Okay since Natural Selection doesn't have any left-handed weaponmodels, I thought that it would be a nice idea for NS²

I'm using the lefty2k pack by Delarosa for nearly 4 years now and it works out fine for me. The devs have promised a grade of certain selectable customization for NS² and I think that such a thing counts as customization <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

If it's too complicated to code that, please simply mirror the weapons. I think that could do too.
I'm lefthanded myself and I really prefer to have my weapons in the left hand when I play first person shooter games. Does anybody else want this too? Sometimes there are also right handed people who actually want to have their weapon on the left side because they're used to it from Counter-Strike or Unreal Tournament.

So yeah, that's everything I wanted to say =)
Anybody else want this too?

-edit-
could somebody please add the dash to the thread headline (left-handed not lefthanded) please? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> thanks

    A mirrored version that survives a consistency check should be fairly easy to implement.

    Yeah but for what purpose...

    If this was a case of a pistol in one hand and a grenade in the other, I suppose you could have a condition where the LMB controls one weapon, and the RMB controls the other. If this is not the case it's just adding more work for the studio.

    he's not talking about dual weapons at all, he's talking about an option for the marine to hold his weapons in the left hand, instead of the right - not both at the same time.

    being left handed i think it makes the game less immersive if my character is holding his weapons in the right hand. eventually you get used to it, but thats beside the point. there should be a customizable option to select which hand you want your character to hold the weapon in. most games have it, sure NS1 was a mod so it can be excused, but NS2 will be retail, they would be silly not to include this option.

    and yes it should be as easy as mirroring the animation for the left side of the screen. it would be even cooler if it mirrored the player model as well, so anyone ingame can see that my marine is holding his gun in the left hand - it would create slight visual differences in a marine squad, so they dont all look like identical clones...

    Surely that'll make them happy?

    Nah. It's the future. We've eliminated left-handed people through eugenics/genetic engineering/mental conditioning etc.

    (but i say, yeah, go for it. my friend [who is left-handed when writing] uses left-handed gun mode in CSS)
  • HeskeyHeskey Join Date: 2005-07-31 Member: 57246Members
    Also, for the cinics out there;

    It's not just "Oh so what; the mouse you're using is left-handed; does it really matter the gun is on the right?"

    Well... yeah... Your hand is on one side of the screen, and the thing your supposed 'hand' is 'using' is on the other side of the screen. It's a bit disorientating.

    A bit like trying to fly a plane/chopper with inverted controls.

    Right handers: The mouse is on the right hand side, simulating the gun on screen in your right hand.
    Left handers: the mouse is on the left hand side, simulating the gun on screen in your right hand.

    It's just awkward for them - Not that I think anyone will say "OH WHAT'S THE POINT?!!!!?!!? ITS JUST EXTRA WORK FOR THE MODDERS!!!!" - Not really; just mirror image the gun animations, since bullets come from your head (FoV) to the crosshair; not the gun barrel to the crosshair.

    lol nah. for my friend, he still uses the right-hand mouse, but uses left-handed weapon models, in CS. he finds it easier, and shoots well - the next time i can play cs (i dont have it on this comp anymore), i'm gonna give it a shot, see how it is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    This Mr. is a very senseless statement. Left-handedness isn't a disease. It's just a small percentage of people among the human race who have been born with the tendance to use the left hand as their primary hand.
    And being a left-handed doesn't have to be a problem at all. There are many things where left-handed people have advantages.

    In the world of Sport for example. Fencing, Boxing....you name it. Or while we are talking about guns. A left-handed guy with a rifle or a pistol has more cover when standing on the right side of a doorstep for example than a right-handed.

    Another interesting fact is that left-handed people tend to be smarter than right-handed people. Most of the smart or famous guys back in history or today were or are left-handed.
    Just to name some of them (Politicians,Artists etc.)

