I have an i7 2600, 8gb with GTX 550 Ti. Should I upgrade my video card to get higher FPS? Is there a "demo" or tester version of NS2 that I could download to see if the game will run smooth?

    your processor's default frequency is 3.4 Ghz, which is pretty great for NS2 (is best at 4.00 Ghz or even 4.5)
    The rendering side of things in NS2 is quite efficient actually (if you leave Ambient occlusion off) so your gfx card is fine.

    Your game performance should be pretty ok. What resolution is your monitor and can you perhaps overclock your processor?

    I have a 4870 and I need to play on a low resolution (1024x768) with everything on low to stop my graphics card being the bottleneck. If you don't mind doing that and if you can overclock to 4ghz then you'll get okay performance.

    My monitor is 1080. I don't want to overclock my CPU, I know it will start overheating and the lifespan will shorten. Unless I invest in a decent cooling system.

    So I guess I will just wait until the game is fixed and more stable or until I buy a better CPU and a video card. Thank you.

    No it won't. Read up on the subject if you are interested, if you properly test your overclock you should never exceed the manufacture's recommended operating temperature.

    But yeah, with a stock cooler you will not be able to get anywhere near 4.5Ghz.

    I believe I have that graphics card in my system: along with an Intel i5 (2400) that's not overclocked, 8GB of RAM and an SSD, I'm getting around 45 fps, perhaps down to about 30 fps in the endgame.

    Should be able to manage 4ghz easy on stock cooler with managable temps. 4.2ghz+ if your a lucky ######.

    you won't need to overclock - it will run just fine with that CPU and GFX card.

    I've got a HD5870 and AMD 965 CPU - which are both slower than what you have, and I get 100fps in the ready room - average about 60 in game, which drops to about 30fps if it is a long long game and there is a million infestations and structures everywhere.

    I'm running an AMD 970 with a HD6870 and I'm fetching quite high FPS even during heavy game play moments so a 550Ti should be pumping out a fairly smooth fps, mixed in with that fairly decent CPU you should be fine.

    I use that GPU, and a 3.2ghz C2D, 4gigs RAM. The game runs adequately, maybe 20fps in the most severe late-game combat, typically 40~ in 217. You should be fine.

    The best advice I can give is not to <i>expect </i>anything.
    From patch to patch, things can get way better or way worse. They could hotfix something tomorrow that breaks performance on your system.

    It's likely you'll get an "almost acceptable" framerate on those specs, and if you can afford that machine you can probably drop $35 to play the game...
    If performance isn't quite where you want it, spend less than the cost of the game on a third party cpu cooler and overclock to ~4ghz. If that doesn't help, <i>wait</i>.

    I have a GTX570 and AMD 965 with almost the same fps. Considering the fact, that the i7 has hyperthreading and turbo it should do pretty much the same or even better than the AMD CPUs.

    The game seems to be more CPU intensive than GPU intensive, so I think your computer will do just fine as it is.

    Now, I'd still suggest one improvement! I know you said you didn't want to overclock, but here are my 2 euro-cents....

    i7 2600k is ridiculously easy to overclock. Just install a new after-market cooler (I opted to get a Noctua NH-U9B SE2 for 50 euros) and tweak one setting in bios. I've got my CPU set at 4,5 ghz, which is 32% improvement to stock speed, and so far I've had no problems with it, heat or otherwise... Actually, the reason I chose the 2600 was for the overclocking headroom. Teh Internets is filled with good tutorials, and really, there is little to no effort in overclocking a 2600k ;)

    I have the same graphics card, and a slightly better i7. I don't measure fps all the time, but my game is smooth and fine (I guess that's why I don't care too much about measuring it).
    I wouldn't worry too much about performance, it's very playable with your system specs, especially if you find servers with good performance. I mostly play in the EU, but even if I play in the USA, I have a fine and enjoyable games.

    To the OP: I think your system will be fine. Your CPU is more powerful than mine and I run NS2 pretty great on an i7 920.

    Here is a benchmark for you to see my performance. I think it's pretty useless to say it runs "great" or "fine" because that could mean different things for different people. Also some of the people posting have graphics cards almost twice as powerful as the OPs.

    Specs:

    i5 750 @ 4ghz
    AMD 4870 512mb
    4gb ram

    1024x768 (at 1680x1050 my avg fps drops about 12-15fps)
    All graphics settings low / off.
    ns2_veil
    HBZ server - 10v10

    FPS:

    Min: 1
    Max: 100
    Avg: 50

    99th percentile fps: 23

    I wasn't doing anything deliberate to try and improve fps. I just played normally. If you asked me personally though 50 fps average is just about playable (when I put the res up and it drops to 35 avg it becomes unplayable for me personally). Ideally for me I'd like a 99th percentile fps of 60. 30fps is fine for adventure games, but you really feel it dragging in a fps. There is also some hitching and stuttering that happens that doesn't really show up in the fps graph or avg fps numbers.

    I have the exact same GPU, CPU and RAM and average in the high 40s when a lot of actions is going on and usually hit at 60 early game.

    I Also have an i7 2600k but with a GTX580. Can't say if your GPU will suffice since mine is stronger, but CPU shouldnt be a problem, Game runs very smooth on my System.

    Okay, i7-2600 GTX 550 TI, I recorded a few games on veil, so probably better on other maps. Based on those, I got averages around 39fps, min 13, max 70. Every setting at max, full hd, fullscreen.
