just want to make sure people understand what they are advocating.

To everyone who thinks this change is a good idea, how would you best use this upgrade if you were a Lerk, Fade or Onos?

Personally, part of that would depend on whether the scale of the buff was different for each lifeform. If, for example, Onos + Dying Scream = a relatively massive buff that lasts a decent amount of time, Dying Scream would almost become a default upgrade for me. This is for two reasons:
    1) Neither Stealth nor Silence have much use for an Onos
    2) If I manage to die, odds are that there is a decent number of marines shooting at me. So, any nearby aliens need all the help they can get once I'm dead.

For Fade & Lerk I suspect this would be about as popular as Feign Death is with them now. This isn't necessarily because either upgrade is flawed, it's just that both Fade & Lerk get quite a bit of utility out of Stealth & Silence.

I like this idea, promotes teamwork. Definitely would need some kind of effect scaling based on the lifeform.

Could be made to trigger at 10% hp left for example, this would make it a nice bonus in tight situations.

Isn't primal scream going to be an onos T3 ability?
  • zeepzeep Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3367Members
This sounds much better than feign death which kinda sucks.

Better idea than feign death, that's for sure.

It is currently in the code as the tier 3 ability for the Onos yes. However, Tier 3 is pretty much missing at the moment. No Gorge, Lerk or Onos T3 has been implemented, so it is certainly open to change.

Also UWE were talking about a 4th hive Tech path, so I expect to see all sorts of changes from the current systems/plans.

I really don't understand why they would want to force aliens to get 4 hives to tech out, with marines still only needing 2. Both sides have been balanced for aggressive expansion compared to NS1, marine have lost by time 3 hives appear in games (because they fight to prevent it otherwise) let alone 4.

Yeah, I don't get the hive tech tying myself. It led to very uniform and linear gameplay 90% of the time in NS1 with some massive slippery slope problems. Anyways, this might be cool as a near death upgrade.

around 15% hp, primal scream goes off, enraging all your allies. I would also like to see a small buff to the person who has primal scream. Maybe a sort of short berserk mode that lets you fight a little bit even after you "die," you're muscle memory and adrenaline still pushing you forward.

This has absolutely nothing to do with stealth, which is what the Shade hive is all about.

It could be the third Crag hive option?

This would be a good replacement for the current feign death yea, then put it on the crag hive and give the shade hive focus again.

This is a pretty cool idea. I don't like the idea of like 5 primal screams in a row. Sounds annoying. Almost like an alarm clock.
