Voogru's Ns Server-in My Opinion The Best Server

<div class="IPBDescription">Voogru's NS server-the best</div> Much to often I see people post on this forum about how Voogru's server is "cheating", "unbalanced" or "crap".

This is an AMAZINGLY unfair assessment.

I found out about voogru's server about 2 months ago when someone posted about it saying it was a "piece of crap full of llamers and cheaters, the marines always win because they can get health with their ammo!".

I then saw many other people post along similar lines, sprouting off the many evils of the server.....after reading them, I was firmly convinced that voogru's server must be trash, garbage and a haven for cheaters.......I was however curious, so I decided to go and check it out.

The reality of the server could NOT be further from the truth.

FIRST OFF: I just want to say that it is VERY balanced. Marines have some changes, aliens have some changes-BUT these changes are not something made for cheating-they are to make the game more fun. They also aren’t "laser beam nukes and remote controlled reindeer" as someone called it earlier today......I play there constantly(only NS server I play on anymore) and the victories are split almost 50/50 between the marines and the aliens(a log set up by one of the admins last week showed the official statistic showed aliens won 47% of the time, and marines 53% of the time).

The "changes" to the server are as follows.

Marines can get health from their armory's.

People think this has HUGE balance implications.......it doesn’t.

It isn’t as if they can walk around the map, get sliced to 1 HP then go back to base and get full armor/health.

They only give health.

ALSO it is not like a medpack...you don’t get 50 health per use.

You get TWO health per use.......it takes quite a while to heal.

If a fade or someone is acid rocketing your base while you try to heal it doesn’t matter that you can heal, your still dead.

If a marine is badly hurt he may go all the way back to the nearest base, heal then go out again.....

Time wise this DOSENT give the marines an advantage, as by the time they go there and back, they could of died and respawned....plus the healed marine is still down in armor.

This makes the game more fun, but doesn’t have major balance changes.

When an observatory is built, the marines can also get nightsight.

From my experience, this is worthless...........I see no use in it at all(for help or harm)-but I know a few marines who swear by it heh.

Aliens have more radical changes, HOWEVER as I mentioned above, they are balanced, as the victories are pretty evenly split.

When an alien dies, they loose 25% of their resources(which I will from now on refer to as r's), which go into a random hive.

Any alien can then go to that hive, "use" it, and get those r's for themselves.

The hive does have some slight "seepage" and a little R's is lost on the death, and a little over a time.

Aliens can voluntarily give r's to another player, or to a hive.

Edit: I forgot to mention one LARGE change:

There are no scores-at all

All scores are shown as "zero", it dosent matter how many kills you get, or how many times you die, its a team effort.

This encourages teamwork-gorges often get the protection they deserve, instead of skulks rushing off to go suicide in their base...

Now you MAY think that loosing 25% of your r's on death is crippling, and makes it so everyone is afraid to die-I didn’t like the change either, however in PRACTICE-people still are as brave as before, if a bit smarter and cautious-it is NOT the case however, that people are afraid to die for sake of loosing their R's-I've NEVER seen that happen.

The community on the server is great, it is consistently jammed packed. Alot of mature players are on it, and it has ALOT of regulars. The idiot 11 year old "dude" is just ignored.....

AMAZINGLY unlike most pubs, there is no mad rush at the start for the marines to all try to grab the com chair.......everyone tends to hit com, see who is the best and hop in.....when a new game starts, I hit tab I see "Hmm, heimdal and k r o n i k are both on marines, no need for me to go com"-everyone else does the same. The result is that the marine com is usually someone who knows what they are doing, and not some clueless noob.

Marines dont whine and moan for heavy weapons, grenade launchers, hmg's and HA arent give out like candy.......they are used wisley.

On the aliens side they actually WORK TOGETHER!!

Some skulks usually rush the marine spawn, BUT the vast majority know better. They know it is wiser to follow a gorge around, feed him their r's and gaurd him as he builds.

The community on Voogru's server is fantastic, the balance is fantastic, the server is fantastic-I no longer play on any other server, and when it is full, I dont play NS-after playing there no other server can possibly compare.

Dont just take what you read on this forum to get your opinion of voogru's server, as they are anecdotal stories passed from people who never played on it, to others who never played on it. Come try the server for yourself and see what it is about.

MINOR EDIT: If you have played there, and wish to talk about your experience, please post the name you played there under. I play there more then I proboably should, so I know all the regulars heh, I'd like to know who is talking <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->.

I've played there a few times, I found the nightvision kinda fun, then I moved back to my regular server.

Note: This topic is being watched by moderators, of which some already believe that Voogru discussions should be locked by default because they usually end up as flamewars.

