Beta Access is not a part of the steam-preorder.

Steam one costs $25. The site on costs $35. What are the differences? If I purchase the site one, do I get instant beta access as of now?

The beta sign up on the site was actually meant to be closed down for the Steam release as far as I know, they might just have forgot to do it.

Beta access for new orders is now closed. You can pre-order NS2 on the steam store.

We have fixed it - Until a few minutes ago it was possible to sneak beta access by ordering via naturalselection2.com. No one has missed out, if you ordered for $35 in the last few hours while Steam was up you have received Beta access and will receive all the upgrade benefits detailed on the front page.

Now though, pre-orders from all sources (including Humble Bundle once that is back online) will be Deluxe upgrades but will not receive beta access.

Honestly giving beta access to the steam newbies wouldn't be a terrible idea. Just saying.

I'm so glad I read this post. I was considering pre-ordering it thinking I would be given immediate access (aka gratification) to the beta.
I guess I'll just wait until October. Who cares about silly artbooks right? Gamers want to game.

WHAAAAAAAT ? Do you consider giving 45 000 copy of their game for free too much capitalistic ? Please tell me this is a troll !

All I'm saying is give everyone that pre-orders beta access so people will be more inclined to buy the game. Get it?

45,000 people are already in the Beta. We bought the game as far back as 2009, we don't need anymore beta testers!
• Magical_MongooseMagical_Mongoose Join Date: 2003-08-16 Member: 19818Members
It's not a question of having enough testers, but a question of how many more people will pre-order (and hence make the Devs money) if they have immediate access to the (beta-stage) game.
Judging by the posts it seems the majority of issues and bugs have been resolved. I was hesitant in the past to even bother with the beta because of all of the griefing. And now, when it seems like all things seem settled, I can't play the game?

The people who buy it through Steam are generally people who haven't kept up with the development of NS2 and lets face it the performance although its much better in 217 and 218 is still not up to par on lower end rigs. Which are the main Steam users, so giving them beta access, without knowing the history and development leaps and bounds of NS2 will give off a bad vibe.

It is not a good idea to have the masses jump in on the Beta that is still very much a beta in terms of performance (and balance). When they expect a beta that performs a bit better then NS2 currently does. Besides we simply do not have the server infrastructure to deal with such an increase in player count AND provide good/expensive servers (overclocked i5/i7 @ 4.5Ghz)

October is still quite close imho, but at least the devs will be able tog et some more performance improvements in there before releasing an official v1.0

I totally agree with Kouji-San.

People who buy the game via Steam right now may have get notice of the it just because of its recent announcement on steam.
Most of them may not have visited the NS2 forums and their expectations may not be fulfilled if they would be able to launch the beta version right now. They don't know all the ongoing development and improvements of the past. This may result in a crowd of many people just complaining that the game is actually not running smooth on their systems - not the best advertisement before a game release.

Imho NS2 has so much potential and should just be given a little more time for performance tweaks.
There are really enough players with different System Setups in the beta yet to make the tweaks possible.

And those of us who had faith in UWE before the past few hours, can.

Giving beta access to the hordes of people on Steam would upset the beta. Too many people. You simply missed your chance. Live and learn.

Looks like I missed the dingy until October when the steam-ship arrives ;)
It would be awesome on the other hand if you were given a NS2 beta-key once you've pre-ordered and also registered on the forums. That would prevent a good chunk of players from skipping over the development logs, status of performance issues, community posts, etc.
Another layer before given beta access would be to display a disclaimer, something to the effect of: "Remember NS2 is still in BETA. Performance issues will be sorted out and once October hits, you can expect a full-fledged Khar vs Marines experience."
But I can understand how regardless of how you approach it, whiners would come through in droves.

Even if UWE did that, there would still be alot just clicking true the correct steps, and then complain about performance and every other issues the beta still has, expecting it to work flawlessly the first time.

This is a REAL Beta.

Full of Bugs and Performance issues. Not some Release Candidate dressed up as a beta that gets put out by the Big companies.

If most Steam users played this game, even with it's Beta tag, they would write it off without understanding what it's really like being in a Beta.

NS2 does not need that kind of negativity, it needs people to see the game when it is ready :)
