Bug priority

I've been enjoying everything I've read about NS2 so far but unfortunately, that's all I've been able to do. I'm suffering from a bug that has been posted on getsatisfaction.com but there's been no progress or updates on it yet. When I try to play NS2, the game window opens, I see a picture of a marine on the right, hear the background music and then everything happens at about 3 seconds per frame. The marine's face and weapons are distorted polygons, the text is corrupted and movement is jerky for all the animations.

This has been the only result I've been able to get from trying to run the game on two different gaming rigs, both completely capable of handling a number of FPS games. What's really got me confused is the fact that there's no way I can submit screen shots, directx diagnostics or any kind of video. I'm experiencing a bug that is completely preventing me from running the software and I cant tell if anything is being done to correct it. There are tons of interesting new features going into the game but I hear so little about the advancement of clearing out the bug list. Shouldn't developers try to fix bugs before dumping a ton of new code into a system and make it that much more complex?

Anyway, reading about the updates and hearing the comments of the game play are interesting. I just hope someone gets around to fixing this problem soon.

Might help if you posted the comp specs for the forum users too.

You could run the dxdiag D7-9 tests, otherwise I think it just might be your graphic card not optimized.
  • ArcadianArcadian Join Date: 2008-11-30 Member: 65617Members
That sounds like a graphics card issue. NS2 Alpha is pretty demanding at the moment, but this is the first error I've read of like this. Am I right in interpreting what you wrote that you have two gaming computers and you get the same issue on both? What are the specifications of the second?
  • CrispixCrispix Join Date: 2007-01-10 Member: 59543Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Supporter, Reinforced - Silver, Reinforced - Gold, Reinforced - Diamond, Reinforced - Shadow
Seems like you're using an outdated 7800 GS AGPx8 gpu. It's actually a really good graphics card for agp slot type but for running NS2, I don't think it has the power. The devs are still optimizing as we speak, so best thing to do is wait for the next build which should be soon. Whats the specs on your other machine.

Oh and Pentium 4 = OLD.

You might as well upgrade that machine.

Just a note, while you're hearing about all the features they're adding, it is AFAIK, only one or two programmers (Charlie and their recent hiring probably... sorry I forget your name again!). I think Max is probably working overtime on getting most of the big bugs fixed (the major one right now being lag).

not only probably, but that is the way it works.

Charlie (no offense), probably has not the knowledge needed to make a 3d game engine, so he is doing the lua scripting for the game work. No time is lost on bugfixing because of new features. If anything, time is gained because new features in the lua code can expose some bugs in the engine.

I'd say it's your old PC. P4 is an old single core (albeit with Hyper-Threading) and u have an AGP card, which has poor bandwidth and is pretty old itself. Your whole PC architecture is about 5 or 6 years old.

Time for a new PC. With Windows 7. Yo.

PS: Try updating all your chipset and GFX drivers to the newest you can (latest BETA Nvidia ones), latest Mobo BIOS, make sure your AGP settings are set to 8x and Fast-Writes enabled, and you have an AGP aperture of at least 256MB. If you have no luck after that, upgrade time.

I assume hyper-threading is enabled (but not necessary), but if i'm right he has two cpu's so it should work.
You have one cpu or two cpu's? or just one in hyper-thread mode? 2x 3.0ghz sounds ok to me.

I had the same 7800GS (512mb) card in my previous pc and it should be supported, I never had problems.

If it happens on two computers then I guess something is wrong in his bios or outdated drivers.

Anyway, tomorrow i'm visiting a friend, he has the same vga card on a single 1.8ghz AMD cpu and I will
    test NS2 for you.

    Have you installed these:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\redist\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\redist\PhysX\PhysX_9.09.0814_SystemSoftware.exe

You can build a decent DX11 gaming rig for lss than £500, dont feel the need to spent over £180 on graphics, A GTX465 is more than suficient I have one and it runs BFBC2 with 32xAA no problem. Always buy a GTX not a GT or GTS.
I dont know what an ATi equiv is but under £180 > £100 should be your price bracket for a GPU

    7800 GS?

    There's your problem.
  • AvalonAvalon Join Date: 2007-03-04 Member: 60224Members
Kind of hard to wade through that, but first I'd mark what driver set you're using.

Then, try the latest drivers. If you're still having the issue, try an older driver than your original driver.

Sometimes newer drives introduce problems on older cards.

I'm glad to see that the NS2 forums are nothing like the way the NS1 forums were in their heyday. I was worried that this would turn into a bar-be-que but the responses from folks has been rather promising.

To address the most common issue, yes, my computer is a little on the dated side but I assure you it still has some life left in it. Am I going to be playing Crysis 2 at maximum settings? No chance in hell. Am I going to be able to play most of the games that are on the market today? Yes.

Now, taking that and moving forward, I do want to point out a couple of things:

1.2 GHz Processor - Yep, got that in the bag.
256MB RAM - Got it with room to spare. I even have another 2GB of RAM that I'm gonna install when I get some free time
a DirectX 9 level graphics card - Yes, most assuredly. While my 7800 GS wont win any speed races, it most certainly is 9.0c compliant
    Windows Vista/2000/XP - running XP SP3
Steam - Had to have it to download
Mouse - Yep, a cheap ass Dell one
Keyboard - Yep, a note quite so cheap ass Dell one
Internet connection - Couldnt be posting here without it

So, the point of that is that my system does meet the minimum specs for NS2. Given that there are a number of other people having similar problems makes me believe that the issue isn't so much with my computer but possibly with the code. This segways into the heart of my topic of bug priority. I know that the frame rate issue is one of the highest listed for bugs on getsatisfaction.com but there seems to be little progress towards resolving this issue. Are we going to continue seeing more and more content going into the game without properly fixing known bug issues first? That's not the best way to advance forward in a coding environment and will lead to a lot more troubles in the long run.

