After 3 or 4 hours the battles require work. I spent SO LONG trying to get past the 2nd wave of baddies when defending Redcliffe I was getting really pissy :p

I just finished doing the Redcliffe part too, the second wave is such a ######. I ended up running up and down the map with my mage, regenerating mana/hp and kiting the enemies into the squad up the top.
Yeah, the battle in Redcliffe can be though... I've done it many times with different chars, and it's either very easy (none of the archers died except the mayor) or insanely hard. I have a hard time figuring what's the key, but so far the best way I've found is to use your hounds AoE stun and Morrigan's Mind Blast/cone of cold.
Redcliffe wasn't a problem for me. Me as mage with Heal as backup, Alistair, Wynne and Zev the assassin bloke. Got as many on Alistair, and just tanked it.
Yeah, I'm hoping that there aren't any areas later after you complete the treaty quests and before the landsmeet where you have to use different party than the one you normally do. Because I installed the DA toolset and destroyed my game party by accident. For anyone who is intrested in modding the game and hasn't installed v1 of the toolset yet don't do it! It will cause bugs up the wazoo and will ultimately destroy how ever many hours you've put into the game unless you load the last save you have before you installed the toolset. This is just a friendly warning to whom it may concern.
Bioware is supposed to fix this problem and release a patch along with a fixed version of the DA Toolset. So I suggest if you feel the need to mod, wait for those to come out first.
it's weird, fights other ppl have a lot of problems with, I had no problems with, and vice versa. A lot of people seem to get cockblocked by some fight in Denerim where I think you get ambushed by a lot of archers or something. I don't even remember that fight, it was so easy. I probably just put them all to sleep or gave them nightmares. meanwhile I had to reload some stupid desire demon fight in the mage tower about 15 times before I got it.

Never did that fight with the desire demon, i tend to let her go as i play the game as a jerk.
The only really hard fights in the entire game are the first ogre for the first time and perhaps the high dragon before the urn, the rest, the last boss included, were fairly underwhelming, especially if you have a decently balanced group and some dedicated heals.
Alister tanking, morrigan and myself (rogue) dps, wynne healing, the whole game is easymode, i think the hardest thing is getting the AI to behave itself, such as Alister seemed to not want to attack half the time.

Everyone tends to do the quests differently. The first main quest I accomplished was Redcliffe/Andraste's ashes, then I went on to Denerim, the Circle, The Dalish, and am now on Ozgrammar. Not everyone plays it in the same order so some fights are harder, others too easy.
I've actually found the demon fights to be the easiest, but that may be because most demons are extremely vulnerable to cold damage. Ice is really pretty overpowered in this game. Once you get Cone of Cold it just gets to be way too easy to CC a huge mass of baddies.

If you think the cone is the ###### you are mistaken my friend. The easiest way to kill a shade, rage, greater shade demon is actually a leghold trap. When my rogue was stuck in the fade and all alone with no mage or warrior to back her up. I couldn't get to an area without killing two rage demons and a shade. I tried everything, grenades, poisons and fire arrows. In the end I wound up making about twenty flimsy leghold traps and either took the demons down to about 10% health each or killed them entirely. WITH A TRAP!!! If I had a little spare gold I would buy enough triggers to build two dozen of these before each boss fight. Just sneak in with my rogue and place them then bring the rest of my group in and watch the baddies struggle to beat the physical resistance check while they're being pummeled to death.
Personally I like the stasis field of spells the best, forcefield allows you to trap the most powerful foe for a good minute or 90 seconds which is plenty of time to weed out his lessers that would be otherwise nipping at your heels during the battle.
I was trying to challenge myself on a playthrough of nightmare this time around by restricting my use of cone of cold to 0... That didn't last. The game was too hard early on without cone of cold, and almost too easy with it. I'll just have to see how it goes as I go on...
I never tried traps, but cone of cold is multi target, and freezes even orange enemies with probably 90% success or more. It's just about recharged by the time the enemies get out, and you can shatter frozen enemies with critical hits, crushing prison, and stonefist... It's way too good. Needs a less crazy resistance check and higher cooldown
And yes, forcefield is very good; a little too good if you forcefield a warrior that just used taunt, cause the AI is too stupid to figure out that they are invincible, and will still attack them regardless.
That's how I beat the first dragon :( . Did get the (optional) 2nd one without too much bull######tery tho. Flame resistant armor sure is a make or break vs them lizards.
Crushing prison is a better alternative to forcefield if you find it too cheap. Hard to resist and locks up enemies for as long as they fail their saving thr- physical/mental checks AND does damage over time. Usually the better enemies tend to break free faster tho, especially reverends.
Anyone else managed to screw up a few quests? I.e sitting in journal, impossible to complete?

I've just started another game with a mage @ nightmare, and the bandits you meet just before Lothering were bugged too; if I threatened them by saying I was a mage, I could not get rewards or anything after killing them. I tried it 2-3 times, to no avail, but saying something else worked.
Just got this, played it for an hour as a dwarf rogue and I can't say I like it so far. My partymembers die in larger battles >_> Do I really have to tell them to drink a potion in the tcactics screen? suppose I was expecting more hacknslash than rpg :/

You make it sound like it's easier to click yourself than have them do it automatically. Just drag pots from inventory to quickbar and click away. Regular pausing is your friend unless you have crazy organization in cluster######s. Also, the game is hard, at least for me on occasions @ normal, and I have actually played the earlier games which are similar on many parts. Might just be the fact that I'm playing as fighter though.
I started a second playthrough as rogue and it's definitely much tougher than mage, especially until you get a healer. Backstabbing is fun, but I do about as much DPS on a dude with backstabs as my mage did at the same level to an entire room full of mobs with AoE. I don't think I'll bother finishing my second playthrough - not really because of that, but because I have so many other games in my queue, no time to play an (admittedly great) one twice.

Also: I know I'm late to the party, but this game is fantastic! It's like KOTOR, without lightsabers!
If I'm going for a rerun I think I'll use cheats for gold. Looking in every nook and cranny and running back to old parts with a lockpick rogue is only fun the first time. Plus I can probably manage hard without going insane on the hardest battles but then again, I wont be fighter this time around.
A quick note for anyone thinking about buying the "Return to Ostagar" DLC. I wouldn't if I were you; I just played through it and it's:
1) way too short imo, about 30 minutes 2) mostly only a revamp of the Ostagar level with some snow on it 3) lacking in the dialogue/cutscene department compared to Stone Prisoner/Warden's Keep. I played through with Alistair, Wynne and Morrigan as companions, the first two being survivors of Ostagar and the third being somehow related too. All dialogs are pretty much some "omg it's horrible" -- "I know" between Alistair and Wynne, played like those random dialogs between two companions. Morrigan didn't say a word and only gave me a -3 disapprove at the end for taking care of the king's dead body.
Some talk between Alistair and Wynne may make you smile a little, but that's pretty much all the enjoyment you'll get out of it...

Also, definitely do play it like an MMO, pull mobs seperately, tank and spank, it's pretty simple really, even on the hardest difficult.
