It is all because of age groups, people just starting sophomore year (grade 11) are not starting college and with this they have less time. Also girlfriends, wanting to do more in their studies also complicates it. People are loosing interest and people are gaining interests. It is just for people like most of us (1.04 vets and people that have been here from the start) do have obstacles at time that prevent us from playing as we would like.

I for one have had less playing time. Two years ago when I started to play I was in 9th grade and recently left the CAL-m scene because I felt my friend were more important. I was not a very book studying person (with leaving computer related things easy for me though) so my GPA idled around 80. As time moved on and I kept playing NS getting better and better the summer of 9th grade was coming up and I was in my "prime" where I joined cri (a veteran team at the time) and most of that summer was spent with NS/friends. 10th grade rolled around and I ended up playing more and more ns until about December in what I called "The beginning of the end" of me playing NS. I became a well known figure in the community not for skill though, because of my antics. I then started to go out with my girlfriend (and still am) in January in which I pretty much stopped playing NS. This of course was until I started a clan that did not last long but sure left a mark (with drama of course). By then I was playing ns about an hour a week and that was scrims. This was because I tried to move my GPA up more and started a college programming class that I got accepted into (which I finished with a 3.0 GPA being third in the class) and my girlfriend. Don't get me wrong, I still had a lot of interest in NS and did try and squeeze in whatever playing time I could and ended up getting my infamous "0-13" score with my connection dieing on me. Then I was approached by WiredLabs (and AmpedNews) Sypher to start and lead their Natural Selection division. This ended up being a big hit but slowly died after I left (and is not starting to come back again). Now, I play NS when I have the free time while having it squeezed in with helping my mother from time to time (who has about four disease including things that cause her to have seizures and is still diagnosed with chronic alcoholism so that doesn't help when she takes her medicine), girlfriend and school. Also including my passion for computer programming as I will have about one year of Computer Science done (9 out of 12 credits) and still on other free time learn PHP/Flash MX 2004 as a hobby. However, even though their is other things that I do I was here from the start of the community and will be with it till its untimely death.

This is just an example of one persons time restraints pushing him away from NS but yet, being him back now. This happens to many people and I am sure has happen to a few people in this Playtester group.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

God. That sounds hauntingly familiar for me... Not the specifics of course and my mother is fine. But for me it's more financial issue based now, which started by me screwing up back in 2003. NS was one of few constants and thus my everlasting loyalty to the community and the game, but on the dark side it also was an escape at times for me in very bad times when I was exceedingly unhappy (ie: when I was breaking up with my ex-fiance, which resulted in skipping some classes, which resulted in procrastination, which resulted in doing poorly in classes I know I could have aced, etc...) It's not something I blame NS or even myself for in retrospect, as it was a symptom of a larger problem and not the actual cause.

I've gotten past those painful (if seemingly unfairly so) life lessons and now I'm just a hardworking poor single good guy who works two jobs and is currently trying to save up money. I was hoping to resume college in the fall of this year (and very excited about school to be honest), but it will require student loans and FASFA stuff and whatnot. The bad news is that it is NOW that the economy decides to slide into recession and the fed has already blown the budget on foreign wars like the European nations of the last millennium. (Aside: Dear President Bush, do you know what opportunity cost means? Don't even think of looking at your "experts" to tell you the answer.) So student loans are getting more expensive and states are cutting secondary education funding. Gee thanks...

Anyways, I'm getting off-topic (and I've already spoken too much). Yes, I do still play NS, but it's very rare (ie: about 1-2 times per month, sometimes split time with TF2 or something else old friends are playing) Shockingly, I usually <i>schedule</i> my rare game time these days, and even then that's partly because it's usually a LAN where we can all go online and play together.

Hello in here i'm known as Th3bQf, but in NS i'm known as Beefcake.. (Just so you know whos talking).

Well 7 years (soon) have I been playing NS and I still enjoy it as much as the first day. But to Rabbits question if people still play NS then I can say "Yes!" big YES even..

Many people are starting to come back into NS again also all of the old BM (Baconmen) players are back a lot of swedish players has come back and also other players around the world are starting to turn up again. So maybe an again new age of NS <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />..