Even while there are still major bug fixes to go, certain video problems may not be fixed until nearing release - and some may not even get priority until then. There are a lot of corner cases, considering the vast amount of cards out there that all have funny little things to them. It may be worth setting your sights on an upgrade in the near future anyways, regardless of what the minimum specs say. While I don't think you should have to run out and buy a whole new setup just for this game, you would probably benefit from doing so with every other game you own and will own in the coming years.

I'm afraid to say that the issue is without a doubt your pocket- I mean computer. At the moment I've seen Natural Selection 2 push 1.6 GIG of RAM, that's 7 times more than you currently have!

I understand money is probably an issue for you hence why you're running on a machine that would look outdated 5 years ago, but you will absolutely have to get a new computer to play Natural Selection 2.

Lastly, will you be playing Crysis 2 AT ALL? Hell no.

The problems your having most likely won't be resolved until late Beta. There are a lot of bugs in the current engine, and it's probably isn't just 1 or 2 of them that are causing your system to perform the way it does. They will be prioritizing the bugs that affect the most systems first, and most of those will be contributing factors to your problems as well. When they get into beta, the game should be running decent on most systems and at that point they can look into fine tuning for lower end systems as well as quirks with different video cards.

Today I visited my buddy, his videocard is a MSI 7600GS (512mb)
I have the same videocard but can't test it cuz I trashed my previous pc.

I copyed my NS2 directory into his steam, launched my account, a small update started and
after startup we have big white-black pixels and then the game crashes.

There was no time for a fresh install, his internet is only 300kb/s, I had the
same ISP once but I helped that modem out of it's miserable life.

    I apologise, can't help you.

Frankly I don't care for much of whst the OP has to say. Why? Because it's basically a bug report that hasn't been fixed yet. Big freaking deal. There's no real reason for a separate report outside GetSatisfaction (horrrible bug reporting and DB btw).

The bug has been reported, just because the devs haven't fixed it yet, doesn't mean they are not aware of it.

You see there are various priorities that go into making a game, let me summarise:

    <b>Alpha</b>
    - Fix the issues stopping you from hitting your publisher/investor-agreed milestones

    <b>Beta</b>
    - UWE isn't even here yet, but basically all the core mechanics of the game need to be working on the majority system (whichever ; bugs withstanding). Still, UWE is quite close to this.
    - Compatibility bugs come low down the list. Yes, they are important, but no they aren't stopping the game working for the majority of users, therefore a fix receives a lower priority, albeit with a high severity.

If you have a gripe, best to report it where the devs focus on looking for issues, not in its own thread.

Don't forget people - vid card RAM is completly different from system RAM. His PC has 2gb of system ram, his vid card has 256mb of ram.

I'm going to guess that's the problem. The ram on the video card is there mainly for textures since those take up the majority of space. Once your vidcard's ram has been exhausted, it'll try to load those textures into the main system RAM - of which you have 2GB - which it can do, but is a whole lot slower.

Once your main system RAM is filled, it'll use the Page file to make up for it. A page file is a portion of your hard disk used as RAM. However, since your HDD is considerably slower then any type of RAM - everything runs at a snails pace.

So i think that's whats happening. 256MB isn't alot these days for vidcards to have. Even the low end cards in laptops have turbo boost which allow them to share the system ram with the vid card ram, boosting most to at the very least 512mb. If you upgrade your system ram with another 2GB of memory you should see a small improvement in performance, but it's not going to do much. Remember, you have a pentium 4 which still works via the FSB - Front Side Bus - which is the connection between CPU and RAM. It is notoriously slow, and even intel doesn't use that tech anymore from the core i7's onward (AMD switched off it a long long time ago).

So i'm afraid you're looking at an upgrade. Not just you're vid card, but your CPU as well. Ghz doesn't say everything, and that 3 Ghz on a pentium 4 (assuming a northwood core) is about as fast as a 1 Ghz core i7. Simply because the latter is based on performance-per-watt while the P4's where cracking out as much Ghzs as possible.

Just for anyone reading this thread wondering how different video cards perform in Alpha, and for OP's interest, I'll post my results with 4 different set ups. This is the 'gut feeling' I get from watching the FRAPS counters during combat on the various comps used for NS2HD.

    5870 and 1090T: 27-33fps (1920x1080 High)
    GTX260 and E8400: 23-27fps (1920x1080 High)
GTX260 SLI and E8400: 26-32fps (1920x1080 High) - Interesting that SLI has an effect.
    9300m and P9600: 8-10fps unplayable (1280x720 Low)

Yeah, unfortunately reb00t, I have an AMD 2.6 Ghz Dual-Core running a 9800 GT 1 GB vid card on PCI Express and I can't even run the game smoothly in all scenarios. If I play online I have to play with the graphics turned all the way down. Strangely, I can walk around the maps just fine with high res graphics when I create my own game in NS2.

If my system is struggling, than your's must be dying.

The devs are working on making the game more playable for everyone. I'm sure that people like you and I with somewhat older PCs won't have to miss out on NS2.

    Cheers,
    Cody
