I think the long and the short of it is, most games have artists, programmers, writers, etc. Toady is just one dude, and his specialty is programming, so that's where he spends most of his time. Can't really fault him for that, I guess. It would be the same as looking at some amazing concept art an artist created, and yelling at him for not programming a game to go with it. If the game got popular enough, he ought to bring in some more talent, though, as long as he retained creative control. I'm surprised no developers or publishers have made him an offer he can't refuse yet. Though I guess he probably knows he'd never be happy with any finished product created under a corporate timetable so he'd rather keep it as just him.

Well, aside from Larry, and that is only one guy with a shotgun, you are fairly safe so long as you stay out of Kentucky.

Graphic tilesets in dwarf fortress is like taking a book and then replacing all the words with pictures of what the words are. But only using the same amount of space that the world takes up on the page.

T'is no bug. Ti's a feature.
IIRC you have to muddy any ground atm, before you can plant something on it. And it was intentional, to make fishing, hunting and gathering more valid.

New version is out, includes aimed strikes. It is glorious. Stab idiots in the leg so they fall down, then all over so they die. Was ambushed by bandits, but got unexpected help by the local wildlife - the Muskox attacks the Lasher, but he jumps away.
EDIT: Well, I tried a Striker adventurer, and let me say this: You haven't lived until you've punched a legendary Swordsman through the brain.
I'm caught in the usual cycle of "Ooh, I want this version, but he's still fixing bugs so maybe I should hold off...". I also tend to wait for Mike Mayday to release his graphics-ready version because I don't feel like messing about with files for 15 minutes to get everything working. Again.

I was just asking because my experience with this game is as follows. I think I had 3 dorfs who then died, cause unknown (well to me anyways). then I quit and haven't looked back at it since that one time kick in the face :D
I think I'm going to give a try again with one of those visual iso thingies alongside... Then I might get a better idea of WTF is going on, the game does seem quite intriguing

Don't play it with the basic tileset, it's stupid, use a graphics pack.

After holding off on trying to play this for like forever, i've decided to take the plunge and try it. I downloaded myself the Lazy newb compilation and stonesense from their forums. I'm off to watch some tutorial vids on youtube now.
You'll probably have more fun if you go in almost uneducated but ask us in #ns-df as you go along. Plus that way we get to hear about the spectacular failures!
