    It might've been the excessive cloning... I mean, marines die. A lot. And every time you'll have to clone a new one. And guess what happens to your brain if you're a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy...

    Right mate, you're about to be a single-digit IQ moron. I'll blame the commander. He's probably got all the fancy stuff like portal guns, nuke pistols and nanite gas on his research screen, but he doesn't understand what those names mean and only gives us shotguns and axes.

    I still hope you guys turn the Flamethrower into something more like the one from Killing Floor ;)

    If it doesn't make a dent, we nuke the place. Clearly. I mean, that's our solution TO EVERY PROBLEM EVER INVENTED. And if that doesn't help, well, we can always build a Nuke firing a Nuke firing a Nuke. WE WILL HAVE SUPERIOR FIREPOWER AND THOSE ALIENS WILL LIKE IT! ;D<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    So yeah the flamer is a bit of an oddball imho, here we have a game that is melee vs ranged and then we have the flamer, which should in theory be one of the biggest ######s up close, but in this case it saps energy and set you on fire so cloak is rendered ineffective. It sure is a hard thing to balance without it giving the marines a too big an edge with ranged and melee range weaponry.

    Also _Necro_ makes a very valid point, those dastardly UWE DEV people have basically stole our nukes and toys, I think this Kharaa is just them experimenting, to see how the human race will cope with it :P

    Yeah, I was always wondering why given all these wonders of technology like nanites and teleportation, wont the commander just scan the hive and spawn few timebombs over there. Job done, no personnel put in harm's way and we can all be home by brunch:)

    Problem is you gotta balance fun and well balance.

    Sure marines could have Nightvision, crazy weapons, but then you need to ramp it up for aliens, to be fun and balanced. So basically after all your suggestions are implemented.

    The onos is now that most basic lifeform and it moves with the speed skulk.

    Now the next tier alien is the Ultralisk with has 1500 HP and 4 x 2 meter long bone arms that crush everything.

    The third tier aliens will be an Omegalisk that have 2000 HP and can teleport.

    You see where this is going right?.

    Its the same in Starcraft 2 Protoss is the insane strong and advanced race, yet their shields can be disabled by an simple EMP their buildings cant fly, yet that backwater terrans can fly their buildings.

    You cant just give one side so much its impossible to balance and make fun.

    The more I think about the practical situation facing the TSF, outfitting marines with crappy gear actually makes sense. The most significant warfare technology that the TSF has is actually the infantry portal. In effect, it a 'Get-out-of-Death' free card (Battlestar Galactica cylon-style) that effectively turns the rules of war upside down.

    More specifically, a large reason we outfit marines today with tons of advanced weapons is because death is forever, meaning that not only do you lose the soldier, but also all of the experience they hold. However, if we make death only a temporary setback (i.e. by dead marines being respawned from an IP), then the biggest penalty from dying is losing the gear that the marine was using when he died. As such, it makes the most sense to arm the marine with the least costly gear that allows them to achieve their objective and save the rest to rearm them once they die/respawn.

    I've always thought of the IP as reinforcements being teleported in from from a ship or base or whatever out of harm's way, rather than a get out of death free card.

    There was actually a theory a while back, or possibly a fanfic, which put forward the idea that the marines are all cloned from a handful of near-perfect human specimens. So pretty much Clone wars.

    When you think about it like that, it seems plausible to try and reclaim a base at little expense as possible (the resources for most equipment is procured on-site) while having people you can merrily throw into a grinder without repercussion. Just provide them with enough equipment to get the job done and no more.

    And just FYI, nuking bases usually pisses off the shareholders. :P

    Science Fiction tends to futurise every aspect of the present day. In reality some things move on at light speed while others hardly change.

    Take Star Trek, they're flying around the universe and talking to aliens, but their 'communicators' are basically flip phones that look old fashioned to us nowadays. The iPhone would blow people's minds in the 1960s, though they might be disappointed we don't live to the age of 200, in moon colonies. Remember 'Space 1999'?!

    challenge accepted. let's see...

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Sentry Turrets have a tracking system for hostiles. Why did nobody ever install this into Assault Rifles?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    tracking is a LOT easier when the background is not constantly moving in unpredictable ways (which is the case for sentries). there is also motion detection at least (obs).

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->we once installed grenade launchers on our rifles<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Shotguns appearently still work like they did during WW1<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    as for fancy weaponry and equipment in general: marines are so desperate, they have to harvest ressources on the battlefield! so it's probably better to have 5 poor shotguns than 1 state-of-the-art one. especially when soldiers are so expendable that they don't even cost ressources themselves...

