Stickman, I agree 100% with everything you said. In a way it's sort of funny that this movie continues the grand Star Trek tradition of plot holes everywhere, although this time it was particularly egregious I'd have to say.

Initially I was exited to hear that the movie not only didn't suck total ass (as I predicted it would), but was actually quite good. But the more I hear about the less interested I am in seeing it. I keep hearing that its more an action movie with a Star Trek wrapper than a Star Trek movie, and I find that somewhat off-putting. Maybe I just miss the days when science fiction wasn't just an excuse for ridiculous special effects.

Action movies are usually about explosions; Star Trek is usually about cool technology and situations and thought-provoking plots. This one is sort of about the characters' personalities and relationships (albeit with plenty of special effects along the way).
It's all about the origins of the original crew, and if you care at all about Spock, McCoy, and Kirk, it's definitely worth seeing because all three actors pretty much nailed the characters (although Quinto, of course, can't touch Nimoy. Nobody can touch Nimoy). The others (Chekhov, Sulu, Uhura) were well done too. There's a lot of action, but it's good action and the movie isn't just an excuse for space battles. There's barely even a space battle, really, and only one phaser fight.
Of course, it's not perfect. There's a pointless space alien monster part, but hey. Get over it.

I just don't buy it. I can understand how there are no ships in space shooting the bad guy's ship. I can understand how any automatic orbital defences aren't shooting it, since he could've gotten codes or whatever from Pike, which would also explain why early warning sensors wouldn't have picked up the ship. I can't understand how a planet with a population of billions does nothing but watch as a giant laser drill digs a giant hole in their planet. The ship can stay in orbit shielded from sensors and destroy and ship that comes near them, but once it lowers a giant laser drill on a chain into the atmosphere and starts shooting, my "I can understand why people aren't doing anything" sense just crumbles. There isn't a single shuttle, transporter, phaser or bomb on the whole of Earth / Vulcan?</span>

Probably.