    Leonardo DaVinci
    Albert Einstein
    Bill Gates
    Jim Carrey
    Kurt Cobain
    Jimi Hendrix
    Bill Clinton
    George Bush sr. and 4 other former US Presidents in total
    Marshall Mathers
    Morgan Freeman
    Mahatma Gandhi
    Julia Roberts
    Diego Maradona
    Keanu Reeves
    Sir Paul McCartney
    Marilyn Monroe
    Pablo Picasso
    Neil Armstrong
    Bruce Willis
    Fidel Castro
    Jessica Parker
    Charlie Chaplin
    Prince Charles

    the list goes on...
    I bet some of you guys never knew that all these people were or are left-handed. The reason is that you don't notice it, exept if you take a closer look.
    And now tell me that those people are those kind of people who should become genetically "enhanced" in the future. I also think that in fact nobody would even care about such things as left-handedness. In fact the phase of "enhancing" lefthanders to righthanders took place a few decades ago and it ended up with destroying the peoples psyche. It's not a desease and nothing that should be treatet as such. These very few people are lucky to be different and are usually more talented than the rest.

    I just wanted you to know that in case you weren't kidding <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    As for the models. I think that maybe if there is some time, real left-handed weaponmodels would be really cool =)

    Seriously though, please don't go on supremacist rants. Both sides of the brain have their benefits.

    That is why I think Harimau should have said in regards to the game sci-fi story:

    "Nah. It's the future. We've eliminated left-handed <b>and right-handed</b> people through eugenics/genetic engineering/mental conditioning etc. <b>They are all ambidextrous!</b>"

    Besides, I think you need to get your facts straight, left-handed people are not 'smarter'. It's often simply an indicator that their right half of the brain is dominant.

    @Canadian Wolverine
    Left-handers use both sides of their brain while the right-handers left half is dominant <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Someone in this topic mentioned how left and right handers play. I think I'm an exeption since I use my right hand for holding the mouse. I can aim better with my right hand. A buddy of mine is left-handed too and he plays with the mouse in his left hand. I think left-handers tend to develop their own "style" of choosing how to do things <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Mind if I have some sources for that assertion? From what I have read, left / right hemisphere dominance in the brains determines which is the preferred hand tasks of a particular finesse but everyone uses both sides of their brain.

    I simply think anyone's assertions of superiority is pure hog wash. Its not just about what God gives us but how we choose to use it. Next thing you'll be telling me one person's genetics are superior to another's, thus we should only expect things from particular types of people. Go sell your superiority complex else where, I have enough confidence for both hemispheres. Your assertions infuriate me because any kind of assertions of superiority display an innate need to treat others as inferior - that sounds like "leet" speak to me, thus someone is the "nub" to be used as bait and otherwise verbally abused for displaying less than exemplary skills and knowledge. Instead, I prescribe to the "team work" methodology, everyone brings something to the table - we work together: either pull each down and sink together or adapt, support, and swim together.

    By that, I would want any handed person to feel comfortable playing, so your game suggestion is welcome but other notions put forward I find contrary to what I have found the Natural Selection game to stand for in game play.

    looks like you got this wrong AGAIN...

    I just said that the right handers left side of the brain is DOMINANT. I didn't say that they don't use their left side at all. Please read more carefully.

    Left-handers use both sides equally. It has nothing to do with "superiority complexes" as you call it.
    I read a book about it by Rik Smith.
    <img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4175YBYGB2L._SS500_.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    I see that you got me completely wrong and thus you wrote more inapropriate things because you were enraged. It was never my intention to say that right-handers are stupid or whatever. I just wanted to show the other guys that left-handedness is not a disease because for a long period of time it was treatet as such.

    I hope that you've got my point now, if not I don't know what to say either.

