    The files shipped with the game are unfortunately compiled shaders. You cannot edit them. Schimmel/Sewlek released the original shader code for the Alien Vision a while ago so we could mod it. A shader is just code (i.e. plain text), hence modifiable with any text editor.

    or whereever your "natural selection 2" directory is located.

    Drop it into your "\ns2\shaders\" folder if you don't run any other mods and don't care about doing it properly.

    So it took 20 minutes to find the download files for this (the 2 links on the main page links to said main page) and couldn't get it to work for the life of me. I kinda got it after finding another linked lua but it was out of date I'm guessing for current edition as the heal meter and a couple other ui elements evaporated.

    If it is somehow functional in the current build... is there a simple idiot guide? what/where to download, what to do with it, what to edit, cause from the dozen quotes here its messy and it broke my ns2 =/

    At least steam can repair files, so no loss.

    This is a shader only mod, so if you're getting lua files then you did something incorrectly. You should unzip the link and get DarkVision.fx

    This file goes into

    If you're using the default steam path, otherwise you'll have to find that by hand. You will be overwriting one of the base ns2 files, and after every patch you will have to overwrite it again.

    Good news everyone!
    My mod is now on <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=98879398" target="_blank">steam workshop</a>
    It should start working in 221 hopefully, but I'm not sure how it will work with consistency checks yet.

    Subscribed on the workshop, wouldn't work on a server with consistency turned completely off.

    It entirely depends on whether the server admins allow it or not. By default this mod is blocked, unfortunately.

    Did you activate it in the mods list? Just click on the mod name to activate. The "restart" button only needs to be hit if you want the mods to take effect in the main menu, which is not important for the alien vision mod.

    I used this mod as part of my testing of the mod system and consistency checks, so it *should* be working. However, there are a lot of moving parts with the mod stuff so I wouldn't be surprised if there are some issues here and there. Any information you can give me would be helpful.

    To be honest Max, Im a bit confused. On the All-In servers, I enabled consistency checking. I was then able to use this mod (not via workshop, via manual launch) without the server supposedly allowing it.

    Its not listed in the mods list. I just dropped the .fx file in the ns2/shaders folder

    In some cases (don't know how to reproduce) the alien vision shader isn't recompiled and the cached version is used instead, so if the mod does not work, deleting your cache folder in %APPDATA%\Natural Selection 2\ might help.

    So does this mod work at all? I can't seem to find a server that allows me to use it.

    Yeah, you can't use it on pretty much every server. Consistency checking disables it.
    You need to find community run servers that disable consistency checks on .fx shaders.

    Just want to point out an FYI that this mod will be broken by the update this week. Hopefully it will not take long to fix. Server operators will also need to change the white list.

    Well I am sure you know some secrets for the patch I for one can say that unless whatever they change is even more like how alien vision in ns1 was vs yours or unless they literally implement this mod than me and many others will very likely continue to use this mod.

    This is cool though that they are finally chaining alien vision!

    Ok yea please fix alien vision as soon as you get a chance and let us server operators know how to enable it. This new one is like a mix between the two and now the people that liked the minimal vision are angry and the people that liked the old one are freaking out lol.

    Regardless the sooner we get mimimal vision back up the better :D
