The trailer is out for Prometheus. For those who aren't familiar with the movie, it isn't quite clear yet but supposedly this is a prequel to 'Alien'. Based on the Trailer, I would say that is an accurate statement. Does anyone have any further information on the movie?

If it's a prequel to alien why would there be pulse rifles?
Ripley spends 80 years in suspended animation between the two movies.
So you'd think the pulse rifle wouldn't have been invented in the time of alien.

Well I know, of course...
But there was a reason why Aliens was the best of the entire franchise. This one, has the potential to be crap lacking any kind of kick ass marines!

I prefer alien honestly, both alien and aliens are good, but aliens is a good action movie, while alien is a good horror movie, and I always think the former is in very short supply.
The real question remains... Will there be acid blood (probably not). Prequels usually make me sigh more so, then making me anxious to go see it... Ah well we'll see, as long as it's not going to use the this day and age shake cam and explosive potatoes I think it has potential...
I hope there will be no "Alien" in Prometheus. Two movies with it are enough. (Yes, only <i>Alien</i> and <i>Aliens</i> do exist. Whoever says something different is a filthy liar.)

It is a mashup of a Thompson M1A1/SPAS 12/Remington 870 after all, a well designed military weapon will stick around for a long time. Several countries still use the AK-47 for example.
Yes but only countries that can't afford a well equipped military.
And 80 years would be more like using BARs and M1 Garands than AK47s. AK47s were also produced in massive surplus because the soviet union made millions of them, and then most of the eastern bloc made their own knock offs, and then china has its versions, and they all threw them out/sold them off and replaced them with new versions.
It would seem odd to me if there were pulse rifles in a movie set before alien is all.
Anyways, check out the new trailers and things with this movie. Looks f'ing awesome.
Now taking bets: How many years until I randomly catch it on TV while visiting my parents, since that is the only time I ever watch TV? It'll probably be over christmas.

*<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning" target="_blank">ACH</a>-<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors_40_mm" target="_blank">HEM</a>* Both are hitting 80 years of service. There's also <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911_pistol" target="_blank">this classic</a> which is already hit the 100 mark (though it's rarely used by the US military, it's still in use elsewhere, and many soldiers want it back because the M9 sucks).
Even the M-16 and its derivatives are almost 50, and is expected to be in service for at least another 10 or 20 as there's no replacement anywhere even remotely approaching the horizon. Want something a little more large scale?
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-52" target="_blank">How about 60 year-old aircraft designs</a> which are expected to be in service until at least 2040, meaning just shy of a century old.
Even one of the most <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_F-15E_Strike_Eagle" target="_blank">modern, cutting-edge aircraft we have</a> is expected to hit the big five-oh before being replaced. And I'm skeptical there will even be a replacement then (see the F-22 debacle). Then again at the current rate they're being put in the dirt, they probably won't survive that long.
And this is all courtesy of the country with the most bloated runaway military budget ever.
Such jealousy.
Ridley's vision: 10/10
Lindelof's "plot": 1/10
So many plotholes, with absolutely no understandable connection either to the milked Alien franchise..
but at the same time it had such epic visuals I didn't care. I will remember this sci-fi for looking 100% real. Even the creatures looked like real props and not cgi in any case.

Not sure if actual praise
Or veiled sarcasm
It's entertaining, well acted and visually powerful. Go and see it if you're after an all round sci-fi adventure.
It's a film about exploration - of the origins of man and the meaning of life. Well there isn't really any exploration because this is the year 2086 or something so they can simply park their spaceship in the car park next to the origins of man kind. I forgive them for that because it's clear the focus is not on the discovery, but on what to do about what they discover and what that means for each character.
There are action and horror elements but it's a sci-fi adventure. By modern standards it isn't a scary or a violent film at all. Which is a shame because some of the best scenes are the action/medical-horror ones!
It could be the script or how it's edited, anyway film is <i>messy</i>.
There are too many characters and hardly any character development. None of the relationships are convincing and they add nothing to the film. All of the characters are one dimensional and implausibly stupid at times - not in the usual sci-fi sense of 'OMG <i>real</i> scientists wouldn't do that!' - they're just mentally retarded, and generally unintelligent. Terrible, awful, traumatising things happen to them, but 1 minute later they're back to normal! Motivation didn't seem important to the script writer...things just happen without any build up. Characters make life changing decisions almost randomly. There are plot twists which have no effect because the film makes it hard to care about any of it's characters.
Basically they should have cut the superfluous scenes, focused on only a few characters, and then built up suspense for the key scenes. What they put together is frustrating simply because it could so easily have been excellent.
Director special edition maybe?
I doubt this is what you meant, but are you saying that the Jurassic Park theme wasn't ALL KINDS OF AWESOME?
