I DO use Windows for most of my stuff (most of the software i need for my works simply doesn't come for Linux), however I'm not happy with it. Should there be a native Linux Version of NS2 (Debian stable), I'd buy it instead of a Windows version.
(That is, if I ever manage to get my Ati Radeon 9600 to work >_<)

    Greetings, Schnitzel

How about a Solaris release? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> Na that's probably asking for a bit too much, a Linux release would definitely be good. Not sure if i would buy Windows or Linux tho :S

    Just joined the forum to reply to that thread also <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

NS2 on my Ubuntu... that sure would be smooth gaming.
I would buy NS2 if there was a native linux port!

I too, am about to format my PC to Linux only, and begin the headache of getting my games to work under it. I use OSX or Linux everywhere else, but my gaming PC has been the last to be touched.

I think we're not talking up a simple point that could have a major impact on UWE's bottom line, their new engine. You've developed an engine that can have plenty of shine, yet run on low specs, and if you built it as a multi-platform engine, with *nix in mind, the implications of licensing that engine are HUGE. Epic is the only other company discussing native linux support, and you see how long it's been and no delivery.

Seriously, Ubuntu has made Linux a modern competitor for Windows, and if game developers found an engine they could develop on that satisfies Windows gamers on quality, yet opened the door to linux and OSX platform users, you are on a gold mine.

Granted you have to realize that with the slim offerings on these other platforms, many more people are going to look at NS2 simply because it is available to them when so little else is, thereby expanding the userbase.

I too, hope (and pray) for a native linux client on OpenGL.

I would love to play NS2 on Linux too :-)
Please make a 64bit version of it as well since that is what I run.
When you have a 64bit machine why not have a 64bit OS if everything works perfectly (except Flash of course hehe)

I tried hard to figure out my password for this account to let you know I would buy a Linux copy. Gentoo User (Stable) here.

I would let all of the Freenode community know. And let the Gentoo developers know of a Linux native client and have it added into the portage package system.

    EDIT:
Also I would mention that I bought 5 copies of ET:QW just to play them on linux and to give them to buddies to try it out on linux.

    a plattform independent ns2 would be nice, but steam isn't platfom independent <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> is there any solution?

I would definitely buy a native linux port. If specific distros were to be targeted, Debian would be my vote 8)

The only downfall of Linux is the lack of commercial games, and yes there are many linux gamers out there.

Oh, and fyi, Linux = PC.

I'm all for it, i love fedora linux so much more than windows, but wont it be kinda hard to run ns2 without direct x, and is steam even supported via linux?

too bad linux doesn't have the support for graphics development like microsoft's direct x has, linux runs everything so much more efficiently since it does not bog itself down with services like windows does. I seriously cant see why there is no push for gaming on it, you would probably get over a 30% increase of performance using a linux distro given people start using it and developers would shift to linux instead of windows.

    <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2008/12/steam-linux-on-the-way-left-4-dead-carries-linux-binaries.ars" target="_blank">wait, could it be?</a>

Ubuntu user here would definitely buy the Linux version of NS2.

The question is: How many of you will not buy the windows version?

This has always been the problem for linux gamers.

I would be happy with an OpenGL renderer for performance using wine on Linux, and then any major bugs with running ns2 on wine ironed out. Not sure how much time this would save from doing a full port, but at least people could still use Steam. I think Max said the D3D rendering code wasn't that many lines, so this seems by far the easiest way to get the game working well on Linux. Not that I really know anything about it!
Obviously from a 'helping Linux' point of view, a full port is much better, but I can't see UWE being that interested in trying to support this goal when they probably have enough problems keeping themselves going...

I would buy both. I'd want a liscene for each of my machines.

Well, I just got NS working on Mac natively with Crossover Games, so I'm JUST about ready to remove my bootcamp partition.

HOWEVER, running it natively would still be the best. And if it's Windows only on launch, I'll still be purchasing it at launch, then another copy when it's multi-platform.

I feel that it would make the most sense to allow the key-code to be used for both the Windows and Linux/Mac games. Then you don't have to worry about buying separate games. Just download and activate.

Well, I bought the 40 Buck version, remembering threads like this one, where the Devs that posted did not quite have a hostile position towards the idea of having a Linux port.
I bought it to support the development and in the hope that, as soon as there is some time to do it, there'd be a Linux Client for NS2.

Of course I did all this in the assumption that the key will work for that Linux version too and because it would be madness to have separate keys or even close to impossible.

I have no access to Windows, I bought the game solely to support your development and because I think that NS1 was quite great.
Sure, I could download Windows just somewhere... but I'd rather die than installing that piece of .....

If you had to pick a specific distribution, my vote should be counted for anything Debian based.
But if you got it to run on one distribution, getting it to run on the others ain't that hard anymore.

I already bought a copy but.. I'd definitely play in linux if it was available. Hell I may end up playing in WINE, depending on how it runs.. I know Steam/HL2 run pretty well if you've got some beefy hardware to throw at it (My 7900GT had poor performance, my GTX260 has very good performance).

However, I said this in the dedicated server thread, but I'll repeat it here. I'd hate to see NS2 delayed just so that it's crossplatform. We can deal with it just running on Windows until there's time to port it. (And this is coming from someone who's nickname comes from linux)

I agree. As much as linux needs GOOD native games, I would rather see the release date adhered to. Judging the success of NS1, the community will last in time for a native port.

+1 for debian distro's. Ubuntu is one of the most popular distro's now that it is so user friendly to install and use.

    +1 for NS2 on *nix

I'd rather play on Linux if I could, but I mean like many *nix users I've got a Windows partition for video games.

Charlie, Max (And the rest of the Unknown Worlds Entertainment team)-

Good for you guys for picking cross-platform tools. Do keep using those when possible, or develop in-house tools that could be ported at a later date. Also remember anytime you're using a platform-specific resource (DirectX calls) to document them and make them 'pluggable' to save yourself headaches later :-D

Get the Windows version done, I just pre-ordered mine. (Also had to figure out my login here too, it's been far too long)

When you get the Linux port done, I'll be buying at least another copy, of the Black Armor Edition. (Need it for the second machine, so both can play, and I can show friends the game!)

You've already got a great game (NS1) and a rabid fanbase (as shown by the preorders paying for shiny armor, paying for the chance to be part of your QA/Testing team, and... supporting you guys) - you make it cross-platform, and you'll have a not-insignificant amount of sales.

    I know I'd help push it, cross-platform :-D

I just redownloaded NS1 again...(for the umpteenth time) and am about to re-immerse myself in the world of Marines and Aliens...

...and this time, I'm bringing my friends with me...

Been some time i played NS last time, but i loved the game, was there from day one (well, even before, but i played on that great halloween night).

I preordered the special edition, and i really hope a linux version will come. Don't forget that releasing on linux will get you a huge publicity, perhaps even a slashdot frontpage news, and because linux has many fanatics (like me), you well get a strong fan base that adverts the game.

I don't expect that there is a release for linux and windows on the same date, but i really hope that eventually there will be a linux release! specialy because the engine uses opengl (true?), so porting shouldn't be impossible.

    keep up the great work