    <b>In general:</b>
    Right-handers' left-side of the brain is dominant.
    Left-handers' right-side of the brain is dominant. <i>(not both sides equally)</i>
    <i>And it's really quite simple isn't it?</i>

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralization_of_brain_function" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralizatio..._brain_function</a>
    <b>Handedness and language</b>
    In left-handed people, the incidence of left-hemisphere language dominance is 73% [7] or 61%[2], depending on the studies.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness</a>
    <b>Brain hemisphere division of labor</b>
    This is the most commonly accepted theory of handedness. The premise of this theory is that since both speaking and handy-work require fine motor skills, having one hemisphere of the brain do both would be more efficient than having it divided up. Also, if all functions were carried out in both hemispheres, the size of the brain and its energy consumption would increase, which is not affordable. Since in most people, the left side of the brain controls speaking, right-handedness would prevail. It also predicts that left-handed people would have a <i>reversed brain division of labor.</i><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Also of note:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness</a>
    <i>Mixed-handedness</i>, also known as cross-dominance, is being able to do different tasks better with different hands. For example, mixed-handed persons might write better with their right hand but throw a ball more efficiently with their left hand. This could also refer to pianists, because different sections of pieces are usually composed to fit the abilities of the different hands, considering that the right hand is usually for melodies and the left-hand, harmonies. However, many writers refer to handedness as <i>the hand that a person uses to write</i>, so Mixed-handedness is often neglected.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    <i>(Important to note this is not the same as ambidexterity.)</i>
    Which seems to match both my friend and Lt.Realness - though perhaps not, holding the mouse in your right hand, while viewing left-handed weapon models, could simply be preference; even though you're both left-handed.

  • HarimauHarimau Join Date: 2007-12-24 Member: 63250Members
    There's no point in having robots that function like humans though.

    And as for the ambidexterity thing, in that case left-handed or right-handed weapons would simply be a preference or something you're more comfortable with. (It might be nice to even see it on the player model.) So why not?

    Left handed weapon model is probably very easy to make, so it might as well be done. Generally, though, i would suggest looking at other popular FPSs and see how they treat it: Is there a left handed weapon option available in Crysis, CoD4, Bioshock, UT3, HL2, etc? - if few or none of them have it, there probably isn't a need for it.

    From gameplay perspective the only difference is what part of the screen is covered up. The gun on the screen is just a cosmetic component - the thing that matters is the cross hair.
    In terms of atmosphere/immersion: having the mouse and weapon be on the same side might help.

    Nah.. it's mostly a matter of preference. Most people prefer right-handed models, and happen to be right-handed, and use a right-hand mouse. Some people might prefer left-handed models. Some people will be left-handed. Some people may use left-handed mice. Your preference is not necessarily tied to your right-hand/left-hand dominance.
    It's also a matter of 'how you were brought up'. Most people, even many (just to be certain, many=/=most) left-handed people still use right-handed mice, since that's how they learned to use the computer; many people, left-handed or not, play with right-handed weapon models, since that was the default, and the way they learned to play the game.

    But if we're talking art-wise, I think it'd be nice to see a player carry a gun on their left-side, on their player model, if they're using left-handed weaponry; perhaps also in first-person spectator-mode (and vice versa - right-handed models on left-handed model screens will still be right-handed - i found it slightly odd in CS spectating myself on my friend's screen, where it appears I'm using left-handed weapon models) though this isn't really that important.

    I'll take your word, that were enough good studies that found significant difference in intellectual ability between left-handed and right-handed people. Still, I remain skeptical, because i don't see why that would be true. I'm sure left-handedness does not CAUSE that difference. Your second statement is wrong, since, as you mention, there are 9 times as many right handed people than left handed; though you probably just wrote it incorrectly.

    Don't confuse handedness and dominant brain hemispheres - these don't necessarily correspond. Control of hand movements is part of the motor cortex and the cerebellum, while reasoning is in the frontal lobe. These are completely different brain areas and their development doesn't depend on each other. Furthermore, there have been studies that did not find this correlation.
    Finally, the brain is so flexible, that it can adjust for losing <a href="http://www.nbc10.com/health/4563166/detail.html" target="_blank">HALF a brain</a>! There does seem something special about movements of hands though. Interestingly, the girl finished High School with honors, can walk, and yet she can't use her left hand. There are other cases as well...
    Now that i've gone completely off topic...
    I want left-handed models for ALIENS!!!
