<b><u>Ingame Microphone</u></b>
When a marine is talking on the microphone, and if an alien are close to the talking marine. The alien will hear him.
The closer the alien gets to the marine, the loader the alien will hear him talking. Same thing as alien.

<b><u>Now the part of understanding through microphone.</u></b>
<i>Either marine or aliens won't be able to understand each other.
Making it as fair as possible ingame, if an stupid marine screams out "Let's attack the hive in generator NOW!".
Preventing this and making it fair as possible in-game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad-fix.gif" /> </i>

<b><u>Replacement of sounds for the opposite team when hearing</u></b>
<i>Add 1-3min track for marine and alien (different sounds ofcourse), which will play different spot around the 1-3min track each time talking, when a person is talking on the microphone which the other team will hear.</i>

<b>I would like to hear what you thing, is it a good feature or not? Would it fit NS2?</b>

Pointless, people just use vent or teamspeak.

    Not sure what to say.

Many people use in-game teamchat, especially for pubs. However, this feature would be lost on higher play where only Vent is used.

My guess is this feature is to cause sneaking Marines/Aliens be heard, but the content to not be understood. This gives away positions of hiding units, perhaps also be used for psychological effect if there's a lot of them coming.

While nice for immersion, I wouldn't like it for gameplay reasons. I like being able to sneak up on people without having to worry about discussing strats on the mic. Also, it's unlogical for Aliens since long-range communication seems to be telepathic, and they merely grunt for local effect. The second reason is less important that this feature taking away freedom of talking.

Also, this doesn't cover teamchat (written text) which would then become prevalent to circumvent the feature if you wanted to stay hidden. Plus, Silence as Aliens would negate this feature as well.

Basically, cool idea, but it interferes with gameplay.

This is some of what they -may- have given up in ditching Source: HLTV, voicecoms, & proven stability.

Can they program similar things into the engine within a reasonable timeframe?

this sounds like a cool idea, but it well really downplay teamwork, which is a necessary thing.

Has the OP ever heard of Subvocalization? <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subvocalization" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subvocalization</a>

This game has all kinds of future tech, why not think of team voice/text chat as a advancement of technology that allows discussion without others in the local enviroment hearing it through sound waves?

What is interesting about this idea though is that it suggests to me that it would be interesting as a tech/bio for either side in the form of sonar, the use of sound to track and locate your opponents. Currently parasite, sensory chamber, hive sight, marine map spotting, scanning, and motion tracking are it for this kind of thing but there are other methods that could be employed with various visual effects on our graphical user interface heads up displays: heat signatures, echo location/sonar, foot prints, smell, tremorsense, etc. The current NS1 methods seem rather like just simplifications of these, which I am personally fine with but I know it could have more to it if it was desired. IMHO, it would be cool if areas that were covered in the Dynamic Infestation had some detrimental effects on the human technology and visa versa for Kharaa in areas under the influence of the nano technology.

Something similar to Canadian's ideas is Dystopia's Sound Wave Triangulation. It shows on your HUD directions of sounds and displays little triangles indicating foot steps and bullet fire. Works on invisible, but not silenced guys. Hard part can be that is picks up your friend's sounds as well, but gives them a different color.

ye, like hungarian NS players ALWAYS use a second Audio - transmitter, NEVER use a IN-FGAME voice transmitter.

the Game is concentrate the GAME only, and the Voice transmitter is keep focus on the voice.

If at all possible, a basic teamchat system in-game is a must in NS2.

However, this thread is about using people talking using teamspeak in-game as sounds sources in game as well, so the other team could find you based on you chatting on your mic.

Definitely not, there's no way you can prevent players from using Ventrilo and the more disadvantages you apply to ingame voice chat the less inclined people are to use it. Not only will the features not be used in high level play, but in pub games you'll have people using their own vent servers which isolates them from anybody on the team not using it. This is already a problem with the dead not being able to talk to the living, anything more will only make it worse.

This is assuming of course that the new engine will have ingame voice chat, which I hope they understand is a necessity...

This. NS has so much unused teamwork potential even now that I don't want to discourage any kind of teamwork even for a bit.
