It seems like a good idea to keep the commander interface the same across all resolutions and ratios, so in widescreen mode the chat area will expand to fill the extra space, but that's it.
@ the people who are concerned about progress, I would much prefer the game to be done when its done rather then done when 'those guys on the internet' think it should be done. Theres been a pretty solid trend of games which are released before they are done being ######house. I think its in everyones best interest to put their faith in the devs that they will release the best game they can when they can rather then whining about release dates and betas and alphas and gammas.

If you bind the buy menu a bit more to the right on the keyboard, lets say to 6th or 7th key rather than 5th (assuming that 1-4 will be the weapon slots), then it should do the trick.

I must be missing something here, maybe you can help me figure out what it is:
The NS team has decided to cut down on the number of menus you have to navigate by....making the default bind for the menu one of your weapon slots? How does this impact how many menus you have to navigate in any way? How does this impact <i>anything</i> in any way except making the "next weapon" and "previous weapon" functions occasionally pull up a menu instead of a weapon?

I guess it means they're not doing the fiddly "heads up" tree-view-like expanding menu form NS 1. Can't say i'm disappointed to see it go. Seems to me they're saying the gestate menu key is bound to 5 <i>by default</i>, this does not automatically mean it's a weapon and would therefore appear in the weapon cycle. If you're worried about calling up the menu while <i>mashing the keyboard</i> i'm sure they'll let you bind it to something else.
Awesome awesome mockups! I have a few thoughts on what's been released to us so far.
I still don't know how I feel about marines buying their own equipment. One of the things I always noticed about NS was that equipment was a HUGE incentive to get the commander's orders done. The marines who followed orders and performed well could be rewarded with that JP or that heavier weapon. I'm kind of worried that once people no longer have to comply to get geared up, there will be more rambo-ing than before. Perhaps as a middle solution, the commander could decide or influence how resources are allocated? Manually doing it might be just a pain in the butt, especially in large games. However, maybe the commander could give "bonus" res to a player who does complete an objective. (this is assuming that the marines each get their own res somehow at some kind of regular interval) A second possibility is setting up an automated system that allows the commander to increase the amount of res allocated to each marine. All 'rines would start at a level "1" or so, and the commander could increase the priority level/rate that a specific one gets by clicking the level up.
Secondly, on the alien HUD. The idea of the HUD being part of the eyeball's composition is fantastic! However, maybe there could be some more visual cues, such as blood vessels going off of the HUD components, and maybe some particle effects in a small area around the components. Since the aliens can obviously focus in on this part of their eyeball to see the HUD clearly, it would be cool to show the other small surrounding part of the eyeball that's somewhat in focus.
The auto-grouping is a great idea. I hope it works, but I can also see how it could hit problems. Good luck working it out!

I understand that, I wouldn't want it released before it was ready either. What does concern me as far as progress is concerned has only to do with since they started doing payroll, office space, office supplies, and all the rest now that they have secured investment - investors won't wait around forever to recoup, pay dividends, and the like ... the budget is the time table, not anything I say, so I have some concern when its mock ups rather than screen shots or recorded demo we're seeing for their own well being, not out of a sense to whine that I don't have the game yet. Understand?
hey guys dont be affraid to get creative with this game. especially with weapons! last ns models 4 guns were alright. i really dislike boring weapons that look the same in every game! also more aliens or guns.
also wats wrong with the source engine? howcome we can't have vehicles? ive seen mods with em. also why not another race?
and make sure you have the dynamic infection coz it looks really cool. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />
We can have vehicles, but it wouldn't be very much like NS if it was wide open areas (and anything else would make vehicles fairly pointless). Another race could be done, but is 1. overused concept, and 2. hard to balance.

