Mine Planting

<div class="IPBDescription">For those that know not how(Pic Heavy)</div> How to Plant Mines.... Most people never even see the little Buggers as Commanders have no idea how vauable they are in base defense

First the Basics...

What a Mine Doorway SHOULD look like
<img src='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/doorway.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/doorway.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/doorway.jpg</a>
Remeber in small spots Alernation positions is very imporant, also try and move the mines so they are not right in a strait line

Despite how good that looks you want a staggered position, bottom furthest out, top Furthest in... Why? Because Lurks and Leaping Skulks will try to jump your mines and when jumping/flying you tend to go up then down, So you want your mines either going down then up or Up then Down to take advatnage of that little thing called Gravity when they try and jump over them

next...
<b>DISTANCE</b>

<img src='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/econlaser.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/econlaser.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/econlaser.jpg</a>
See those Lasers?, See how Far Apart they are? NEVER let you mines get any closer than that or they will set each other off, Plant as many on each collum as you like, but unless you want raging firestorm that sets of fifty mines for triping one... Set them exactly that far back(Roughly three Turret Factorys apart if you want a comparsion)

Also notice at what height those mines are at, The First one, No Skulks/Lurks can get by as they set off the mines, The second Set in the Distance however can be gotten past by a smart lurk

NEXT
<b>Staggering</b>

Observer here
<img src='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/falsesenselaser.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/falsesenselaser.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/falsesenselaser.jpg</a>
As you can see I've stagered the Lasers here so there is an extra trip a little ways past the first line

Why? Because if you have Lurks with Celenity they can outrun most of your mine setups, So you set a 3rd Mine roughly the distance of your rifle away from the others to catch speedy Lurks and reduce them into tiny Lurk bit ceral mix

Now for some don'ts

<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/fourlaser.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/fourlaser.jpg</a>
DONT set your mines up like that, its wasteful and there is a gap a Lurk can slip through

DONT Set you mines up like this

<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/laser1.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/laser1.jpg</a>

Though yes.... It does look very shiny.....
But if somone so much as Sneezes you loose the entire set

Ok there you go... Question comments?

Contrary to what the manual says, placing tripmines on the ground does not cause them to activate when a fellow marine steps on them.

Placing them on the ground has the added benefit of having no red laser, and anything that trips them will be right on top of them. So along with the configurations you see in this helpful post, remember to place one or two mines on the ground as backups incase a skulk trips one.

Since most aliens don't take enhanced sight, you can place mines on the floor in dark corners around key positions to prevent aliens from taking up nest there.

Good basic mining tutorial Bean. I find that generally mines are highly underutilized in most games, if they're used at all. Too much reliance on turrets seems to have made people forget how cheap mines are, and how much of a bang you get out of them...

Its a damn shame as well considering I've met some insanly good commanders who were rolling right over everything and when I asked for mines he asked if we had to resurch em(He knew about shotguns but never had been asked for mines or used them.... he could keep me alive VS three skulks with Ammo and heath plus while I was playing decoy have two marines "I" never even noticed building seiges above me but he had no idea about mines)

    Oh and
Additon, I found a good role of thumb for mine planting, Look for where a fellow Marines head is, the Mine should be planted so its bottom "feet" are just about touching the marines head and the bottom mine should have its lasers bisecting his knees

Or a better judge is a HA, The Laser should go through the tops of his shoes and the Laser should just skim the top of his head

This should be sticky if marines ever want to win on pubs again. Turrets are too expensive, proper mine placement is the only way to balance the need for a speedy hive rush with an effective equipment defense. You have to get at least one resource on your way to the hive. It's inevitable, there are exceptions but aren't there always. Anyone who thinks that they are going to be able to create a proper encampment at the captured hive after turreting up the resource nodes your crazy.
We are talking the first 5 mins here. If you do not get the hive ASAP you are dead. Believe me I am an alien player, strictly skulk/lerk, I have not seen aliens lose for 4 days. Why? Cause marines take no risks and end up having to seige their way out of their spawn. Note to commander if you ever have to seige your way out of the spawn then start over you have lost. Or do something drastic like jetpack and set up a new base.
The average commander cannot place secure turret factories anyway. No matter how many turrets are up the factory always has that little chunk you can get at. As a skulk my diet consists of turret factories and sweaty marines. You are just wasting resources without a phasegate/marine presence in the area. Period. There is no turret factory that is secure by itself. Unless you get ridiculous.