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->One would think by now we would use at least Infrared goggles, if not a combination goggle of Infrared/Nightvision.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    kharaa can only effectively cloak from visible light when standing still, maybe this is not the case for the rest of the spectrum. they could be almost invisible on infrared or nightvision (enough to make the res-cost too high for the benefit, if there is any).

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Behold the wonder of the NET.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    a net flies a lot slower than bullets possibly making it harder to hit. and if i had the choice, i'd rather hit the lerk with a grenade because lerks (and other kharaa) can bite through metal (extractors etc. are probably made of something very durable) so maybe a net would only slow them down for a short time.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Our Grenade Launchers seem to only have one grenade we can use in the future. Maybe we ran out of deadly gas, napalm and stuff.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    i think some sort of gas-upgrade is actually planned for ns2. but anyway, maybe they are simply imune to all known kinds of gas. for burning aliens, there is a flame thrower (easier to hit the fast moving targets with).

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->We could have made Chainsaw Axes.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    the axe flips open, it might be difficult to make a reliable chain-weapon which you can fold like this. and again, a motor costs fuel which might be too expensive for a tertiary weaopn. and it could fail when you need it the most.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->If we have the ability to build Phase Gates, why don't we invent a weapon that distorts the phase of the Aliens in an unstable way, sending half of their ugly faces hurling into some other plane of existance?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    the phase-tech obviously only works in specifically prepared areas (you need 2 gates, not 1!). creating a cheap and combat-effective weapon with this might be very difficult: you need some kind of gate around the target in order to teleport it. and apparently, the kharaa are not even affected by the stationary gates for some reason.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I have no idea why anyone even in the future would be insane enough to use Gas for a Flamethrower. They clearly want that tank blowing up their soldiers. Not to mention they don't want them to spray liquid fire all over the Aliens, so they just burn to death.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    maybe the kharaa are imune to ordinary fire (hey, they can take several bullets and sometimes survive a grenade to the face!) so maybe you need some very specific kind of liquid/gas to create a flame which actually hurts them.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->We also forgot how to weld some steel plates over our vents. Or put mini Phase Gates into them that send the aliens into a giant death trap we brought with us to instantly shred them.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    aliens can obviously bite through steel and they can also bite through structures which have been weldet before, so marines probably spend their res for buildings such as armories and extractors instead of buying themselves only a few seconds of protection. and apparently, mines are more effective as they can actually kill. phase-gates apparently don't teleport kharaa.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->We appearently forgot how Doors work. Or that they even exist. Because NO ONE. you can weld those big doors shut. i dont know if this is implemented yet (if it is, people rarely ever do it because it often hinders marines more than the aliens) but it is definately planned: you can read about it on www.naturalselection2.com.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Oh and we also forgot to bring Tanks. And Nukes. Mostly Nukes.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    we have ARCs as tanks and EXOs for marines. big traditional tanks are probably not very useful in those narrow maps, fighting against those fast-moving kharaa. as for nukes, i saw them on the todo-list in some video, don't expect them for 1.0 though.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->And don't forget about the jetpack technology that requires no limbs to operate which leads us to believe it is in fact operated by a processor connected wireless to the brain?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also we forgot how to use LMGs and RPGs. Clearly a hail of bullets and a rocket to the face would be pretty effective.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    isn't the rifle a LMG (comparing it to ns1)? maybe RPGs are not as practical as grenades, they don't bounce around corners or into gaps. and they might be more expensive (they accelerate on their own, grenades don't need that).

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Not to mention somebody probably should have found a way to make .50 work with some kind of automatic gun.

    I'd call it the Onos Puncher. Because it would make holes into it :P<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    i guess the EXO minigun will cover this.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also, why did nobody try to interrupt the Aliens with some waves in a different spectrum of hearing. I bet they don't like screaching noises.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    maybe they don't even have ears. and if they do, it doesn't necessarily mean they are vulnerable on any frequency.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also, why can't we throw our Axe? I'd totally attach a wire to it, so I can pull it out of the corpse of a Gorge :P<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    the axe is clearly designed against structures. i also think it takes a lot of training for you to actually hit a target, let alone with the right roation of the axe. it's probably more practical to train other stuff instead, like aiming with your rifle.

    finding solutions for these oddities is somehow entertaining, please keep them coming :)

    Exosuits are the logical progression of tanks. Think about it for a second: a tank is just a way to get a few people with bigger guns and more armor than they can carry into a place where they can blow stuff up... basically, it's a suit of powered armor. Because of logistics, command/control, and the sheer size of a tank, they end up needing more than one person per "suit." In Teh Futar, armor technology has progressed to the point where "tanks" are wearable by a single person again, and that includes dragging around a minigun for the light stuff and a railgun for heavy targets (like, say, other tanks).
