Here's my vote for a linux client.
I'll buy it as soon as a linux client will be available. I play only FPS, I buy all the games I want to play, and I buy only games that have a linux client as I don't own windows.

I hope we'll see it soon running under linux. Thank you guys to at least raise the question !

I would absolutely pay for a native linux version! I would only buy a native windows version of the game if it came on the same disk as the linux version. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

After installing and using ubuntu on my own machine and using it for awhile, I've realized that linux is finally ready for the desktop. I would LOVE to see a native version of ns2 for linux. I'd much rather see a huge push off to linux instead of being stuck to using windows *sigh*..

i have always installed winxp and linux, so for me it doesnt matter (but would be nice to play on linux after i was
programming something without the need to reboot my system for optimal performance)

Though I am both using Windows XP (only a matter of time until I completly move away from Windows) and Debian Etch/Lenny GNU/Linux I would certainly prefer a native Linux-port and therefore agree with the majority of posters in this thread.
I can only say what others have said, Linux gamers lust for native ports - the interest would be great.

Still I am somewhat confused: Is the game based on the Source engine or not? I cannot really decide judging from the information stated in the FAQ.

    Nope not anymore, thats why I started this thread <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

NS2 will be made using Unknown Worlds own engine.

Thanks for the posts guys, spread the word.

That's why I asked! I read that they use their own engine but people kept talking about how they use the Source-engine for the game.
Well, an own engine gives them much more control over what they are doing so the only thing that would lack for making a portwould be either manpower or time.

I think a petition wouldn't be approriate at the moment since the Devs know about the situation and it's really just up to them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Yeah no need for a petition as they have said they are interested in the idea, I just want people to show their interests so that the devs no this isn't a dead horse.

I just subscribed to this forum only to say that I'll surely buy a native Linux version of NS2.

I have dual-boot with Windows XP, but I won't buy a Windows version of the game because I'd have to reboot and stop all my activities just to play, so I wouldn't do it!

I have both Gentoo x86 and AMD64 installed on different machines, so I'd willingly beta-test linux versions (both 32 and 64 bit) of the game and maybe (if I'll have enough time) help in translating it to Italian... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> but only when the native Linux client will be released!

PS: if I wrote something bad... sorry, english isn't my native language ^^

A little late (-.-'), but will show support nevertheless. A native (and also amd64) version of the game would be amazing. In ns1 I suffer framedrops as low as 20 fps under wine (I have an 8800gt).

And since you use your own engine, then perhaps you can encourage others to use it as well? Especially if it is better than the source engine.

Id love a Linux version of NS2 (I mostly just run windows for games and vnc to a linux machine for my web browsing/email etc). I realise you might have problems with steam distribution (although I gather wine might help there) so Id _live_ with a windows only NS2 client.

But what Id really say is 100% needed is a linux version of the server, for we pathetic few who run servers and want nice easily hosted and controlled servers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    cheers,

Well, the fact that they haven't shut this down really quickly, i.e saying "Never gonna happen" is great.. I mean Charlie even said on earlier page it's a possibility.. I'm actually really surprised!

Obviously I'd say with the initial release it will be Windows only, though if an OpenGL version followed, it would be really cool, and I know doing so isn't as easy as hitting the "convert from DirectX to OpenGL" button.

Keep in mind that one of the big things that Charlie says is to unite people through games, and it would be quite fitting to support other OS's, and allow cross-platform play!

And also, this is their own engine, so that changing things to OpenGL would be much more possible and feasible than if they had of kept using Source.

Also, having an OpenGL version of the game brings the possibility of porting to the PS3, and future OpenGL compatible consoles, which could prove a good choice for revenue making.

And also (lastly), no matter what they did, I would play it regardless of OS requirements. It's such an exciting looking game!