Another useful tip for mines is to try to place them where the laser does not extend much further than the blast radius. I've seen people place them so that the laser extends the length of a corridor.

Any passing skulk can then safely destroy the mine by tripping it from the other end of the corridor. If you're trying to cover large area setting them on the ground as landmines is probably a better idea, otherwise e.g. a Fade could walk through the middle of the room and trip all your wall-mines without taking any damage at all.

And a question : if an alien triggers a mine and a marine (or marine equipment) is caught in the blast radius does the marine take damage?

I know for certain that exploded mines can hurt marines, because I've died to them before. Maybe it only happens when the mine is blown up by an acid rocket/gorge spit? Its been my experience that exploding mines hurt EVERYTHING in their radius, but my experience is very limited, and I'll defer to the other posts I've seen about them in the forum.

The only thing I've read conflicting reports about is if they blow each other up when they detonate. I thought they did, but most here on the forum are suggesting that they dont... I think I'll just have to test that myself to figure it out.

Mine Damage does not hurt Buildings,

To Demosrate I present the Following Picture of mining the CC on Eclipse

Of course, with all those mines around your CC, doesn't that mean that it only takes one Skulk to clear them out?

Try and pay attention those last two pics where a simple demosration that no mines DONT hurt buildings, Even when there is a whole lot of em <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Notice the ones on the back wall I used those a triggers as when they went off the rest did to(And since Mine Lasers go through buildings it means I'm in a prime spot to take a Screeny after denotating the mines)

I think you missed his point, Mr. Bean. If all those mines will be detonated from one Skulk, a smart alien pair would suicide one, allowing the other free reign on the CC.
  • Canadianmonk3yCanadianmonk3y Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8465Members
The reason I do not like mines at all is their uselessness.
They cant even kill running skulks that keep a bit away from the blast.
The blast is triggered too late for the skulk to die, unless the blast triggers a mine further ahead, which would catch the skulk.
But then you have just wasted resources placing mines to kill skulks, which cost 0 (ZERO) resources. See a waste? Yeah.

I think the most useful aspect of mines is the deterrance factor. The less aggressive alien players will tend to skirt mined areas and look for an alternate route. By the way, mines can be used to great effectiveness <b>inside</b> vents. Give a Marine a jetpack and some mines, the result is fairly impressive against the smaller alien types.

    You missed mine

I'm say thats an idoitc method of planting mines, fokes please read my posts, I took those two pics to demosrate that Mines don't damage buildings NOT that they are good in that formation

You note I put some on the backwall, meaning I could trip it from 50 Meters away and still be alive to take screenys of the Still undamage CC as a previous poster asked if Mines damage buildings

<b>Pleae fokes PLEASE read my posts in thier entirty before posting</b>

My personal joy as a Skulk came from hiding right outside a mined door, waiting for some marnes to pass through, then throwing myself into the beams while they're standing in the doorway. Wound up with a dead skulk just about every time, but took a bunch of them with me. Also discouraged them from putting down any more mines, which, while avoidable by a careful alien, would still have been troublesome in any attack on their base.

Moral: Look before walking through a mined area to make sure that I'm not there waiting for you.
  • Mr_BeanMr_Bean Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7943Members
    Thing is However Kitsune

    What are you doing?

    Not attacking

So what purpose(Aside from boosting your kill score) did you get?

If they are in HA they just weild themsleves or write it off and Spawn and be on thier way long before you get back there

    However I admit that IS a fun-tatic

If he manages to kill 2 or more marines, that's the point right there. I would gladly trade a single Skulk for multiple marines of any type.

