I am reaaally not sure if 3rd person view would be a good idea on a first person shooter game. You simply can't compare it to football or racing. Rather compare it to CS shoutcasts, there is actually an overview, but you wouldn't use it. People generally (at least I think so) want to see the skill in high-skilled games. And that's aim/fading/lerking/etc from first person. I loved (and still do) spectating really good players from first person view myself, too. Unless like 100 people tell me otherwise I think I'll stick to it :)

And sorry, there is no way in old NS to put the minimap in somewhat corner. It's already a fix to have a transparent minimap, usually it would be as disturbing as in my casts on ns_orbital. You can select a mixed view though, with minimap half side screen and the player view like 1/4 sized, but it's horrible to watch in my opinion.

For target audience matters, I think I stay with the experienced role. Explaining the game in every shoutcast would be just boring. I still explain very important basics for almost every game (ambushing, positioning, upgrade paths, ...) but don't want to get to a completely newb fashion. I still hold to my two idols, Husky and HD, and they do it same way. Except for some special tutorial videos of course.

For "knowing the maps", I agree, a better map coverage can help, and I tried so with my last cast. I will proceed giving basic map infos and try to improve that part.

And last, thanks for your feedback!!

I'm glad you mentioned Husky and HD, i can easily relate to that since i play sc2 (diamond league). We can't really compare NS to CS, they're very different. NS has a heavy RTS element and so it is impossible for one single player to determine the outcome of a match by having "leet skills" whereas in CS, one really good player can easily determine the outcome of the match. That's where i was trying to get at, NS has a lot more strategy in it and that's why i feel that 3rd person and free view would work. Furthermore, CS has headshots where you would kill a person with a single bullet, NS you'd have to spray quite a bit to kill anything.

If you havent seen any of Tasteless Plot commentaries, i suggest you watch some, you'll see what i mean. imo he's better than any other commentator I've seen so far.

The one scenario that keeps popping in my head from your casts is a fight involving 4+ players, the battle starts, we can tell what the person we are spectating is doing and how he's aiming and stuff (camera moves so fast most of the time that it becomes jerky... not so good for spectating) but we can't clearly tell what happened to his allies nor what the other aliens did untill after he dies and we switch view, by that time the battle may well be over. However, if we were spectating in 3rd person or free view, then we would get a shot at the whole battle. You'll see where the lerk is shooting from, how the skulks are bouncing and maneuvering, etc.

Well for NS2 (cause NS wont be going any further) if you want to broaden your audience and reach the level of views that Husky and HD have, i feel that you'd have to change your targeted audience.
Starcraft is a well known and established game by now, it's over 12 years old, and still "heavily" played today (it's also a national sport in Korea). The same unfortunately cannot be said about NS. That's why Husky and HD can skip over some stuff that pretty much everyone knows (zergling speed, burrow, terran scan, etc.).
You don't have to explain everything every time, just briefly mention what the things that do take place. Like if com upgrades motion tracking it would take 3 seconds to say " motion tracking displays a circle around alien units tracking their movements, similar to parasite for aliens".

For NS i guess it's fine the way you're commentating now and hopefully w'll have some help in terms of spectating for NS2, maybe something ala SC2. Or maybe people can mod these things in :)

I see the problem when there is an important ambush and the man I spectate that moment is a) somewhere completely else b) bad positioned so that you can't get a grasp of the action or c) first to die which leaves you with the death cam. Still, in that case, I might rewind and/or show it even in slow-motion. I need to play a bit with that to get a better feeling. But I want you guys see the important seconds of the matchups of course.

And yea, I could say there's a circle on your HUD for mt. I think I already mentioned sometimes the yellow dots on your minimap. Maybe I should explain a little bit more. Just enough so it won't disturb experienced NS players or make it look like a tutorial.

btw I just bought SE...you surely want me have to try NS2 alpha casts, don't you? :P

I know the general audience is the experienced player who already knows a lot about the game, the strategies and different moves, so you shouldn't need to explain the basics. But maybe you can make one shout cast for people who don't know the game yet, but are interested in it. Especially now that the NS2 release is getting closer. Record a video for all the newbies who would otherwise be totally lost and clueless about what's going on. To maybe get them interested and hooked up. With detailed explanations of the game, the teams, the map, the classes etc. Basically it wouldn't really be a shout cast but more like an introduction to the game, to which the cast battle is only the background. If for no other reason then only for a change of pace. Just an idea.

    Weeeh, back from inactivity.

This time just gathers since no new season. BUT there is a Night Cup incoming! Just watch the latest cast which I also used as an announcement video :)

Thanks, these videos are good for us newbies who just discovered this great looking game and are still deciding whether to get NS2 or not.

Always glad to help. But remember the videos (at least at the moment) show only NS1, so they can't help that much in your decision whether to buy NS2 or not ;)

Sooo, there is a good recent gather for you guys.

Sorry folks for the long break, but there was lots going on lately. NS2 alpha, SC2 release (oh my) and some private issues. But hey, I am back to casting! And about next week thursday I will finally get an upgrade of my internet connection from 1.5 Mbit to 32, so I don't have to wait days to upload videos anymore (you have no idea how that sucked).

