Perhaps some people may be interested in this and since I've started doing little videos I thought I'd give it a try

This is how I usually start my maps: I make a small piece then start building around it, getting ideas while working on it.

If you find it interesting I'll post more (in this thread) as I make more progress on the room.

Playlist with all parts: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=AA2972CEA949311C

Very nice. It's interesting to see how people create maps, even though im not a mapper myself but looking at these videos, its tempting to pick it up.

Very nice indeed! I'd love to see more of those videos, and some audio/text comments would be great too, even very basic ones just describing quickly what you're doing.

Keep up the good work! That's a nice stairway of the devil you've got there!

It's also cool to see how painful some time it can be to create in spark ;)
I'm so glad the ctrl+z don't crash anymore :D

Well, I'd do audio, but I'm spanish and I haven't practiced pronunciation in a very long time, so I'd rather rape maps instead of a language. There's two annotations (for the "normal" speed parts, to show tips/workarounds), I'd add more, but since it's going so fast I don't think it's gonna help much.

HOLY POOP AWESOME! That actually helped me out alot! Theres a lot of clever techniques you used that id never thought of.

That actually looks really interesting.

It's like hammer in that you drag out objects, but it's like max in that you work with planes.

Add in target weld and some of the max poly manipulation options and you'll be golden, like outline would be perfect for what you're doing there with the borders.

Fun stuff, although it outlines the rather painfully primitive way Spark forces you to manipulate the verts/faces/edges. Would have been much more lapse and much less time in an actual modeling package, I would think.

That was cool.
Although those corners in the beginning, couldn't the line tool have been used?
• ThaldarinThaldarin Alonzi! Join Date: 2003-07-15 Member: 18173Members, Constellation
The potential for error with the line tool right now would slow progress considerably.

Cool stuff Mendasp, what did you record this with?

Very nice! It definitely shows the Mendasp style! You put a lot of attention to detail.

It shows how much different people have different ways of creating their maps (well comparing your style to my style, it'll be very interesting to have a bunch of these from different people).

I would love to see more.

p.s. How do you create these videos?

I use CamStudio to record the video and Windows Movie Maker for the time-lapse (since it's not very complex it's enough).

The line tool would've worked if I had made everything with the line tool (everything welded), since I made separate faces, the line tool would get confused with the overlapping vertices. And I like to manipulate everything a bit like Hammer anyways (for obvious reasons).

Wow, yeah I learned a few tricks I never would of thought of, interesting in seeing time lapse on the rest of that room for walls, ceiling, etc. Also, if no voice-over, more commentary bubbles on your decision process... very helpful!

Very interesting to see a master at work :)

Your approach of starting with a relatively insignificant detail and expanding it to fill a room is interesting... I usually start by making the large bits and then filling in, which often results in a lack of detail in my maps. Might try it your way next time.

Please do carry on, more text comments on both your thought processes and the techniques you're applying to make them happen would be nice too.

Love the way you show the light color which can be forced on the models apparent blue-ish white colour. To overrule the model color

Great idea
And would indead be very nice to have a couple of these from different people.
Could be a way to share workflow and ideas with eachother and to learn from eachother.

Watched it. Loved it. You inspired me to work some more with spark when I have the time this week.

It is cool but waste time by rectangles, cuts, copies etc.

I prefer 3D box room and then but everything in it mostly by 3D images.
In example I can build that ladder by 3D box ladder objects.

Most of my time goes for lights & lightning.

Great video! Very helpful seeing a persons approach to a room. Id love to know how long it took you.

Love it too!
Given me some food for thought on my room I'm working on. I'm typically, get a general room size / position done and then fill 'er up... I migh try it your way... although the size of the room I'm working on and some ideas I have for it are currently reliant on some more models being available --- but I'll get there :)

I think he means when I switch light colors near the end and it shows how the "light texture" of the model changes color (all light models seem done for yellow/white lights).

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll work on the "upper level" today (I'll probably change some stuff I've already done). I don't really work for long periods of time as you may have noticed (51 minutes over 3 days!).

This is what I meant when I said it felt like I was mapping in Hammer again! This is how I used to map in hammer (except maybe not duplicating the brushes all the time).

You should make one of these!

I uploaded part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euO1QGrpmTQ

I'll work on the walls for part 3.

I also found a way to make WMM to export in HD for Youtube, so it'll look better for the next one and I'll use the editor maximized.
