Oh one feature request for the mini map! :)
When I press M, can you have a blip appear on the map where I am? I always shake my mouse (to move my character) when the mini map is first opened to find myself on the map.
What is important when you quickly peek on the minimap?
You want to see:
Alignment, type of class (as Marines[Jetpack, Heavy or regular(should probably be marked by weapon)], or as Alien[Gorge, Skulk, Fade, Lerk or Onos]) or Structure.
Don't fall into the trap where you think, "Oh, everything is green on my side and red on their side, should be NP then..".
Easy to differentiate does not equal aesthetically nice! That's why a big company like Blizzard decided to make icons of the same talent build of various colors. It doesn't necessarily look nice, but it PLAYS nice in the long run.
The only one can easily remedy from these icons is; "OH! Something other than green is is my base!" Honestly, make a compromise. Greenish = good! Redish = bad! But make it so, that people that actually wanna invest some time into this game can see something a bit more relevant deeper than that.

I don't really agree with the tone of your argument but I kind of agree with the sentiment. It's not that I dislike the selected icons aesthetically, but I'm not sure how functional they will be "at a glance" during gameplay. I don't think the shapes and colors are distinct enough to quickly differentiate between them.

Good choice, it definitely stayed the grittiest and followed the footsteps of the ns1 map iconography the most. Congrats to the other entries as well, now you have a near complete icon set for folks to use should they wish to mod their game. Everyone wins here.

I'm kinda having diffculty reading any of the icons submitted.
They're all really small and most of them are the same shape, kinda hard to tell what they are without putting my head 2 inches from the monitor and staring at them.
Also most of them are based on the top down view of various buildings, which is fine for the commander. But as an infantryman for example, an IP doesn't look just like a circle, it looks like an oval with three big lights above it.
I think you need the icons to be much bigger, or you need to go with something abstract and easy to differentiate.

It's much higher -- and thus things are much smaller -- on laptops. (usually 95-117 ppi) It looks fine on a regular desktop display ppi. (usually 86-96 ppi)
I don't wholly disagree, but none of the minimap sets are perfect. Once we start using them regularly (in-game) we'll start seeing which individual icons are easily discernible and which are not. They can be modified in the future.

Think the monitor is about 20 inches and running at 1680x1050.
It's not the size, it's the number of pixels, they are not very clear with that few pixels, even if I make the image bigger they're still unclear until I think about them.
Congrats supernorn. Good stuff. Please don't stop working on yours xvision though. I prefer them myself and will probably use them when modability is working.

A blip that highlights where I am would ROCK.

i liked the orange ones alot, they looked very good to me.

I definitely prefer Runteh's, and xVisions' second.
Colour from Hud and Icons should change when u're >25% health!
