I still can't believe it either...
Well it happened yesterday. I found out that it turns out, nobody in the entire state rents GameCube systems, so the Metroid Prime fix I had been looking foward to binging upon this week since around the end of August was not to be. And I was upset, so very upset. And with no thanks to my mother and my friend, who were for some reason supportive of my illogical ideals, I ended up finding a GC for $100 at a local pawn shop and forking over the $$. Of course first I had to FIND one that had it, which resulted in me and my friend calling every single pawn shop in the entire phone book. We found one.

So I go buy it, but you can't just buy a GameCube! You need accessories! And I'd be damned if I didn't pick up the game I bought the system for in the first place! So a trip to Best Buy was in order, where I purchased Metroid Prime (I wish I had a video of me doing a saddistical grabbing of one of the only 3 remaining copies, nearly pushing children out of the way to do so), an extra controller, and a memory card (64MB for $10, only GOOD deal I got all day). As the check card for my first bank account (I have two because of location/school reasons) was declined due to lack of funds, while I was offering the cashier my other card I realized that I would be eating beans and cheese for the rest of the year because I am so broke. But at least I finally had everything. Or did I?

Of course not. You can't have a LAN party, with your friend bringing his X-Box as well, and have just a single player game, no no no. So the last $15 in my wallet went towards renting games you people suggested: Res Evil (I still think it will suck, but haven't tried yet), MK5 (man I'm gonna end up buying this one), and Capcom Vs. SNK 2, which is sadly so awful it makes me weep and cry out in Ken's name.

So after playing MK5 and a little bit of NS last night, today before I had to go to work I managed to fit in 2 hours of Metroid Prime. It was at this time that I realized that all my money was worth it. I feel that Prime and MK5 alone are justification for the cost of the system, they are both that good. I know I'll manage the financial aspects of it, and I do feel quite satisfied with my purchase (rather than if I would have gotten an X-Box or PS2).

But the fact remains that this is the first console system I have owned in the past 9 years, and I am just quite uneasy about what to think of that. I grew up playing Nintendo, and later Genesis and SNES, but with the death of the 32X I swore off console systems and metamorphasized into a 100% hardcore PC gamer. In all these years the only time I even partially desired a console was for Metal Gear Solid and then later GTA3 and MGS2. Even then I was able to resist, knowing they were all coming to PC sometime. But that all ended yesterday.

I am now a console gamer again.

And I just don't know what to think of it.

I realize this was a very very long post. Thanks for allowing me a place to express my feelings on this matter which I fully know I am placing too much emphasis upon, and also for letting me use the really really big words I know that make me feel smarter, but can't muster up on IRC. :P

I've always been a console gamer at heart. I can get bored with computer games 2X faster than console games.

Bah, another one slips into the handheld-input device hell that is console gaming.

    /me pets his computer case.

    Glad you're enjoying it, though.

That makes me feel a lot better Cyanide. :)

I also feel that I am sticking with my principles. I've always laughed at people who get into arguments of PC vs. Consoles, PS2 vs X-box vs GameCube, etc, with this simple reasoning:

    I play games, not systems.

Yay! I like that reasoning. Financial issues aside, I always think it's silly that people feel the need to restrict themselves to PC games, almost as if to save face in some cases.

With the same reasoning you described here, I decided to focus only on PC gaming for a while. Then, a few years ago, I recieved a DreamCast as a totally unexpected gift, and found myself enjoying my free time on it waaay too much. Quite like I did back when I was little, and NES was hot. Since then I've loosened up to the whole thing, and am thoroughly enjoying the newer consoles.

While PC gaming will always be king in my eyes, considering the community and amateur development aspects, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a blast on your console every now and then.

Amen to that! Personally, I prefer PC games over console games, but I still play console games occasionally.

If you keep yourself to one platform or another for anything other than financial issues, you're missing out on something. I've got a Gamecube, my roommate has a PS2, so we just share each other's games when we're extremely bored.

Other than NS, I'm shocked to find myself saying that I rarely play games anymore. This will definitely change over winter break though, I plan on renting Metriod Prime.

I'm sure that'll change over winter break for most of us, heh heh. But all in all, good to hear DOOM. I'm still too poor to do much console gaming, but on the upside between my roomates and I, we've a PS2, XBox and Gamecube, but none of us can really afford games.

    Truly a pity..

After having to install UT2k3, which takes up two and a half GB's and STILL needs the CD in the drive, had the CD key on the back of manual instead of on the CD case, required me to download a video driver that didn't really finish installing, and then having to go hunt for a place where I could download the UT2k3 patch without signing up for everything, I am seriously thinking about picking up a next-gen console, so I can just sit down and play the frikkin' game. I've heard so much praise about Metroid Prime that I am most likely gonna check it out.

I don't say I don't like consoles, there are pretty good games on it. But.I will just stick to my computer ( not all day, i'm not crazy ) But i just don't feel like quiting my online-games ( Even if people say the game sucks, C&C Renegade is a heck of a fun to play on multiplayer ). Just a pity i just can't connect to that damned NWN ( neverwinter nights).
My point is, i won't go buy myselef a console, when I got a friend of mine that got one.
But I must admit it must feel good to get back to your roots.

