I have the chance to pick up a machine fairly cheaply (~£100) from a friend based on a Phenom 8750 Triple core @ 2.39 GHz per core, 4Gb RAM, and an ATI 4800 series card - has anyone got an equivalent system to give me an idea of possible frame rates please ?
Hi Phoe! Nice find for 100 pounds! You might struggle a little with the first gen Phenom at the moment. But in the long term, a 4800 (Assuming it's a 70/90?) is going to play NS2 just fine. I wouldn't be able to guesstimate numbers... Too many variables! Map, resolution, server tick, position in map, players on screen, where you are looking, windowed/not windowed...
It's from an old friend of mine - it was his main system, but he's moved over to a laptop for convenience... i'm on a 3.4ghz P4 at the moment, so pretty much anything would be an improvement (not sure whether my ATI 4670 might be faster than something like a 4830, he isn't sure what card's in it)
I'm running NS2 on a Phenom 9950BE with a HD4870/1Gb and 4 Gb RAM. For me FPS is sufficient (around 30-40 most of the time, may drop to 20 when massive action occurs). Im running NS2 on 1920x1080 with details set to high and shadows/bloom on. I think you should get the system and upgrade to Phenom II for around 100€ if the mainboard is capable of handling it. A 4870 is 50€ on ebay currently. So if you invest another 100-130P you should have a decent system for ns2.

Hmm i try that command, it seems its not working are you sure its r_shadows?
Thanks for the replies - i'll see if it's still available - the processor speed sounds 2x-3x faster than what i'm currently using, and for that price i'd probably be daft to pass it by :-}
