<div class="IPBDescription">looking very, very sexy!</div><a href='http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>Tenebrae</a> has released some new <a href='http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=screenshots.txt' target='_blank'>screenshots</a> of the next version that is coming soon. This thing is actually starting to shape up, becoming less of a novelty/gimmick and more of a really really really cool and useful thing!

Some of the better screenies to wet the appetites of nonbelievers:

Imagine if this stuff could be done on the HL engine. :o

Note to people : This is a QUAKE1 ENGINE MOD. At first I thought it was DOOM 3.

Yes, it is amazing. Computer technology continues to astound me. Just think, years from now, people taking to Doom3 engine and making it look 10 times better. Heh.

Tenebrae is, without any doubt, the most impressive mod I've ever seen, to any game. I mean, to imagine that this can be done with the old Quake engine.. it's just.. wow! Not attempting to throw off NS or anything, obviously, but making the original Quake look better than most other games on today's market really is mind-boggling to say the least.

Yea, tenebrae is the single most amazing peice of engine coding I have ever witnessed. And yes, I played UT2k3 only a few hours ago.

btw: that shot from the opening room of the Slipgate Complex... it doesn't have skylights! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Its not really fair to call Tenebrae a mod. After all, you don't call the Half-Life engine a mod of Quake 1 either.

Also, I hate to burst all of your collective bubbles but, as I was once told, "realtime per-pixel lighting is easy. realtime per-pixel lighting that's fast, now that's the hard part". Tenebrae will rock if it ever gets fast. As of now, it is quite slow. Keep in mind color and polygon count when you measure up speed.

But man oh man, if lotsa people start making Tenebrae content, with all the niffy whatsits and whosits, man that could be really really neat. :)

I played it at a frends house, and he had a Geforce 4600 mx400 (or something, I remember it was MX). It didn't really slow down except in the really intense parts (especially with the water)

you guys don't realize that the quake1 source code has been released.

if somebody used that code, and re-programmed everything to make the engine 100x better, of course it will look better.. and of course it would basically still be the quake1 engine. Anything is possible with the source-code.

    secondly, though..
the first image looks !awesome!. the second one looks crappy (ack) third one looks too washed out

half life uses a modified quake engine, anyways
so it's probably possible, if valve improves the rendering for half-life

of course we realize the engine source is out. this kind of crap isn't possible on the mod level, especially not with quakec :P

Its just amazing that somebody actually did take the time to do this stuff. Nobody else did afterall.

As far as how it looks, remember most of those shots were taken on very very low (for today's standards) polygon counts + 8bit pallete (of brown) textures that are about 64x64.

Valve has not released the source for HL, obviously, so no, nothing like this can be done for the half-life engine yet. HL uses the Quake 2 renderer anyway fyi.

Mmmmm Tenebrae Quake 2... THAT would rock. heh.

have you seen the screenshots of tenebrae where it's some ogre getting blasted by a rocket launcher? the game realizes that the explosion is giving off extra light, and makes the shadow a lot bigger. HOW COOL IS THAT. Even cooler is when someone gets gibbed... shadows flying all over the place.

If you want the best out of Tenebrae, go <a href='http://www.project-io.org/project-io/tenebrae' target='_blank'>here.</a> The new version is out in Beta by the way, I think. Download the packs on the main page there, and you get higher res skins and higher vertex models, and whatnot.

Valve is stupid for not getting these guys to update the HL engine. So many people play Half Life...if they updated the graphics to Doom3 standard they could just keep on playing these wonderful mods with next gen graphics and everyone would be happy.

Sorta like PS2 being able to play PS1 games.

If valve wanted to, they'd do it themselves. Problem is, most of you people are running the same system you had when Hl came out back in 1999, so the update wouldn't do you any good anyway. Besides, they are busy working on TF2. bwahahahhaha, sorry, had to say it :P

I heard about this a few months back at some developer meeting that took place at my school. It looked great then, and has only gotten better. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