However the wait factors in, You must guess the correct Exit, Time it right(You might not)
And hope you get all the marines standing close to the mines(Normaly somthing I never see, Marines treat mines at least with respect and run through them quickly)

    Its all supposition HOWEVER
It did provided the main task

That being Stoping the Aliens from Entering the base, somthing even with this tatic is very effective at doing

Indeed. Properly placed in vents, a Mine is a real pain in the butt for a hopeful Skulk or Lerk harassment unit. Stick it on the floor just around a corner, or on the wall where the laser cuts "forwards" from their point of view. Skulks rush through vents like Chihuahuas on speed - they'll bump into the laser and blow themselves to kibble before they even know it.

    Conclusion - Mines + Vents = Angry Respawning Kharaa <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Also another fun tatic I JUST LEARNED today was the Respawn Mining

    Whats that?

Simple during a Hive rush head towards the Hive and drop as many mines as you can around it

    Why?

If you have at least sixteen mines and a Kharraa Responds the hive and the Kharraa will BOTH get it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

(Edit* going to find a nice pic of this and post it)

Scratch that it does not seem to work unless FF is on which they don't even scratch hives

(Even when I droped 50 Mines right under the Hive and no even one bar off)

    It was pretty though)

Yes, another advocate of the underused and misunderstood features.

Mines are very usful. If you place enuf in the right places, you can take down those damn arrogant Onos that tend to charge right thru then thinking they are invincible. I was on Tanith once and got 3 Onos before they figured out that running thru mines wasn't a good thing.

I was playing a game of Bast yesterday, and the commander kept trying to get turrets up to defend from the skulk rushers.... Eventually, we got an armory down instead, and with a shotgun and 2 packs of mines we secured the room, and I must've taken out 15 skuks with "meh boomschtick."

Shotguns and mines, one of the most underused combos.

Always remember though, that any Fade with some sense is never deterred by mines. It only takes one rocket to set off a mine. This is hilarious, when i cloak, looking at some mines, and detonate them when marines walk by (if it's a chokepoint for us, it usually is for them too). The marines quickly learn not to mines chokepoints.

    Yes Mines VS Fade=Fade

    Everything Else VS Mines=Mine

Remeber that fokes, Only fades can touch Mines...
  • TurtleTurtle Join Date: 2002-10-18 Member: 1540Members
The money you save making a good mine network will allow you to press the attack. If you use that to your advantage, you can have two hives taken before they can evolve to fades.

Mr Bean those mines arent placed correctly around the CC, a skulk could easily get them from the other side of the room, as well as they all being together so they'll all trip at the same time. Not very good mine placement imo, you should read the first post <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ok NEW PICY

After expermination and fiddling with mines for half the day I present the Proper method of mine planting on your avarage doorway
    <img src='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/proper.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
<a href='http://blackadder.freeservers.com/proper.jpg' target='_blank'>http://blackadder.freeservers.com/proper.jpg</a> if you can't see the above image

Ok notice, Eye level and foot level, see where the mines are? Good Skulks/Gourges/Lurks run through those and DIE

The THIRD MINE most imporant the two mines on the Doorway are concidental, they are not the killing mine

The killing mine is Mine 3, Not picture here as you half to learn it, Place it exactly three full steps away from the other mines(Stand in Lasers hit Forward three times place it at your feet) THIS is the 200 Damage mine that kills, I have tested with Fades even, when jumping through the lasers it is the THIRD MINE that kills me if I where not idiot enough to simply shoot them off the walls

Want to kill an Onos? Place another mine one step away from Mine three(Toward the Lasers I mean) and that will kill nearly heathy Onos(Just over 440 Damage on avarage when I tried charging past the trips)

If your going for full onos mate then drop that fith trip right smack dab near trip four(The one two steps back) as that blows up nice and pretty with the other one and you got yourself a fried onos, over 700 damage on avarage, as long as they did not go Caprence they will be good as dead

And if they not, well then put em down for thier own good with your pistol <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
