Different Voices

<div class="IPBDescription">To distinguish between heavy, jetpack, fades, onos</div>I think it would be cool of NS2 had a different voice for each of the aliens classes and style of marine equipment. Other than just sounding cool, it would be an audio cue to help the commander, a HA saying he needs meds would gain the attention of the commander sooner than a light marine saying he needs ammo for example.

The light/vanilla marine to should sound similar as to NS1

heavy armour should sound 1/2 way to dark vader, large and menacing, powerful, deep voice with some effect on it so it sounds like its comming from inside the armour.

jetpack i'd imagine would sound similar to a fighter pilot.

I think accents could play a role too, i could see heavies having a think southern texas accent, where as jetpackers maybe a british one?

The same i think could go for aliens, of course they would all be snarls and growls, but different tones and effects on them, i'd say the onos would have a deep elephant style, while gorge would be something like a pig, lerk more of an eagle sound, fade snake or wolf/lion style, skulks um dunno hah, they could use the ns1 global default.

what do you guys think? how do you see your favourite alien/marine sounding ?

i agree there should be more variation with the voices, especially with the HA, since it's face is covered and would be speaking through some sort of mic. they could probably just have a few different voices to chose from in the menu, and then when you select different suits, the voice is slightly altered electronicially. i'm sure it would be pretty easy for a sound engineer to do. the only down side would be that it would cost more, because you would have to hire additional voice actors and a sound engineer.

i dont agree with the different races/accents for different roles, i dont want anything in the game that refer's to any current nation/race/ethnicity. the game is set well into the future, accents such as those suggested would have evolved so much they wouldnt be recognisable...

I don't see why anyone would be happy with one voice when the possabilities to have many is easily attained. How hard is it to record a voice saying something. ... There, I just said Shazbot outloud. It cost me $0, 2 seconds of my time and was easy for a gamer like myself to do it and sound like I mean it. Hell, writing this post is more difficult! So yeah, no idea why there aren't like 10 or more voices in the game. The females should have like 4-5 as well. One thing about playing UT 3 is there are LOTS of voices, so it doesn't sould like the same boring ass shyte even when Im playing the bots.

Seriously, why wouldn't you have alot of different voices?

Yeah, wouldn't hurt to have few different player voices to choose from Tribes or UT style. I don't agree to people magically changing to different accents when you equip them with Jetpack or whatever. Need other methods to differentiate them. HA is easy, just make him sound more electronically filtered or like he's in an enclosed suit. Jetpack could have some sort of faint idling engine sound on the background, or maybe he's using some sort of hands free comm that makes a sort of blib sound at beginning of each phrase. That'd make him easy to single out.

just my 2 cents, but i really really hate the way UT have done the voices, i guess its part of the over the top style of the game, because the voices are over the top. but i also think they sound really unprofessional, and most of all tthey don't sound like they are comming from your character or even from the game - its like an exteral or background program.
they don't have the right ambience and are too loud etc

I would rather promote HA having voice similar to Goliaths in StarCraft, cause Txas accent will get anoying really soon unless you give them that cool southeren "yeehaw" dukes of hazard style when they blast alien to dust <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Additional voice actors need money.
Recording studio creation/hire/loan needs money. No, you can't get such crisp voice over a mic from home easily.
Voice variation < Making the actual game.

I think Kissamies has a good solution:

Since there is a female marine model, 2 voice actors will need to be hired just for marines anyway. They could probably afford to spend a little extra and record more lines. Since they'll need a sound mixer to make the alien sounds anyway, s/he could add the sound effects to HA and JP as well.
Great idea, schkorpio, it's certainly something that Charlie and Max should consider.

I doubt there would be much cost to the development of NS to have more than one voice. I don't know this but I would put money on the current voices being from the NS development team and not a actor. I'm certain that the unknown worlds team knows females would would be willing to do the voices. Hell the communtiy could do this and supply the voice clips for NS2. I'm certain a few of you have ninja mics or know people with home recording studios (I do). So lets make a list of ###### we want said and then let the team pick from the best sound bites.

    Current list:
    Everything from NS1
    At hive commander
    At resourse node com.

    Get recording guys AND gals.

Is that how they are going to get the voices into the game for NS2?

this is almost defo out of the question but i thought id suggest it anyway.

would it be possible to put a filter over voice mic conversation in game. so if ur normal rine ur voice sounds normal. if ur in a heavy suit when u speak in to ur mic it gets an electronic effect on it in game and sounds different. i imagine this would demand a lot of realtime processing power so it wouldnt be possible but i wud sound cool.

Nice Idead but the mic quality of some players is horrible so it could mean that you go from bearly audable to not understanding a word.
