What stops you from preordering ?

For me it's being uncertain if the game will work on Linux. I liked NS and generally like the direction NS2 is heading to. However:

- any form of DRM, if present, is likely to prevent NS2 from working in wine.
- while the update with first 2 screenshots said the engine is meant to be cross-platform, that's still no guarrantee there will be a Linux version.

Of course very few game developers promise a Linux version before the game is ready, but I'm not dropping $20, much less $40 on a game which may not work at all for me.

boo frickity hoo. I'm with you , I would love to have it on linux. I would love to have all games on linux. I would NOT like them to waste time on it though because you know there just aren't the numbers and it just isn't worth the hassle. Get it to work on wine and be happy, that is what I would be asking for. I know you want to post this request, but its so trite...

It's not a waste of time. Around 5% of people playing FPS games are Linux players (recent data from Quake Live). More importantly, Linux people are a lot more technically capable, and more able to set up dedicated servers, create mods, maps and so forth. They need less hand-holding and provide better feedback, very rarely "your sucks because it crashed (and figure out why because I won't provide a single word of relevant information". And have you heard the term "slashdotted" ? Do you know what happens if a Linux version causes a game to be mentioned on Slashdot not to mention lesser sites ?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_effect

Now can we get back to topic ?

I hope other players come in here and voice their opinions. Let's try to avoid flaming people for desiring a certain thing. You can flame them for demanding it or criticize it's functionality, but simply voicing concerns / requests civilly is the ideal use of a forum.

The lack of a release date stops me from pre-ordering. Please don't take this to mean I'm complaining about them not having a release date - I fully understand that it's too early in development for them to give a(nother) date which they are sure won't slip. As soon as they are ready to give a solid date, however far from now that is, that's when I will be buying the game.

Also, UWE's apparent willingness to change or remove game design elements based on people whining about it on the forum (skulk size, taser, leap/bite) is extremely disturbing and worrying to me, but this doesn't affect my desire to get my hands on the Spark SDK at all.

+1. Sometimes it seems like there's no plan at all when they're reconsidering huge chunks of the game based on a bunch of people on the forums.

Don't get me wrong, this type of developer response to fan feedback is an amazing, incredible thing.... WHEN THE GAME IS BEING BETA TESTED AND THE PEOPLE GIVING FEEDBACK HAVE ACTUALLY PLAYED IT. Developing according to feedback from people who have never seen or played the game is kind of terrifying, but I do hope UWE is equally responsive during the playtesting phase.

Why and in which way should NS2 have any kind of DRM?

The likeliest way to prevent pirating would be keys you need to play online with an account.

The only possible DRM mentioned is steam, and that's more to do with steam works and it's features, such as joining a server a friend is playing or having the tabable steamworks overlay.

Steamworks is a DRM platform first and foremost. The servers and friends thing is nice, but the entire point of Steamworks was so Valve can expand their monopoly and use their DRM.

I haven't pre ordered because, one, I'm not sure how well the game will run on my 3-4 year old laptop and two, I just don't know enough about the game play. I loved NS 1.0x and 2.x but I really don't have any affection for the 3.x versions. I think I would want to try a demo before buying.

In the interest of modding I also want to know what limitations there are on map size, I thought I read somewhere that maps would be restricted to fairly small sizes.

Well I've preordered now, but what prevented me for a long time is the lack of screenshots/clips/a timeframe. The boys are being very clever in only releasing tiny snippets of information or screenshots at a time. They're baiting people. People join the forums and see a little development, get scared, and then all of a sudden there's two new screenshots - more people sign up, there's a lull, then there's a teaser video. Slowly but surely they're ensuring their continued influx of cash. If they released a proper gameplay video, or a gallery of images, they'd get a huge pre-order in a mass, but after that what else would there be left to give? Preorders would drop off.

    Marketing.

Um k. I don't want to shake your belief in the omniscience of UWE but I don't think their information releases are so sophisticated and diabolical in strategy. I think they are working more along the lines of, "ok, how often do we have to do a post to keep people interested/from losing their marbles/leaving us in droves." Marketing takes time and energy that most people find dreary and somewhat demoralizing. Especially when they are marketing their creative efforts. Every time they post they open themselves up to criticism after all, which even when it is warranted can't be called pleasant.

So, because you can get linux for free, that makes them pirates? Wow, ok.

Anyways, I've already preordered, but I do have a few friends that have not. The reasoning behind that is they say that they haven't seen enough from the game and don't really know what it's all about. They never played the first one.

It's clear to me they're using a strategy to make sales; not just "saying they want more sales". That strategy is, bit by bit release of information and screenshots, in order to keep a constant flow of interest and sales. Which is...

    :O

    A marketing strategy!

Alright, but I can see the point of it all... Pre-orders do need some faith in the company, but then again, I just want to get my hands on the alpha/map editor and heck I like this game/dev team. Besides a pre-oder can be canceled if one trays from the path of UWE :P

Pre-orders right now are a thank you to the developers. Normally, games rarely get pre-orders in this stage of their development (to my knowledge).

I don't know why people are making a big deal about pre-ordering yet. Big whoop.

    1. Its less a marketing strategy and more a... better only post things that are set in stone, and satisfy their quality standards.
Everything spreads pretty fast, if you make a wrong decision... bad publicity comes faster as you can think.

    2. Linux and the 5% of quakers wont be their first priority. You have to think commercial. 5% of XY Linux-quakers, maybe 2-3% might be interessted in this kind of fps - that isnt much for sure. They d be stupid to waste time for this.(Time is money, and money what they need...) Sry - wrong OS for gaming. But thats something you knowed before you switched to linux isnt it? (Yes i know some good titles are more or less playable, but still...)
  • TemphageTemphage Join Date: 2009-10-28 Member: 69158Members
And I'll bet 95% of that 5% of Linux players would just use their Windows install if a certain game they wanted to play DIDN'T work on Linux.
  • MuYeahMuYeah Join Date: 2006-12-26 Member: 59261Members
Yeah, 5% of those who play Quake Live, a fairly hardcore (and old) FPS is probably more like 1-2% of the total market.
