So I decided to take the plunge...

<div class="IPBDescription">I'm now a paying Apple Developer :O</div>Well almost. I got all the way to the "Take my $99 you jerks" step of the process and was greeted to a lovely 404 message.

But soon I will be a full-fledged Apple Developer, capable of building & distributing apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms.

I think I'll make a tip calculator.

    Good luck.

I made the plunge to the tune of $700 (600 for the mac mini, 100 for the developer license), but haven't really made much of it yet.

If you start considering a game-related project and need an additional programmer, send me a PM. I'm looking for some side projects to work on (with the goal of portfolio fodder and maybe a bit of cash).

    So far I'm in $900.

$800 for a MacBook, and then $100 for the license. :X

If I price my app at $0.99 I have to sell 1,400 copies just to break even at this point. Yay?

Good luck. I still haven't even started reading up on ObjC, though I did download the documents you told me to.

It really shouldn't be too hard to break even as long as you follow through and actually make it. My facebook game had more than 1400 people in the first week... though, those people weren't paying a dollar to get it.

edit: Oh there's a really good online book for learnign Objective-C if you already know c++

    Here it is! <a href="http://pierre.chachatelier.fr/programmation/objective-c.php" target="_blank">http://pierre.chachatelier.fr/programmation/objective-c.php</a>

If I may make a suggestion as a fellow programmer.. some of the biggest profit-making iPhone apps are the ones which are free to download but cleverly hint at some sort of service or some sort of ad which is entirely relevant to the app. Take Shazam. It's a brilliant piece of software (I honestly don't know how it's done). Ever hear a song on the radio and couldn't quite catch the name of the song or who sang it? Use shazam. You record for 10 seconds at any part in the song and within about 5 seconds, it will not only find out the name of the song and the author, but the album, year, genre, etc. The beauty is that it gets its money not from being bought but because after each song is listed in this way, it presents you a way you can download it to your iPhone via iTunes (and they of course charge more than the song is worth for the convenience and they make a smart profit). Of course there's nothing that says you couldn't go online yourself and download the song for free or directly from iTunes, but rest assured, the developer makes far greater profit this way than he ever would selling his application.

Though, I guess if you can't cleverly suggest an ad or paying service with your application you'll have to sell it to make money.

Speaking as someone who has developed for Mac (OS 9 and OS X) as well as Windows and Linux, I can honestly say that Apple's code libraries and their implementation of Objective C is the work of the devil. As as Apple developer you will find out how well they support their coders (not very).

In fact the way Apple have taken BSD UNIX, pulled its pants down, dressed it in a ###### outfit and put it out on the streets is worthy of a public flogging.

More speaking of OS X and coding:

    1. the keys do different things! Home/End don't work the same as on windows, ctrl+arrow doesn't jump words....
    2. mouse acceleration curve is weiird. like moving through mud.
    3. XCode sucks. I hate the UI.

1 and 2 can be fixed if you find the right programs and stuff...

In other (super exciting) news, if you're willing to spend another $400 or so (for MonoTouch), you can use XNA and C# to develop iphone games!

Doom if you made an app which sent out witty retorts to the NS2 tweets I'm sure you'd get lots of nerds buying it just to insult development. You could sell that at $5 a pop, it's amazing what angry nerds will buy.

Angry nerds should totally be your target demographic.