All I can say is that I've only lost 1 game as a marine commander while playing on voogru's server. The game balance isn't too out of whack, in my opinion, by the medpack in an armory trick (yes, it does save a few rps for medpacks, but how much does that honestly impact my game?). On the other hand, the alien communal resource trick holds great potential for some early on flexibility as aliens(the one time I did lose on voogru's was because a bunch of smart aliens pooled together their resources and rushed for the second hive immediately), although I won't comment as to how fair these changes really make the game seem, only that I had a fun time as commander with these new challenges and gimmicks.

JUST trying to set the record straight....if I didnt believe strongly in it, I wouldnt write a thousand word post about it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->.

People seem to constantly trash the server as being some horrible house of sin and debochery, which just isnt true heh-I want to set the record straight.

The more I play there the more I come to appreciate the modifications. However I do not really think NVG is all that useful. The No Scores Mod and the Khaara Resource Mod are extremely cool. The Marine Health/Ammo Tower is okay but doesnt seem to affect the game as much as its detractors say.

One of those moderators is me. Although I believe no good will come of this thread, I will give you a chance to prove me wrong. Stay objective, keep an open mind, and be fair, as well as kind. The minute I see a flame on this thread, I will nuke it to far worse places than off-topic.

Like I said earlier I can see it took a lot of work to code these additions.

I just wished they kept them in the idea of NS.

Those players who are good, dont need to flaunt their score, other players acknowledge them if they work well with others.

The modifications in voogrus are excellent, and should possibly be implemented into the mod itself. I really like the ability to give resourses to other players or store them in the hive. It increases alien teamwork tenfold, especially at the beginning of the game, when the gorges are just starting off.

The med-dispensing armouries really dont change the balance of the game, since they give out health so slowly, and are stationary. What they do do is save the captain a huge amout of time and frustration since he doesnt have to answer as many health requests. He can still give health to the marines that are farther afield, but the constant requests for health at the spawn are gone.

The nightvision is kind of pointless, and i dont know if anyone uses it anyway. I dont really think it should be implemented. its not woth the effort. The other two modifictions are excellent without breaking the balance, and should be implemented into the next incarnation of NS.

What's interesting is that if the aliens are some what organized, then in the beginning of the game the first thing the aliens do is transfer their r's to the gorges, then proceed to rush the marines.

If it wasn't for the fact that the server is typically filled with regulars, I doubt that the aliens would be effectively using this ability.

I've noticed 3 things occur when the aliens transfer their r's to the gorge and proceed to build a 2nd hive immediately when the game starts.
    First, resouces are dangerously low.
2nd, there's very little r's to build OCs and DCs.
3rd, the aliens are spread out dangerously thin while trying to provide defense for both the original hive and the hive that's being built. (this is on a server that almost always have 22 people playing)

As much as an advantage the r's sharing provides, there are some serious weaknesses that the marines can exploit to win the game.

Except for the innovation called the Phase Gate. This means that the commander no longer needs to pay attention to locations covered by phase gates really. All he has to do is assign one or two people to cover all the areas, and they can take care of it themselves. All he has to do is let the team know if anything is going wrong back there. After defending against a skulk or two, the defenders can phase back, heal up, and continue defending.

This leaves the commander free to just concentrate on the advancing marines, instead of working on both offense and defense.

A small thing, but still a valid thing IMHO.

Lastly, don't call it an NS server, because it isn't NS.

I played there once before i think because i saw laser sights and thought my game was going screwy. Another time i read the connect message and ............well didnt connect. I just dont wnt to play there because these changes sound like they have such a drastic effect on strategy. I just know if i started playing there i would end up screwing myself over once i went to a pub, or played a Clan match or something (if i ever joined a clan).

I play on lots of server - unfortunately I don't often get on Voogru's because it's always full. If it gave me a better ping I would probably wait for a free slot
The mods are interesting, I think they add depth to the games strategy and teamplay without actually taking anything away. Voogru's server is NS, in the same way that OP4 is Half-Life. I have only just set a script to make the nessessary bind required for using the resource sharing/nvg effectively but I hve enjoyed the few games I've played there. Voogru has been successful in creating a distinctive, memorable and fun server that has a strong sense of community and teamwork. I congratulate him but I would advise anyone that doesn't like the idea to stay well away and leave the player space open for me <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Once you go Voogru you'll never go back. Honestly, I have played elsewhere and have yet to find servers with competent commanders or players for that matter. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Voogru's additions to NS encourage teamplay. Not to mention lower each round time atleast by half. Only thing I see wrong with this server is the slots, GIVE ME MORE!!

