Any chance it will be released this year?

When they had the two for one offer around Christmas i thought it might be fair to expect a late summer or winter release this year but to be honest i really don't know now so im curious what the forums thinks, it seems like they do make good progress but what is a realistic prediction based on what we know, is it this year, early next year or late next year?

I think by Christmas this game will be ready to be honest.

Well i originally thought they would have a Halloween release this year for v1.0 but now the odds of that happening are becoming slim, so i'd make a estimate of probably mid next year. However depending on how successful Max's new binding layer is it still may be possible for a Halloween release this year, but if it doesn't bring as much success as hoped for then i'd probably expect mid next year for v1.0. Keep in mind this game's expectation in its first release is to have 32 player games, run considerably smoothly on the original system requirements originally posted on their website, and I would assume it would be feature complete, including exosuits, jetoacks, and Onos.

We are making every effort to have the game done this year. We have hired and are still hiring more programming help, and that should speed up development considerably. Trust me, we are as anxious to get this game done as you all are.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the hire of the new programmers and hope this will greatly speed things along. Is the money used to pay for them being borrowed? Last summer it seemed UWE was in poor financial shape and had to rush to beta to get more cash flow, so I'm a little surprised they appear to suddenly have money for new hires. In any case, I wish UWE the best, and hope NS2 is very successful.

1-3 years would be my reasonable guess.

My totally uninformed guess would be a targeted November release (just in time for the holidays) that gets delayed till Jan/Feb because last minute code gremlins break a vital component of the gameplay.

if it's not released this halloween then i say wait till next to release it. even if it's fully completed by february of next year just keep it in a beta stage until halloween.

    I wouldn't be <i>completely </i>opposed to this

It's coming along nicely, progress from the first patch is significant, obviously there's a lot left to do but there's a lot of year left to do it in. I'd expect it to be done or nearly done by christmas.

Also christmas or in time for christmas is a good time to release games, people buy stuff more around then so it makes sense as a date.

    I believe that.

But to be honest, in my Opinion it is better to release the Game "when its done".
Releasing a half finished Game just to match the release Date or get some Cash always backfires.
(good example for this: Gothic 3 ... which was a glitch fest)
So, if you release the Game in the middle of next Year or even later would be okay too.

But, a Release in this Year would be awesome!

Charlie spent quite a bit of his MBA lecture talking about how setting strict deadlines makes work go faster.

If they say 'yeah it'll be done next year' then it will take until next year.

If they say 'it needs to be done this year' it quite probbaly will be done this year, and even if it isn't, it will be much closer to finished than it would otherwise.

I would think it would be. Things seem quite far along and new people have been hired.

If I remember correctly the original official release displayed on the site, was October 2009 which followed the beginning of info updates to registered mail accounts the previous year. My earliest being a September 2008 email that was a reminder the game was still in development with videos of the first ingame footage.

After Duke Nukem Forever (supposedly out this summer lol) this is probably the 2nd longest game in development that ive had an interest in.

I'm not so certain it'll be as long as some people think but it won't be quick either.

From what I can tell the major thing holding back the current release is performance, as soon as that's sorted
out the beta will actually feel allot more like a product. Then it's a matter of adding the rest of the games mechanics
and all the art assets that it sounds (and looks) like they already have completed.

My guess is gonna be either later this year or early next year.

I'm inclined to think finance will force them to release it sooner rather than later. My bet is this year still.

    That's a very unspecific guess.

    Yes, what Cory said.

Somehow, we have not experienced the mythical man month. Every time we've had a new programmer help us, they've gotten up to speed very quickly. I'm not sure why this is, but it is definitely the case.

We will not be rushing v1.0 or releasing it before it's done (unlike with our earlier releases that we wanted to get feedback on earlier, and also were having financial concerns), and we're ramping up now to get everything in and polished up this year.

Maybe all of your programmers are amazingly good and can write intelligent code which is easy to explain to other people.

I guess the team is small enough that there's no administrative(is that even a word) overhead yet?

Good stuff, thanks for the positive response, i wasn't sure what to expect with a thread like this but had been wondering about it for a while now and oddly hadn't seen any posts about it.

I'd actually suspect its because they are writing it mostly in lua to be easily accessible and understandable for modders.

Also, the truly difficult task (the engine C++ code) is being handled mostly by one person (e.g. Max) AFAIK.

Let's count how many potential patches there can be if UWE continues a 2/month patch release schedule.

    ~13 Patches til October 31st

    ~17 Patches til Jan 1st 2012

Considering the amount of progress from Alpha through 20ish patches (b149-b171) over 8 months, draw your own conclusions.

Let's just say I'm not holding my breath, but it's not absolute impossible; just damn improbable.
