All 14 of us never played before, and all 14 of us didnt read the guide/manual. Took us 1 min to figure out how to spawn as a marine, 5 min to figure the basics of the res system for aliens (build a res tower = more RPS for every alien), 15 minutes for the tech trees and turrets, and 2 hours until the aliens managed to kill the marines, after an awesome battle. :)
Heh. I had read everything I could get my hands on about the game before 1.0 came out. So when I jumped into my first game I mostly knew what to do, just not how to do it well. The first week was nuts, regardless. Tons of clueless server admins were just multiplying res rates, breaking the game.
I remember walking home the night the game was released. I was pretty excited.
I also remember getting my friends pumped for the game, only to have them get discouraged rather quickly. (often due to other players) I loved it too much, and it ended up being the only multiplayer game to this day that I played that much without my friends. I even consider it my favorite multiplayer game, being possible of some of the most amazing rounds. It's beautiful.
I wish I had a memory like some of you guys. I definitely don't even remember my first game. I played WAY too many games in my time with NS, it's all just jumbled. I do remember vividly having the lerks changed, the patch that changed the flight mechanic made me all kinds of angry. I used to love the old flight, hovering around a room of marines taking heads off with bites. Oh lerks, how I loved you.
I also remember people going gorge to save for hive because gorges got bigger amount of the res pool. And all the marine side glitches/funny relocs outside the map so that aliens cant get them.
ns_bast when there was that huge circular door near marine start. If an onos dared go in there it was fairly easy to glitch it and kill the onos inside. Also on bast when building didnt have a "no build radius" you coul spam CC's at the bottom of 'EM drill shaft' then proceed to put IP's on top of the CC's. The alliens would never find you...
I have definitely been playing since October 31st, 2002.. All this talk of babblers is making me remember another great gorge weapon that was later removed: WEBS! I specifically remember that sticky sound they made when you stumbled into one as a marine and the subsequent thought "Oh no, not AGAIN!"
I also remember calling skulks "bob" on the forums before the release..
Oh, and I still have a .mp3 of "If I had a Million Res Nodes" hanging around in my music folder that pops up on a random playlist every now and then to remind me of the great times I had playing this game.
If the NSTR counts, you could push the date back even further. I remember running around welding the voltigore models into submission, I think my biggest regret is not making a backup of the original facepainted marine model to convert over to NS1. edit: because it was awesome.
Ah yes, fade blink'ng into walls and portals outside the maps were always fun. Until they fixed blink it was alot more interesting to fly around thats for sure. and welder vs. gorge. run gorgie run!

chomped on marine legs? i barely remember some nice hitbox bugs that gave you legs-of-steel so aliens could chomp your legs as much as they want had been a lot of fun tho:)
I miss the old ns to. Don't remember which version i started to play but it was something like 7 years ago, i remember building DC on the Glass hallway in ns_hera and doing onus on it. I wish there where a server of old version. Somebody could actually make one. What version from the old ones you think was the best ?
Wasn't there on release night, but started playing a few days after. Still got to play with all the og settings and whatnot. Didn't sign-up on the forums for a few months, as you can see by my post count, I'm not much of a poster so I saw no need for it at the time.

I miss babblers, but I'm glad they were taken out, still.
Man, has it really been that long? Jeez. No wonder I always feel old. :P
Getting stuck.
Having to press /kill.
Well until /unstuck was put in =)
and maps were fixed

babblers were fun as hell, especially in red room ^_^

Marks-servers FTW
Though it didn't release till about when school got out anyway, but I hung out in IRC all day :P

This thread is win.
edit: because it was awesome.
And that one map where the marines would build a phase gate to outside the ship -_-'
Damn I miss this game
bought the NS2 special edition with TAU|Solarcurve and TAU|Mills. We'll be melting your faces soon enough.
-edit BTW, is there going to be a midnight release or something? or do we have to wait until some time tommorrow?
I have to say I'm thrilled my original account still works :D
