cheers buggy. i ended up buying it yesterday as i saw it on sale at Tesco for £29 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

mp is very smooth, runs well on my low spec system (i can't beleive maps load up in less than 5 seconds). only problem at the moment is the auth server taking ~ 20s to check my cd key, had to google the problem to extend the connection attempt from 11s to 20s. hopefully that's just a teething problem.

as for weapon balance- there is one gun that looks bbqimba. i think it's the g36. when i spec players who frag with me with it they just hold the trigger down and full auto me from range with no recoil.

as for perks i've just unlocked the UAV jammer and i'm pretty sure i'll use that for every class. the pros who are already level 50 just shoot you through walls when someone calls in a UAV.

the netcode seems solid, although high pingers always warp and the sniper rifles seems to be similar to BF2 in that no-one is sure whether you have to compensate for distance.

i've not played COD games before, but the basic gameplay is incredibly simple and well polished. my K:D ratio is about 1.8 so i'm not getting drowning as i would be if i started a game like NS now.

i just need to figure out the best server size for me. i played on a few 10v10s and it's no problem frame-rate-wise but it's a bit chaotic if you play non-deathmatch modes.

maps have huge attention to detail, but it's gonna take me a while to remember all the city maps as they are all set in the middle east. only map i hate is the silo one, it's just one large area with lots of random crap in the middle that's very messy.

The MP is fun, but moreso its addictive. The constant rewards((My first round I got to level 4. Every round after that til 7 I went up a level, now its taking several rounds to go just the next level)) and challenge bonuses in XP(aka once you finish doing certain neat goals- your first 25 kills with most weapons completes the first level of the challenge, and then its 75 total for the second level and 150 for the 3rd) give mods to guns/more XP, so generally every few rounds you get a reward for just playing(as you can get XP whether you're on the winning team or not).

I thought BF2's was too slow(and thusly I didn't care to play it purely to see what my next upgrade would be), but these are so frequent its insane.

Also, as a note: The level system goes to 55, which takes quite a while. BUT, there is a neat bonus!

See, if you get to 55, you can then start your Prestige levels. Prestige levels basically add an extra star to your name, and are there just for you to say "I've gone through the ######". Prestige mode puts you back at level 1, and has you start leveling again. Upon hitting 55 again you can go ANOTHER Prestige level, over and over(erasing ALL the bonuses you get from leveling) until you're at Prestige level 5, have everything in the game and etc. Challenges DO NOT reset at this time.

All in all, fun. Whats the total number of MP maps, though? I've only seen 6 or 7.

Yeah, i've heard things about this g3 thing as well, think it'll be fun once I unlock it, i'm pretty close now. I think the rifle grenade launcher attachment is pretty funny. Everyone basically thinks it's a noob kind of weapon because it's very powerful and easy to use. This incites massive lulz when you kill some guy with a grenade over and over again. My favorite rages so far have been "nice noob tube skillz" and a german version of "FFS CAN YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE?" followed by a disconnect. By the way, it seems all the perks and grenades and stuff isn't going down well with the veteran cod2 players, they feel their game got dumbed down.

I think servers with ~16 slots are best, feels just right kind of. I also spend most of my time playing TDM so far just to get used to things and because you dont have guys spawning 5 metres behind you like in DM, so it's a pretty fun and oldschool experience.

As for maps, I like most of them, but as you said the one with the tall grass and such are just really bad. My favorite is the one thats 80% indoor in corridors and stuff. Most middle-east maps are alright too. There's also a really bad map which is a square with 4 containers.

    After playing some more...

Wow, I'm really getting into this. They fixed my only real balance complaint from the beta(machine guns being too powerful- not only were they mostly one shot kill weapons, but they were sniper-rifle accurate) has been nixed, and otherwise nearly everything is perfect. Everyone and their sister uses Martyrdom(when you die they drop a nade), which I find really funny 'cause I've been 10x as effective with Last Stand(which sits you on the ground and you have 20-30 seconds[or til shot again] to kick ass with a pistol), completely decimating entire teams with my pistol afterwards 'cause they didn't notice the guy on his back shootin' the hell out of 'em.