Yeehaw. Gamecube does rekindle a long lost love for console gaming. It's the best system that's come out since PSX. At least Nintendo redeemed themselves and the respect of most of their fans with it.

bah i hate you doom, you just wanted metroid prime and you just ran into the store and bought it =P i hate you so much coz of the luck you got......
For me... buying a gamecube even if i stole the games is just not worth it, i earn 50$ each month (i don´t work =P im 15) so a gamecube is like 100 200 us$, in argentina a single us$ = 3,5$ so i need like 300 D= and the games cost a lot, damn a lot ,like 100$ D= i hate this =P

An update from a shattered mind:

Metroid Prime is indeed better than anything you could possibly imagine. The only reason I stopped is because right now I am suffering a severe headache and it hurts to think, so I'm off to the land of IRC where thinking isn't necessary.

    P.S. Resident Evil still sucks.

    why gamecube tho?

maybe one good game on it atm... maybe 2 (damn mario sunshine was kinda fun!!!)

metroid just isnt worth it for me... i already have a ps2 that i love dearly and will lug around with me for ever as a DVD player...

and there is that point to.. a game cube is only for games... and as there arent many games that are worth $100...
ahh well hope u enjoy it.

    And @Bouncy:

Do you live in a country with a game shortage? Because Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, and Eternal Darkness (just to name three) are all WELL worth buying the system for.

I've been wanting to buy a console myself, but I find myself stuck between Xbox and GameCube. While the Xbox is the absolutely most powerful console of them all (plus it has some very noteworthy titles like Splinter Cell and Halo), Nintendo has always been quite good at providing their systems with good games and a nice, affordable line of accessories. And now that I already have a stationary DVD player, one of the more important reasons for buying Xbox instead of GameCube just sort of fell to the ground.

But what the heck, I still got a PSX and a Sega Master System

Well MiNUS, remember that Splinter Cell is coming to PC in probably Feburary, and some people still seem to think that Halo is coming sometime too. :P And the control for both titles will be far far superior on a keyboard + mouse than they will be on a gamepad.

In my opinion X-Box, just doesn't have that many good games. I mean my friend got one, and we were trying to find things to rent, and out of all the games on the shelf, the only ones that are any good are MGS2 Substance, Splinter Cell, and MK5 (which is on all 3 platforms anyway).

When the 'Cube starts sparking from Samus and Co., go get yerself Star Wars: Rouge Leader. And I also hear Bounty Hunter isn't terrible.

Whenever one of those "next gen" consoles starts to look good to me, I just remember that in 2 years, it'll be obsolete, like all those N64s my friends have. But my computer, now that thing will last till the end of time.

I got a gamecube and metroid prime not too long ago. The allure of Metroid finally broke me, and it' s great, frustrating at times, but great.

Since we have sorta rekindled the pc/console war for a second here, let me say this. I am a *gamer*. I play games. If it's a good game, I will play it. I don't care what system it is on. You see the problem with comparing the pc to consoles is I see them as to completely different animals. They both have their areas where they shine. With the console it's with your platform games (Super Mario and the like), 3rd person stuff like MGS, sports games, fighting games and the occasional FPS (even while playing Metroid Prime, I find myself wish for my keyboard and mouse!). On your PC you have your Stragety games, your FPSes and now your MMORPGs. They each have their specific types of games, and only every once in a while will a port of one to the other will do well.

The biggest problem I see now is trying to get a gaming platform to do something that it isn't any good at.

Oh, BTW how will they keep people from using the GameShark when playing online? How does that work anyways? =)

Don't forget super smash bros. melee and the new zelda! god i can't wait to get my hands on that....

Just got a new job now, i'm going to save like $20 each week till i can get a gamecube+mario sunshine+smash bros.+controlers then i'm gonna buy it all off Ebay where everything is cheap!

I've never liked the games for PS, some of my favorite games of all time are on N64. There's Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocerina of Time (my GOD i loved that game), and of course Goldeneye! And don't forget the original Smash Bros. (best multiplayer console, EVAR!).

Oh oh! and allt he sonic games for genisis were great too, that was my first system (after atari 2600! hehe).

i'd suggest gamecube only because any good games on xbox will be comming to PC (eventuatlly) because they are already coded in directX (as is my understanding) so all you have to do is tweak the controls/update graphics/add internet multiplayer and you have a ported game!

Halo isn't comming for so long because it's the flagship of the Xbox and if it was on PC then there would be one less reason to buy one, but they can't keep the individual developers from porting to PC, like with GTA3.

I got my gamecube for the RE series and Metroid, I was also told that there was a Mario Kart game coming out for it some day and I couldn't resist, I loved Mario Kart 64 so much, it was like crack cocain for me. I also like the controller alot more than the Xbox controller which i think is too bulky and the PS2 controller which was simply a PS controller. Also the GC is the fastest loading console and I have found the graphics of all 3 systems to be identical. I mainly got a GC because my PC is outdated and is too expensive to upgrade.

You'd have to pick up a VGA box.

/me steals from the nstc-uk.com FAQ:

Q22. What if I want to connect my console to a monitor?

Then things get slightly easier. You will need a VGA box which can be purchased for most modern consoles from £20 to £50. There are no conflicting standards.

Q23. Great! What will the quality be like?

That depends. The Dreamcast can output VGA (the signal used by PC monitors) using a dedicated DC VGA box and gives a superb image using a monitor, even better than RGB on a telly. However, consoles such as the PS2 cannot out put VGA and the boxes use a conversion process. The result is usually less than spectacular and far worse than RGB.

Some clever clogs have recently released cables that produce a pure VGA signal for the X Box and Gamecube. It only works with games that support progressive scan (see later), on the X-Box this is most titles, on the Gamecube about half (Super Monkey Ball and Resident Evil are two that do not).

And another thing, to all of you currently enjoying Metroid Prime. I hate you. I have to wait until March ... yes March ... for the PAL release or import.