I'm glad you gave some HUD pictures and context in the podcast to the direction you are trying to go. It reminded me of <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103770&st=0" target="_blank">a discussion</a> we had awhile ago.
Would you all mind if photoshop a marine weapon selection GUI that would show implementation of the <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102035" target="_blank">customizable weapons armory idea</a>?
I'm also glad to see that you all are taking the<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102053" target="_blank">command hierachy</a> thread seriously, but I would like to see it expanded to actual squad leaders. There a definite behavioral effect on people of having you squad leader standing with you in battle that is both fun and allow for more streamline organization. (I don't mean just games. It can be observed in everything from working in retail to in the middle of a fire fight in a street war in the army to bicycle racing in a pack to contract construction work...)
Oh and one last thing, is it safe to assume that UWE is official trying to keep to Charlie's "rule of thumb" of the 1/3rd old, 1/3rd revised, 1/3rd new? I think that was one of the wisest ideas for a new game development company, and if you combine that with continuing to listen to your community's critical feedback to help you refine those... how could NS2 <i>not</i> come out as one of the most polished ground-breaking game in this decade? (if not a historical moment in the game industry) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
looks amazing guys !! keep it up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> realy cant wait.
i like the idea of getting your own guns and keeping the ammount of guns small. with addons for them guns because then maybe more addons can come in later updates or something. the squad thing looks cool on the commander and i love the idea of having seperate energy for different abilities when being an alien. defonately have blurring out on the buy menu and i like how each marine get their own resources like aliens do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> keep up the good work guys
Hmm..if the reason for the buy menu is to make things easier on the commander, why not just make it like this. Lets say your near the armory and you do the voice command "I need a shotgun" and the commander, regardless of where he is, presses "s" assuming that s is binded to shotgun drop, automatically drops a shotgun on that player that asked for one. This way the commander can be anywhere on the map and all it takes is a split second to press one button.
I would keep the menu for buying upgrades though. Also I didn't see anywhere about how the res distribution is being worked out because.. if its all global, and if this buy menu system stays in.. then I foresee a huge amount of team based fighting and arguments arising, about who is wasting all the resources and that less skilled players shouldn't be spending all the resources and so forth.
Actually this just came to me but, in another rts/fps game called Savage, it has two resources one is strictly for building ( redstones ) and another for purchasing and also building ( gold. ) So when you gain gold by killing another player, some of it goes to you, the other goes into a global gold pool used by the commander or other players, so this way, you will have your own stash from what you've gained, and also being able to use the resources collected in the over all pool, which works very well. They've added a feature to where the commander can put on a tax, where they select the percentage of gold that goes in the pool, like if its set at 100% then that player would gain 0, and all of it would go in the pool.
I know this is off the subject but as far as maps go, I hope they make a few, extremely well made, balanced, with an atmosphere that draws you in, over multiple maps made half assed. basically 5-6 great amazing maps, over 10-11 semi ok maps.

Ah ok good to hear, thanks for the info. Also yeah Savage is a lot of fun, doesn't compare to the glory days of NS, but still a all around fun game. May I suggest something simple like a side commander bar ala the Command&Conquer series?
^ nice.

Almost definitely a joke. I'd say definitely except there's an kharaa commander and marines are buying their own weapons. There's that outside chance that they're floating the idea of a "builder exoskeleton" suit for marines they're thinking of incorporating.
It is a joke, and a funny one at that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Reach for the stars!

i like the idea of getting your own guns and keeping the ammount of guns small. with addons for them guns because then maybe more addons can come in later updates or something.
the squad thing looks cool on the commander and i love the idea of having seperate energy for different abilities when being an alien.
defonately have blurring out on the buy menu and i like how each marine get their own resources like aliens do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
keep up the good work guys
I know this is off the subject but as far as maps go, I hope they make a few, extremely well made, balanced, with an atmosphere that draws you in, over multiple maps made half assed. basically 5-6 great amazing maps, over 10-11 semi ok maps.
yeah savage's system sounds pretty good. i've never gotten around to trying that game though.

i'm pretty sure that was the plan; they were going to have 5 or 6 visual sets, and one map, on release, for each. it was in an earlier (somewhat recent) podcast i think.
to marines will be harder to make rush whit JP or HA

Ah ok good to hear, thanks for the info. Also yeah Savage is a lot of fun, doesn't compare to the glory days of NS, but still a all around fun game. Ever since NS, RTS/FPS have became one of my favorite genres of games, yet... there are way way to few of them, which makes it a problem for someone that enjoys them a lot..

... this is going to be a veeeeeery good game, .. till i can play it, i´m going to play NS .. ^^ with my friends <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
keep on <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
What if the commander could assign the % of res that went to weapons, and to upgrades/structures. that would keep strategic diversity open. Marines could still SG rush @ the start of a game(if they REALLY wanted to) or they could be a miser with all there res and turret farm.
I Love it!
But the buy Menu for marines, is scary.
I hope the commander can give the players money and take it from the players(with a limit to buy a sg or something).
I miss playing NS so much, but there at the moment not many good server.
I am very sure, NS2 will be a bestseller, if the fans hear about it.
Many people stop playing that game.
I know its a concept but the Textures of the first mc looks a little bit comic style...not good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