Weapons wise, the ones I thought needed work got it(M4 previously had SERIOUS close range hip accuracy issues, those are mostly gone but it still isn't good, which is perfect balance wise), the ones I thought were perfect are still perfect or better(the M16 I thought was fine, but they made it a little less long-range and a little more hip-fireable), and they finally made Sniper Rifles WORTH something(before, having one was useless 'cause nearly any weapon could fire accurately across a map).

The perks I don't think dumb anything down, but then again, CoD2's MP was a dumbed-down CoD1(seriously, all the weapons were the ######ing same), and in general, this feels really tight to me. The package feels very complete. Then again, I'm playing on 360(I played CoD1/2 on PC).

I also REALLY like one of the new game modes- Headquarters. Basically, an area turns into the HQ on the map. Both teams go get it. One team captures. From that point on, that team doesn't respawn anymore, until the other team destroys that HQ, which then moves it on to the next HQ position, and it starts again(not the round, just everyone going to capture). The no-respawning of the 'winning' team automatically balances out any real team issues and it turns into a situation where people aren't-quite going to suicide just to cap the position, but they'll really chance it.

My only real complaint now is that I feel like if I ever reach a point where I'm NOT being constantly rewarded, that I'll get really bored. Nearly every game I'm leveling up or completing a challenge. The rewards are so addictive it was hard to pull away from the 360.

Once again, if anyone's lookin' for some fun, my Live name is Quaunaut, just send a message with it saying you're from the NS forums.

Hmm..game sounds fun'ish. Maybe I'll get it for the Ps3....After I get bored (if so) with Warhawk which is 50x > than Halo 3. lol
    (imo)

It doesn't look like a ET:QW which is already a plus, I wish I could get my money back for that game. -.-
Stupid bugs where my sound just suddenly cuts out.

agreed! if nothing else, on maps like silo if it's 15v15 when the sides storm each other it's just a mess of grenades!

i have to be honest- i <b>hate</b> getting fragged by the grenade launcher, it's like a railgun/AWP but doesn't need good aim. also, you can frag people with it if you hit them directly, so if you spot an enemy at a range short enough to prevent the grenade from exploding you can still frag. if i equip the GL i just turn it on at as soon as i spawn; for a 1-hit kill weapon there aren't any situations where it's a disadvantage to use it.

just got laser dot on the m4, m16 and mp5, yay. iron sights + muzzleflash takes up a huge chunk of the center screen!!

FYI: I've found that the auto balance favors those playing with the same clan tag. Since you can change it on the fly, I suggest you and your friends throw in the same tag while your playing so you can stick together.

I am a major threadomancer lately.

I wasn't too impressed by the demo but I caved in and got the full game, and I must say I really enjoyed the single player. there were some parts that sagged, but for the most part, they really kept up the variety, and the game kept moving along with some really interesting sequences. some of my favorites:

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'><ul><li>The bit where you're nuking guys from the plane. that was crazy. </li><li>I liked some of the unexpected bits - the part where Paul Jackson dies after the nuclear explosion was really grim and visceral.</li><li>the stealth/ghillie suit level was neat. it was one of the more immersive bits of the game.</li><li>some really cool touches after you finish the game, like the epilogue level on the plane, and the cheats. Ragtime mode is hilarious.</li></ul></span>

I think the first problem you have with the demo is the difficulty setting, Tycho. Quit playing it on the spank-you-immediately setting and lower your epeen a bit to play it on something that's actually tolerable. I never had any problems with the demo and I thought it kicked a lot of ass, as does the entire campaign. It's an amazing game and I'd recommend it to anyone that loves epicness.

I tried that. Still sucked. Nothing can ever fix the ridiculousness of silencing ONE AA gun in the entire freaking city just to call in a Cobra helicopter to deal with A FEW TWO BY FOURS NAILED ACROSS A WINDOW.

Yeah to be honest, that part was a little ridiculous. That whole section was kind of ridiculous how 'attached' the campaign was to one single tank you just HAD to fix and just HAD to defend. Oh Em Gee the war will be over if we lose this tank, protect it with your bodies!

The rest of the game was pretty awesome though, especially the bit on the tanker when you're running for your life <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

It's not a realistic war simulator is it, though? I mean- if you take a bullet between the eyes you just duck behind a wall and wait for five seconds and hey presto- good as new.

