Last night I was playing aliens and as a lerk I was supporting a few fades on caged. I step through the air lock on the north side of the map with them. No lasers were seen.
Then I hear over the voice comm from the fade next to me... "Rolling Rock, watch out for the mine."
I reply "What m--BOOM"
Some sneaky **obscenity** placed the mind on the ground. And you'd think that as a lerk I'd see it. Nope. I was looking for lasers. I was looking far into the distance.
Now maybe I was just blind, afterall, the fade next to me saw it....but still, it was effective.
I've placed mines on the ground at the base of resource towers. The graphic of the resource tower can often hide most of the mine. I've only gotten to do it once, but I managed to get ahold of a set of mines off a fallen marine, and I placed 4 of them around a nearby resource tower, trying to hide them in the graphic of the tower as much as possible. Sure enough, about 5-10 minutes later, I got a mine kill on some unfortunate skulk.
I think a good strategy for the early game would be to capture a few resource nodes, and DONT put turrets up, but have a marine place 4 mines around each one, hiding them in the tower graphic like I did. A skulk is sure to find it sooner or later and chomp away, but it won't be the first skulk that kills it....
Then again, I'm of the mind that resources shouldn't be wasted on turrets at every resource node, and instead save those resources for heavy mg and ha sooner. But a few mines as protection, hiding in the node itself, couldn't hurt.
They're cheap, and they do work....it's just a shame I'll go DAYS without seeing them employed.
The last game I played, there were mines in every vent. After the first five minutes, literally any boostable or normally accessible vent was filled with mines. Exploding while thinking evil thoughts is not very fun.
Mines are so very useful when placed on the ground without the lasers, I look for lasers quite often but find myself blindsided sometimes by floor mines. A nasty surprise to say the least. By the end of the game, I believe I have suffered more grief in that game than from last week when my team lost approximately five Hives in one game.
However, as a Marine I promote trapping vents, spectacular results and angry aliens ensue. I'll always vouch for mines, but its a tough choice between Mines and Welders.
Ok Todays NEW Stragety for fighting Skulks when you have some free mines
Drop two mines at your feet in line as the skulk apporches then toe the line, if the Skulk gets to close he's going with you, however if you pretend thats you saftey wall(Keep it between the Skulk and you at all times)
Quite funny as I was able to take an ENTIRE six Skulk Rush with a pair of mines on Eclipse by doing this tatic and then hoping for a noob to still try and rush jump me, the Other skulks tried to go around the mines and get me but just as they did, he goes noob strait line Rush, chomp chomp... KABOOM! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
By the time they had all respawned and rushs agian the corridors where mined with 80 RP worth of mines and they had no chance until they got Fades which was rather a long time as we rushed the "wrong hive" apprently and found three Gourges all briming with resources and promtly guned them down
Bump to make this sticky, Oh and now for todays mine Tatic
When you have a good mic set-up along with a marine at someplace you want to build earily in the game, Have him drop a pair of mines under every building you want build(Drop mines then building) this also prevents buildings from sinking sometimes and has the added benfit of anything that Goes Melee with you buildings is blow to bits as Lurks/Skulks and ususaly Fades do to kill your structers, better yet mines don't hurt your buildings so your in the clear as far as damage to your buildings go
Excellent way to defend Turret Factorys earily on along with resource points
This is a little something somebody told me yesterday, but I've yet to see it tested.
Exploding mines do not blow up other mines. What really happens is that if a mine's laser is interfered with by an explosion then that mine blows up too.
Therefore landmines will never blow up in a chain reaction, and two mines on a pillar facing opposite directions might not blow up either (depending on if the mine blast was programmed to be centred on the mine or not, ie can the explosion sprite reach through walls?)
If you place mines on opposite ends of corridors facing each other, blowing one will blow the other.
Mr Bean, if you would be so kind as to test these theories out? You seem to have a knack for it.
Might make for some interesting alterations to mine laying strategies (ie placing a preference on land mines rather than trip mines...)
Question: If i manage to place a mine on the ceiling pointing down, does it have a laser trip? I have never tried it, and was just wondering if it did.

ME! I love using mines, yesterday, I caught 2 onos' and a skulk when they tried to rush our base. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo-->
Someone up above suggested that only fades can set off mines and not worry about damage. This is almost true.
A gorge can take out a mine with it's acid spit (and with babblers, if you are employing mines that late.) If the sprite for the spit passes through the laser, the mine will detonate. This effect is somewhat unpredicatable, and doesn't always work. (Requiring the gorge to try again from a different angle.)
An effective way to fight off the marines who are chasing you down.
Sticky Sticky, so long as you keep adding new and unconventional tactics. I love mines, but the majority of Comms dont know either A. how to make em, or B. how efffective they can be, with the BAREST base you can hold it with mines, and maybe 1 guy left behind. skulks will be dettered by a mine, untill one decides to clear the way, and if placed correctly you will need 2 skulks to set em off, thus reducing the oncimng assault, and if your 'rine on guard is not a daft bugger, he goes and puts more down soon after assault (or if they wait for their friends) soon as mines have been cleared. thus leaving you with more resources to build up more resource towers and take and secure a hive ASAP.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Only when you attack them and make them explode do they kill each other because for some reason the game counts the mine as your weapon and explodes them all. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> What verison of the server where you playing on? How far apart where they spread? Time and time agian I've gotten kills on Onos latley thanks to my patent pending 1 Trip 4 Floor method(2000k points of damage this way) and ALWASY the Trip sets off the Floor, even when I put it at eye level and the onos jumped the floor mines
If this is some new change I have not heard of simply stack mines right next to each other its possible, you can place mines half in each other so the lasers are inchs apart, if one trips the other trips
i have a question tht i would like you to answer why are you playsing the mines on walls?
1) to skare the enemy? they can see the mines and find a way to destroy them
2)why dont you place them on the ground? the enemy wont notise them and will step on them not to say he will step on more than one before realises what is hiting him?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

In the old Days,(If its changed) You use ONE Trip mine at roughly waist level as your "Trigger" it does alittle damage, the real vaule comes in the fact it sets of the 2-4 you set on the floor
With the M mine is the trigger, A fast fly Lurk will die to this if it touchs the trip mine lasers and set's of the floor mines
Floor mines can be jumped over, however that Trip can NOT so if you hit the trip you set of the floor mines, even if you jump, 4 mines + that one trip will kill an onos even caprenced
I tried out your tactis for mine placement today but changed them a little bit.
I had another marine boost me up the wall and placed a mine relatively high up in an easy to see spot. I then placed four mines on the floor. Then I'd stand at the other end of the corridor with a HMG and fire off a few rounds at any enemy that wandered by. As soon as they noticed me I'd high tail it out of there.
Good people keep thinking! Mine Traps for Fades/Onos are the Funnist, and I was to slow today I got a four Skulk + Gourge Mine kill, 3 on the gourge and lep up and down in enemy hive with knife out
They changed
I jumped
They expolded
So did I(Woops should have staided back)
People start to be thinking more OFFENSIVLY with mines