    I hope this answers your question a little bit Rabbit you crazy ###### <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />..

I'm an occasional NS player since dec '02, I never turned my back on this game, i love it but don't have time for clanplaying and every year I have another crappy ISP.

I wasted lots of hardware due gaming but NS flatlined most of my keyboards & mouses, also
my hifi, a pc, 2 monitors, some other stuff and the latest was my ISP modem last week when I had a lagspike of 900 and I got verry agressive (again) and trashed the damn thing all over the place (got it on vid <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />).

    Whatever, NS is cool <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I also played NS since the beginning like many of you in this thread.
Just started play NS again after getting a new computer 3 weeks ago.
Alot have changed since i last played, especially the co_ where every server is having the extra levels plugin.
I really miss the good old days when ns_ was the main type of game and games could last for hours.
Nowadays it almost feels like the spirit of ns_ maps is gone, people getting restless after 15minutes and they rush.
And the game has changed to much from what is once before was.
Its still fun tho, but not as good as it used to be.. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I have been around since the tech release for mappers found NS on moddB and played it for hours and hours in high school, later to be addicted to it for a year after school and moving into WoW then life got me and I have a son now. But a few rounds of NS are always fun, killing bots keep it happy cuz you already know they cheat haha. Hadn't played in 2 months with a new job and girlfriend taking up lots of time not to mention lack of a real high speed connection but jacked some wifi for a few rounds makes it always fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" />

NS is one of those games that can get old but only if you don't have fun with it, lots of the new games coming out are fun to play though but don't have good online value. They look good but aren't dynamic like NS is.

I think what happened is that, as time passes, more games come out, and what the players found that made NS unique has been perhaps found elsewhere, in a format more to their liking.

Consider that most of the recent FPS games have had asymmetric gameplay, Team Fortress come back out, PSN and Xbox Live deliver a quick and easy teamplay experience. I know a lot of people are waiting for L4D. NS by comparison looks dated, Combat tends to dominate (your ping may vary), the mod itself is no longer widely promoted, and I believe that these things count against it in today's market.

Don't get me wrong, Combat has its place, but other asymmetric FPS games already do this and can do it better. Whats more, they do it persistently across games. This is not saying Combat killed NS, it is merely saying that new players going to the populated servers will be left wondering "what is the point?".

Some of the old school players have family now, some of them will be at Uni or starting their career, and they wont have the time or inclination to play this game. Without players to pass on the word, our pool is diminished. You might find a player wanders in from Steam or perhaps he heard about it in another forum. Old OLD players may have drifted out of gaming altogether. NS appealed to a specific type of player, we cant really "poach" them from other games. Its not like CoD poaching the Battlefield crowd or vice versa. You're talking about a unique game experience losing out because of its age and shrinking player pool.

Its not all DooM and Gloom however (pun pun), because despite these newer games taking elements of NS, none of them can really offer the complete package. Commander and Marines vs Aliens is still fairly unique in the gaming world. NS players are long term people, and when NS2 emerges, you'll have a surge of oldies coming back. Is that a good thing? Who can say. However, it'll reinvigorate the existing community and help promote a new one.

The take home message is that NS persists. Even now, game reviews for the likes of Huxley and Savage 2 will constantly refer back to NS. Not bad for a mod on an ageing platform. People STILL come back to NS because it gives them what no other game can. For all NS' problems, the gamers come back. THAT is the strength of NS.

The annoying part is having to wait for the next version, haha!

Back to the topic at hand. For the curious, my situation is a case of work overriding gaming, lack of servers, and moving to casual gaming. Online console play gives me an almost guaranteed good game. I'm still looking for a good server though, so perhaps you might see me around?

Another issue with coming back to NS now is that there is only casual play... coming back the game was still the enjoyable game that I fell in love with years ago, but the structure and stratedgy of scrims is gone!

Playing on servers where there is no discussion on chamber order because it's the same order everytime... ppl who comm don't have much variation in what they do, gets boring. =P

Man Ns is great, I just picked it back up since it's summer time.
I remember a friend of mine got me into it the first year it came out, I became way too into it.
After that it was on and off then stopped for maybe 1-2 years. Wish the community was they way it used to be
