Question from a server OP
What do the players prefer?

Seeing the message "There are no unreserved slots left"

or when an admin joins, the player with the highest ping gets Kicked?

Just want to hear some opinions from you players

EDIT: typed banned instead of kicked... silly me

I'd prefer to see the 'Reserved Slot' message

How about just makeing it lfo?
If someone enters a allmost full server he gets a warning that he may be kicked to make room for op or what not.
Would be the best of two worlds. He knows that he might get kicked and there would be more people to work with or kill

Well, autokick seems to be a bit more reasonable, because then at least someone can use that slot while the admin(s) aren't on. Just give them a warning beforehand during the server connect message that they may be kicked, and that should be enough. Ideally, the best way to do it might be to have the people who joined last be the first to be kicked if an admin needs a slot.

I would rather be in there playing for an hour and get kicked by an admin, than sitting there typing "retry" over and over until I can play.

Wait a second, highest ping? Why would you want to boot the player with the highest ping? What if the player with the highest ping has been in the game longer than anyone else and has the highest score?

Better would be to boot the person with the lowest time in-game. Half-Life does, after all, keep track of the time each player has been on the server. If an admin joins, better a player with a ping of 32 who has been in the game for 94 seconds to be booted than a player who has a ping of 361 and has been in the game for 94 _minutes_.

EDIT: Please note that it is a completely untrue superstition that players with high pings raise everybody else's pings.

since there is no feasible method to determine which player to kick, i prefer reserved slots. it's a question of fairness.

[edit]: omg no, not a ping discussion again. having a higher ping does NOT make you an inferior human being.[/edit]

Well my opinion about "no reserved slots available" is very, VERY **obscenity** annoying.
I was having this great game on one canadian server and the place was filled with one of the nicest and best class players I have met. So I asked if one fade would need a lerk sidekick and he accepted the offering and we were ready to confront the nme in one corridor and guess what happens?

I got kicked because some OP probably wanted his **obscenity** to the server so he decided to give me the "No serverved slots available" in the middle of the good game.

my god I was so **obscenity** I was ready to rip the OP's head off.

    I rest my case.

do you mean kicked? banned is a little harsh

I would have to say the first option seeing as getting banned sucks

Hmm, I wouldn't mind if there was reserved spots, if you would tell us that there are reserved spots in the server name.
That would fix a lot of annoyances.
Like someone said up further: If 1 person has a high ping, they DO NOT lag the server.

pings dont mean much in ns tho

ive seen 400 pings and stuff like that and its completely smooth
the only thing pings really super matter in is counter-strike

Yeah, and so many weapons in NS are hitscan anyhow, so get the benefit of client-side lag correction. Unless they removed it in NS.

Id much rather be kicked, unless there was a better way to do reserved slots, as of now when you look and see 2 slots available its really frustrating to go all the way into half-life to find out there’s no room. Also its hard to tell when someone leaves if it was someone using a reserved slot or not.

    Just my two cents

I would prefer Reserved slots, although I do not mind getting Auto kicked if I know it could happen before hand. When I just all of a sudden get kicked and don't know why, without any prewarning it is really irrating. Also prefer reserved slots because lets say you got 10 peeps with pings from 50 to 150.. the one with 150 gets kicked right? His ping is just fine and maybe he was the best playing on either team, or maybe he even was the commander... This could turn the tide of game and fast. It is amazing what one person can do sometimes.

I agree with everything he said except for the reserved slots thing. As long as I am warned before I get kicked, its all good.

The way I've found to handle it is pretty simple. My server is actually a nine player server, but thanks to the sv_visiblemaxplayers 8 command I have in server.cfg, my server shows as an 8 player server to the world. The ninth slot is reserved for me. That way when I have 8 players, it shows as 8/8. If you try and join my 8/8 server, you get the "slot is reserved" message. When I join, the server shows 9/8.

    Hope that helps.
