To all the active server admins out there like ana. chicago servers and the european servers, can we please play a map other than freaking summit? The same map over and over is getting a bit boring. Mainly speaking of ana.'s servers. You have 3 servers that play summit... Really?

There is no option for this. Think the only way is for an admin to be present and restart the server with a new map.

    Two reasons really

    1) There is no way to change maps without restarting the server

    2) Summit is really the only playable map at the moment. Tram is the only other completed, official map, but it has huge performance and graphical errors for some players.

it would be nice if someone released a dev-textured map simply for the purposes of giving people something to play. If I wasn't knee-deep in my own map, this would be a good pursuit

    And Rockdown?

Rockdown plays decently enough. Would be nice to alternate between Summit and Rockdown to mix it up. Not sure if the GmOvrmind admin tool is able to automatically switch maps after x amount of time playing one of the maps.

Rockdown isn't an official map, and is nowhere near the size of "normal" NS2 maps, so I didn't mention it. Rockdown is indeed playable though. But again, there is no way to switch maps on the fly. Only the server owner can do that manually with a restart.

Well then it would seem that there is still an opportunity for someone to make a dev-textured map to alleviate the public demand, and also potentially to refine the map for the future. A good idea for all mappers out there.

I agree, it gets very old that's why I have stopped playing at the moment.

However unfortunately it's because other maps are not finished/optimized yet, such as ns_tram you get like half the FPS you do on summit.

Just let tram run on a 5vs5 server. The performance loss will be not that huge and beside the performance.... it is a beautiful map and it would be a nice alternative to all the empty summit servers out there.

Since summit is out I played tram only one time on a 7vs7 server .. and that amount of players is just to high.

Nope, the problem is, the map is the biggest one, the ns community loved ns1 and the maps and gameplay.
NS2 maps are mostly smaller, also the teamsize is smaller mostly.
But summit change it big, its a very nice big map, people like that.
I do but not often, there other maps with players, but yeah since summit was released, its #1 ^^
In my mind, the other maps feels like combat from ns1 if you compare the size of the maps .

I'd like to see other starting positions, similar to how NS1 had. In NS1, the alien team started in 3 random positions, while the marines always started in the same place.

NS2 could be slightly different. The aliens could still start in 3 places, and the marines would always start in the "opposite" map position. (This would have to be defined in the map).

This would considerably mix up the gameplay while not having to change maps.

Personally I think Triad/Triad22 is well on its way to being beta ready. The developers should give assistance to [=Alex=] like they did for psykoman.

There's no auto-downloading mechanism in place is what I think is the major issue concerning the map-monotony. UWE could distribute maps with NS2 by default, but I'd reckon they reserve that option for maps with truly excellent production-values (and summit managed to reach that bar).

How are any maps going to improve if they are never paid. We are kind of doing the mappers a dis-service by always playing summit...

I think the random spawning will be great, however, the maps are extremely small to support a feature such as this. The random hive drops in NS1 worked due to the shear size of the maps. If the alien hive dropped in heli or surface access on summit, it can almost promise a marine win with a marine rush/egg camp.

I have not tried triad22 and I am excited to try it out on the fr server tonight. I have played tram and thought it was accepted in terms of fps. I am just getting insanely sick of summit, I would rather help the mapping community build a better map rotation than play the same map, over and over...

Thats a clear reminder that we need more contribution from the community from both sides of the map development scene. It also wouldnt hurt if UW release a great map that properly runs their hand build game lol.

It makes me,wonder, what maps to the DEVs test their code on? Summit? Hmmm

It isn't just performance. Tram is also flat-out broken. It crashes clients when they join, or gives them unplayable graphical glitches. Doesn't matter how many players there are, tram is a no-go.

Rockdown isn't played anymore because it's crazy unbalanced in the alien's favor.

At this point, without proper map cycling, MOTDs, map downloading, or other things, custom maps are a really hard sell.

Thus, we all keep playing summit. And we are all tired of it, just like you. But it's the only game in town.

No, it's not. Autodownloading never was in NS2, it would be a whole new feature, not a fix.

On Topic: Maybe you forgot that summit already was played before it was officially included in NS2. If there is a good community map out there, some servers need to start running it and if people see it is played, they'll try to join, then get the "file not found". Then they'll come to the forum and beg for help with their "error" and people who know have to tell a million times how manually downloading and installing maps work :P. Was the same with ns2_summit_b1.