Enough of that, here is the latest match, coming from the 17th NightCup in ENSL:

    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkZgOkCUSEs&feature=PlayList&p=0BC358E648DCDAA9&index=0&playnext=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkZgOkCUSEs...&playnext=1</a>

Ooook, so here is a really long match from the 17th ENSL NightCup. Took me damn long to upload since until 2 days ago I was trapped to 20kb/s upload rate. Now I (FINALLY) have a good connection and can pump out videos like 10 times faster - hooray

    Enough talk, here's the link

Yeah good job casting that marathon game. Even though TeamF wasn't top-notch and the other one was a rusty mix. Here's some feedback:

You focus too much on something. First you talk 2 minutes about the internet connection missing our starting strat, then 1 minute about lerk sporing storage and then 1 minute about not being able to see HP. We get the point. :P

I think it'd be a lot more interesting when you talk about something what's happening on the screen. A lot of the time someone frags someone but you talk completely about something else. It feels like the video is going its own path and you are going your own. If you watch Husky and HD, they usually always talk about the stuff they are watching. When someone is attacking and there's combat, they always talk about it, but when there's nothing interesting going on, they analyze the game and what's going upgradewise etc. Also they both talk faster so they can include a lot of analyze in the game like "protoss thermal lance is not ready and this colossus might go down!".

If a hive is dropped example, you might wanna spectate the gorge dropping for a while and then switch to a marine engaging a fade or whatever. I know reading minimap comes from a backbone for experience players but if you wanna attract wider audience make sure you show where the action is and talk about what you're seeing.

I know I said before you shouldn't be stating obvious but having watching HD and Husky I kind of understand that stating what happened on screen is important to keep a good flow. Like "blabla's lerk getting rolled by foobar's unparasited shotgun, bad scouting by other skulks and risky move by the lerk" instead of "wow lerk down" or "oh bad!". So I think you should always say what happened on the screen but add some bit of analyze there whenever you can.

I know experience players can tell when the game's over but you shouldn't just be moaning about it (like the players on the field :D) but talk about anything interesting you can find on minimap. Like what they could do to make a difference.

Also usually its much more pleasing watching the unit trying to kill rather than the unit that's trying to flee. Because when you watch the marine, you'll see both what the lerk trying to do and how is the marine shooting instead of just looking lerk's HP go down and hearing bullets. Also if you talk about whatever any lifeform or unit is doing, you can tell whether that is good or bad for the team. This should give you enough material to talk about.

But its very important you keep on talking. Sometimes you just talk something boring and watch someone get healed which is not really interesting. Actually the pace of talking really kind of gives pace of the game.. If you talk little and slow, it'll feel like the game is meaningless and slow but if you talk a lot it sounds like the game is exciting and a lot is going on. Move fast from one subject to antoher. Dont stick to old topic. Change to something that's interesting and talk about it.

Also sometimes it feels like you're not analyzing correctly. Like in ns_veil, me jumping wasn't the problem. The problem was me not audible scouting it in time and marines in west just being super slow to going back to base since you can afford to lose the commander for a while if you kill both their nodes but losing an early arms lab is not good. Of course since you haven't commanded that much, its not easy for you to tell.

I mean generally there's so much more to talk about. Like I saw some marine dying to a skuk that was in node, which is not easy to see but you can see that on minimap and that's exactly what you need to tell since not all spectators are experienced.

You talk a lot about tactics and lot of its is true but sometimes when you talk about something you miss something on screen. Like in veil Tane's fade skipped me in west and if he had gone for base and came back the same way, he could have died. Things like that, which you can see from the minimap. You talk a lot about macro but there's lots of depth in micro aswell. Multitasking is the word. ;)

And when the players write in the game anything like "WTF", "reg" or anything like that, its funny to comment on those.

Also you should install my/Fana's moviemaking <a href="http://www.ensl.org/files/articles/userconfig.cfg" target="_blank">userconfig</a> and edit it to your needs. If your computer can take it, install also <a href="http://www.madabouthats.org/projects/cgshader" target="_blank">pixel shaders</a>. Make NS look a lot better. There could be something in <a href="http://www.ninelegends.com/releases/ns-movie-edition/" target="_blank">NSMVE</a> you might wanna use. Especially the hotkeys for jumping in time are handy when you want to see something again what you missed. And you can add cool tracers.

Anyway good job, keep up the work. Next time harder faster stronger better!

I think b0t is some old and inactive Finnish player. Team Fantasy has a bunch players that occassionally appear from nowhere and play a couple of games and then disappear again.

ahh no the old school b0t is German.

I'm told that that b0t was some new guy to competitive. Avex certainly wouldn't play with some all Finnish clan. Plus no one's seen him for about 2 to 3 years.

Yeah thats not him them the comp euro NS scene was pretty dead by the end of 2004 so much so the end of the CB open cup was defaulted due to inactive teams the b0t I was asking about would of been around since 2003. he played for a german team and Team Germany and he was in BreakingPoint with me.

Avex did play in ENSL in several of clans. I'm also pretty sure he didn't think NS was dead in 2004. Hell, there were more clans in first ENSL season which started 2005 than in any clanbase tournament.

Even though the open cup was pretty terrabad. ENSL, I think, has been the best ns league thats ever been. Although, I guess we all view our favourite periods of ns through rose tinted glasses.

Weeeeh, lot feedback at once, jiriki.

I admit I don't talk that much about micro, but I always feel if I start talking about why marine X could go to Y to maybe trap lifeform Z, I miss lots of stuff in the same team. Don't really want to commit that hard on 1 marine (although I sometimes do it) while neglecting the rest of what's going on. It's generally hard to tell, since there's input of 12 players (Starcraft is only action by 2 players) to follow. But yeah, not trying to excuse, I'll just try my best.
Also agree on the "wow lifeform down" and "oh bad" comments, I need some better comments for that. I just hope my english magically improves while doing that so I can pump out some nicer comments :p

    Anyways, NC17 finals are uploaded
