Slow/Stuttery Half-Life 1/ Natural Selection Performance.

I would think that my rig could put out a 60fps constant HL1 performance, and I'm pretty sure that my older systems did, but I'm having trouble with my current computer.

E2160 @3.2 Ghz. (~E6750-E6850)
6 Gig DDR2400 Ram
7800GTX stock
P35-DS3L Gigabyte mobo.
Win7 x64

I'm trying to run Natural Selection through steam. I've got it set to 1920*1200 Open GL 32 bit. However, I'm getting frequent dips down to 30 and 20 fps. This shouldn't be happening. Say an enemy gets close and starts attacking. Or just many people around at once. The marine transporter WILL trash my FPS when I look at it. Also, If I open up the menu while playing, the FPS also goes south to 30 and 20fps, which I can feel while navigating the server browser.
I've grabbed the latest Nvidia, Creative Audigy, and P35 Intel drivers. Defragged in the last 2 months at least. Checked my Half Life 1 files for both integrity and defragmented them in steam. Microsoft Security Essentials hasn't picked up anything, if that counts for anything. Deleted the profile HL folder and let steam re extract the files.

I'm running Windows 7, which I have never really gamed seriously on before. I've got as much stuff disabled as I can in the background. Indexing is definitely off.

I'm thinking about just reformatting to XP? Would that be a good idea?

Thinking it might be a bad driver, I did a driver sweeper in safe mode and reinstalled the latest Nvidia driver. No luck. Full defrag and virus scan, Microsoft Security Essentials. Too.

Ran it on another computer, albeit at 1024*768, but it was flawless 60fps on a 4000+ AMD/7700 GT Nvidia,1 Gig DDR400, WinXP Home.

Man I wish I could track this down.

Attempting full reinstall of audio drivers as well.

    FIXED:

    And the FAQ wins.

Set the HL.exe priority to "low", and solid 60fps.

I thought this would have been corrected, but I guess not. Still a problem as of 5/18/2010.

Does anyone know a workaround, instead of exiting setting "low" priority and entering each time I play the game.

The link in the FAQ which address this issues just takes me the steam forums, where it says I do not have privileges to view the topic, even as I'm registered and verified.

Your problem is probably the OpenGL driver, it isnt realy as optimised as it used to be, especially in WinVista/Win7.

Switch your rendering to DirectX or Direct3D in the options and you should see your performance increase again.

DX support in HL is terribad at best. Water fog (among other things) don't work at all, and things frequently bug up and look wrong.

Just today i switch to D3D for rendering and now i can play the game.
On start up i see the background for a brief second, then black screen.
I can also hear the background music. I can't Ctrl-Alt-Del out but i can tab out.
Anyone know a solution or how to set back to opengl rendering?
    Tried reinstalling.

Edit:fixed added "-gl" to set launch option

I have since made some changes to my system and I think the problem worsened.

Now sitting on Win7x64 with 6gigs of DDR2800, with an ATI HD5770.

What happens if I WANT to use the opengl renderer?

    See below.

    <a href="http://img192.imageshack.us/i/nsmarkssiege2v10000.png/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/4140/nsmarkssiege2v10000.th.png" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

Please note the 39.3 FPS in the photo.
I've supported a support ticket to Valve. Upon turning off everything in MSCONFIG and my antivirus, I'm not seeing any changes.

Tried Direct X. I don't like the "feel" of that renderer, as well as it also giving me bad fps.
