Exactly what I was going to say. Also I'm not sure about you guys but I would struggle to find 2+hours to sink into a game in one sitting in a normal working/uni week.

The long games in NS were great fun at times, but often they were due to both teams not knowing what to do. Spending 10 minutes taking down an OC wall was no fun. If a game is going to be long then it needs to be paced well... it needs to grow in tension and have a dramatic ending. In 1.04 the games dragged out a lot and often ended very low.

I've accepted at this stage that people like to be big game hunters. I've seen it happen in every game I like.. starcraft bgh maps, wc3 dota, ns siege maps etc.. to me, the infinite res maps ruined starcraft, and I personally gave up playing it at lan parties when those maps became the staple. Games lose their finesse when played in 'maxed out mode'. In my opinion, NS has become a much better tuned game and in general I enjoy the 3.x games more than any other release, however I do remember how much fun we had with 1.04 - my problem is I'm not sure how much of that was due to the newness of it, and how much was due to the games being long.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Exactly my thoughts. Also I have to add that even in NS 3.2 you can have EPIC long games where the rines first get bashed, then get all tech and push the aliens back to 2 hives from 3 hives, but then still lose because of some epic alien teamwork. Yes this is all very possible with NS 3.2, you just gotta play more ;)
And actually I like those EPIC long games we have in NS 3.2 way more than those from times to times stupidly boring NS 1.04 games, where the map was split between 2 teams for 2 hours because both teams were basically camping in their oc/turret walls.

Going to have to chime in here and say that I too consider those hours long NS games to be some of the best times I've ever had playing a PC game. I had never seen anything quite like NS at the time (still have yet to) and I fell in love with it.

I think it’s that style of game play, one that requires patience, skill, and a joy from just playing the game, that was the biggest factor in creating such a fantastic, tight nit community. I don't know about now although I don't see any reason for it to have changed, but the NS community had a fantastic reputation, if not the best, in the HL mod community.

I'm not sure if I would want an exact remake for NS 1.0x but what I really loved about the early days of NS was the feeling of really being able to take and hold territory with a defined front line. In 3.x there is no territory and everyone is just free to run around anywhere they want and for me that is not nearly as fun.

    I want turret/OC spam back.

From what Flayra has said this should be pretty easy to mod after the game is released. Just reduce the structures cost, or increase the resources rate.

Puzl has described these epic 1.04 games exactly, it's a maxed out game. These maxed out games did have some use in that they really highlighted the benefits of each weapon/armour/alien.

I enjoyed those epic games, but I also remember that most of the time the games weren't that good and were very frustrating. If I had to choose I'd pick ns2 over ns1.

The way I remember these epic games going was aliens would get 2 hives, marines in 1. stalemate. Aliens have loads of res so they build structures everywhere, marines manage to get one guy a jet pack and out to the hive to build a siege and take out the hive. Aliens then try to take it back which is usually possible as they still have loads of res and structures everywhere. Therefore back and forth.

As said above Flayra too would like that back and forth in the game, he talks about getting behind the main front line and cutting off areas to change the game. That sounds similar to what those jet pack siegers were doing...

agreeing with OP. but hopefully the dev team already figured out that the vocal minority seem to be doing what they do best as usual.

What spring's into my mind when i think back to old days was a post made by a gentleman about 3 years ago. I dont remember the exact words used but it went along the lines of:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I remember in those long games wandering the halls, with literally nothing to do<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Pretty much sums up what NS was like back then. Any game in which it is acceptable to run around aimlessly for 15+ minutes has been designed badly. I enjoyed old NS, it had it's charm and i love to nostalgise as much as the next guy, but i dont look back on it with rose tinted glasses. I remember what it was: buggy, badly balanced and drawn out to hell.

I cant actually see the point of this thread at all, except for this: <img src="http://images.encyclopediadramatica.com/images/1/13/Irltroolface.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I remember the good old days, i must admit that the 2 hour + games were quite good when you were a noobie and they helped me to learn to play the classes better without the fast paced fragging action but having them back on a regular basis will probably not be too good for the game as a whole. I agree that 25-30 minutes seams like a quite long enough round.

I remember the horror when they brought out fast paced games and then NS combat... but once you get over the whole "OMG they broke the game" felling the shorter games focusing more on teamwork and tactics were actually quite entertaining and almost forced people to work as a team to win rather than as someone said, wandering the halls with nothing to do.

so yea, i remember the good old days, but in this case i dont think i would be unhappy if they didnt become reality again.