The game is fantastic and does what it set out to do.

Well, I just started playing this morning and I am enjoying a good bit.

Only got so far as the first marine mission (as I had to go to work), but what I have seen so far (CQC, Sniping, etc etc) has been really fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I never said it was a realistic war simulator. I said I felt retarded calling in 2 Cobra attack helicopters to nail people behind 2x4s when one of the big complaints in multiplayer is that your bullets can basically go through concrete. I know what realism is and I know what Call of Duty is, and neither CoD nor CoD 2 ever made me do something so patently stupid and ridiculous. It completely broke any sense of immersion or involvement when I realized the only reason I couldn't shoot those people was because the developers wanted to show off the helicopter model they made.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
my first reaction was that as well, but really, they were just going for a cool, epic, action movie feel to the sequence I think, even if it would have been unnecessary or impractical IRL. it's true that it doesn't make much sense that you gun down hundreds of guys, but when a few are holed up in a building, you have to call in a heli for backup... but that didn't make it much less cool when it happens =p it's like how nothing really explodes IRL like it does in an action movie, which is why action movie explosions are usually cooler than RL ones =p

Quit ruining stuff and go "COOL" like they want you to. xD

I thought the helos coming in just for a house was kind of stupid, but the tank bit could have fooled me. Our military goes on extensive rescue missions all the time in which we often come out in the 'negatives' for casualties.

edit: The rest of the missions are pretty solid. I like them. You have to expect the over-the-top from this campaign, because thats what it aims for.

Cool and epic is when you call in a helicopter to blow apart an entire building full of enemies or take out a tank convoy. Cool and epic is NOT killing an AA gun so that a Cobra can kill 2 people for you. I have seen cool and epic, thank you very much, and CoD4 was not cool and epic. It was retarded.

Edit: And I had no problem with the whole tank rescue thing. That's a perfectly legitimate objective if it's not designed by people with sponges for brains.

Touche' boy. I'd recommend renting it for a 360/PS3 instead of buying it if you had a console, but I'm not sure that you do. Just sit down for an afternoon and game through the single player.

I could just borrow it from a friend. I'm so pressed for time though that I'd rather spend it playing Company of Heroes or Team Fortress 2 or something instead of bothering with CoD 4.

Vis a vis the quote, I agree with Thansal. Ergo, I concordantly and indubitably concur forthwith.

I thought they made a point of having the enemies be generic Arabs and not Muslims. Then again all I ever played was the demo.

    beat the game Saturday morning.

    EVERYONE is a stereotype.

All the Russians are shifty. (even the good ones)
    The American's are xenophobic hicks.
    The Aussies are Real Men.
The Arabs are are all Terrorists.

    etc etc

It was fun, I liked it.

The mappers need to learn how to NOT rely on invisible walls of doom. Seriously, the number of times I have gone "AH HA! I can sneak up around behind them and shank them all!" only to run into Hard Air is kinda annoying.

However that was my only complaint.

I honestly really liked the game. It was fun, it was cinematic. I never played the demo so I honestly don't know what part you are talking about (The only time you take out an AA gun it is the only one around, and when the chopper shows up it lays waste to HORDES of baddies...)

I am enjoying the multiplayer. The RPG aspect of it has be (unsurprisingly) hooked.

I find people's lack of use of the voice com to be disturbing.

It's the part right after you get to the immobilized tank and protect it from all the people who have RPGs but don't use them, in the Middle East. It's at night.

Played some single player round a mate's house...

They really are going for the whole "war sucks" angle aren't they? What with the whole <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>stumbling blindly around a nuked street probably in intense amounts of pain, staggering through a ruined playground then dropping down dead from radiation poisoning.</span> not to mention <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>seeing the president's execution in first-person</span>, the whole way through that part I was thinking that it was just a random marine I was watching, and that convenient rescue at the hands of delta force or similar was surely only moments away. Nope, just gunfire for you i'm afraid.

    Very cinematic all-round.

hate the single player campaign - its like a 2.5 star movie but i have to move my hands or i have to watch the same parts over and over lol.

but as for a 4-8 person LAN its loads of fun. Online is not so good though - easily beaten by games with proper squads and medics