Just my $.02, I may be wrong

I don't understand why people say "that's not NS". Who decides what is NS and what isn't NS?

Voogru's server is always full. He has coded checks to check for people removing animations (skulk biting and marine muzzle flash) which make is easier to kill. Admins are on and promote fair play and keep abuses down. I played a lot of other servers before Voogru's and now his is the only one I play on. Plain and simple.

Too many new people come to Voogru's server that play 5 minutes, offer no constructive criticism and leave. I think if the doubters play with an open mind they may accept the server and not blow it off as "not being NS".
  • J3UJ3U Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8497Members
ok first off I heard all the fuss here about this server, and decided to check it out. before I even got to play enough to see just how much the res sharing and healing armories affect the game, I found a far bigger problem. when I played as marine I got no sound coming from my gun, which totally confused me and made it a lot harder for me to figure out what I was doing. on the alien side I started biting as a skulk, and it sounded like parasite, which was strange but not dissorienting enough to stop me from enjoying a nice marine snack. but once the 2nd hive got up and I was able to fade, I switch to my acid rocket, and it started making the skulk's bite sound, and no acid shot out. I was quickly destroyed. obviously the scripts they added screwed some other stuff up, cause I haven't had this problem on any other server. and to top that I found this quote from kInG kAhUnA on the voogru forum

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->As long as I'm paying for this server, I'm giving myself welders, and flares; and armor or gunz if I have to. And when we have a commander that doesn't know what he/she is doing, if you find yourself on my team; plz don't complain about it.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

of course you're not complaining, you can give yourself whatever weapons and armor you want apparently. if that's not cheating I don't know what is. enabling cheats on a single player game that you pay for is fine, have fun. but when 20 or more other people are playing with/against you, I honestly don't see how they could put up with it. obviously they do, but I wouldn't. I really just don't understand it.

The number one reason I will not play on Voogru is the resource sharing.

It is possible to get hive 2 up in less then 5 minutes, and if you had... say, 10 players on your team, then that means you get two fades up far before the marines even have enough resources to work on upgrades.

And don't say his changes balance jack. Nothing you listed could balance the game, aside from maybe unbalance via the resource sharing, and that means the ONLY reason voogru has %50-%50 stats is because of the even makeup of the skill of the teams. Tell me: Is healing at an armory going to win you the game?

EDIT: And King Kahuna: I payed for half-life, therefore I should be allowed to cheat on any server I choose, shouldn't I?

somebody told me that in-game. I forget the name of the server and I'm too lazy to check, but it's only been the ones that share res and have healing armories. You have to quit to fix the problem of attacks having the wrong effect. They are cosmetic, and only you can see them. For example, I've had my knife firing bullets before, that I could see, and my LMG fired shotgun rounds at the firing rate of a LMG, but no one else could see, and it wasn't actually firing them.

As for no sound, drop your gun and pick it back up to get the firing sounds to return.

I havent played on the server but the changes sound fun and all. But personaly i wouldnt reconoment it for clanners to play there oftern. Why? because if you play on there as ur regulair server say 10 hours a week ur get too used to the changed settings and and when it comes to a clan match ur end up being too reliant on the settings made on that server to become a effective member of the clan. <- keeping it short

Actually GWB's servers and voogru's have been my primaries. I rarely play on voogru anymore though since it's packed all the time now.

I love both...voogru's got his loaded up with addons, alters the game a lot, can make it or break it depending on what kind of game you're looking for. GWB's has the laser sight mod. Frankly though, while I really enjoy both of the servers, I only play on either one of the GWB's or on voogru. I think a good mix of non-modded servers would cure players ailing from mod overdose <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

it was fun for a while, but a mod'd mod...gets kinda old.

I think if the doubters play with an open mind they may accept the server and not blow it off as "not being NS".<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Unfortunately this is not always the case. Some people who post here do abuse privleges by altering the game in the middle of action, such as giving weapons out.

And your "who decides what NS is?" is easily answered. The people who made it decide. Not anyone else. At best you can only have an opinion of what it is, but how it supposed to be is not something you can decide.

Natural selection has been modified by code. Even "simple" changed like Night vision goggles unbalance the balancing created by the makers of the game. It's not much good being a skulk with marines that can see you. Besides unless your gamma is all messed up most areas are visible and those that aren't can be easily lit up with you flashlight.

Health was already balanced without it being given out at armories. That is what the commander is for. Marines can get health anywhere in a level. Excluding regeneration aliens have to run way back to a hive or somewhere else severly slowing their progress.

If you plan on playing a fun game of NS I highly suggest you don't play on voogru modified servers.

All said is my personal opinion.
