You talk a lot about early development, what about the more recent build?

I personally think the biggest weaknesses in Dystopia is 1) you play the map, not the game, so you have to learn each and every map to be useful and 2) team coordination is king, which doesn't always happen. Also, I could rant about poor map designs, but that kinda falls into complain 1.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Honestly, I haven't played it in 6 months. It's that kind of thing, I tried it, it was bad, and the community hasn't grown enough to obligate giving it a second chance. Mods have to be reasonably solid on their first established version. You can't just fix problems and expect everyone to come flooding back, it doesn't work that way.

I have NO idea what drama and development has gone on in that time, but unless someone I'm E-Buddies with comes and says "hey, look at dystopia, it's actually really cool now" I probably will never go back and try it again, it could be very solid at this point in time, but I'm not currently looking for new games to play out of the modding scene right now. Even if I was, there's a small mountain of indie games and mod's I haven't even tried yet that would take priority spot to giving dys a second go.

With games, you have to make a strong impression. Dys did not. If it's capable of doing so now, then they need to seriously gear up their advertising and bring some sort of self sustaining community back to the game. If it's not, then it's a waste of advertising effort.

[edit] Kind of funny that I, of all people, would be defending this point... but MOST games you play the map. Bad map design is bad map design, but in every good game I can think of map design still plays a MASSIVE role. You certainly can't do whatever you want in NS mapping...

I also thought cyberspace combat was fine (it was just different to meatspace combat because it was more floaty due to lower gravity and friction, but it was still responsive).

And for me it made a very strong first impression but after maybe 12+ hours of playing it, it started getting repetitive and the issues with the cyberspace-meatspace synergy became apparent. Eternal Silence lasted a much shorter time for me.

They weren't buggy... just non responsive, and shallow. Cyberspace was frustrating, it was very brain dead once you learned the basics.

Pretty much all the Source mods feel horrible to play, imo though ZPS is somewhat fun to play so long as you hang with people who are fun to play with. My view is probably a teeny bit biased though, not least because pretty much the only people I play with are playtesters and devs who are just goddam hilariously good fun to play with. The way I see it, it's the kind of game that you play more for the social aspect rather than enjoyment of just playing the game and not talking to anybody (like I often do with cs1.6).

Zombie master was fun for awhile, but some players who spammed hulks and only wanted to win made it pretty boring.

I tend to use moddb instead. Moddb also has the nice feature to let you know if others think this mod is worth your time.
