<div class="IPBDescription">Play this game.</div>To describe this game in one word: Intense. I feel like Infinity set an extremely high bar with this title, and it's going to be near impossible for another game to achieve the amount of Epic this game delivers. If you haven't played it you are doing yourself, your country, your parents, and your friends wrong.

I give the campaign a 9.7/10, only because it was short and I feel like a crack addict that needs MORE.

I give the MP a 8/10, as it has some irritating flaws and behaviors that I don't agree with.

Is the campaign unchanged from the demo? That was awful.

First of all, I loved Call of Duty, and CoD 2 was basically CoD + better graphics. So I was pretty excited to play the CoD 4 demo.

Unfortunately, it didn't really live up to my expectations, or the crazy hype it's been getting. The mission started with me and a bunch of guys on a bridge, under fire. I duck behind a car (a ruined hulk of a former car, actually) and it promptly explodes. I wondered why none of the cars the other chaps were hiding behind were exploding, <a href="http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/cod4_4_hr.jpg" target="_blank">or why a car that is clearly far beyond functioning chose THIS VERY MOMENT TO EXPLODE</a>, but I decided that I didn't really care. This time I ran farther and took cover behind a concrete barrier.

So I'm hiding behind a barrier. Barely 10 meters away is a building packed full of enemies. 10-15 enemies, I'd say, all of them firing in my direction and most of them firing AT ME because I'm wearing neon pink armor or something. Some of them are in the open but most of them are ducking behind walls and stuff. The air is FILLED with lead. I'm popping up, shooting a few, ducking, etc. Your typical Call of Duty stuff.

Except Lieutenant Shrek or whatever is yelling at me. He's telling me to advance. This seems like a bad idea, but I heed the Call of Duty and listen to my CO. I of course die immediately upon exiting cover. Reload, past the magic exploding cars (they only blow up when you take cover behind them), back behind the concrete barrier. This time I stick to popping up, shooting, ducking.

But Shrek is still yelling. Over and over. The same line. He just really really wants me dead, I guess. "You want to advance, buddy? Do it yourself, and get cut to ribbons before you make it 2 feet!" is what I was screaming in my head. Unfortunately the screaming in my head did not drown out his screaming. FINALLY I clear most of the building and charge forwards. This shuts Shrek up.

Now we're inside a building. My task here is to take ineffectual pot shots at enemies that I can barely see because my teammates are storming ahead of me and doing all the work. This goes on as I navigate my way through the building. I need night vision to see (although somehow the enemies made it through this area without NV), but really all I can see is my teammates doing all the work. This is on the hardest difficulty, I believe. Finally I'm through the building. My memory's a little fuzzy at this point but I think there was a firefight. Unlike CoD and CoD2 the firefight is not very fun. There are no machinegun nests to circumvent or anything. It's just a straight line, pretty much. The enemies spend half their time running from one piece of cover to the next, all the while leaving their heads exposed, and half the time focus firing on me (stupid neon pink armor). All the guns feel more or less alike, especially in terms of sound.

So anyways we get to this place with a bridge above it. There's an ENTIRE FREAKING CONVOY OF ENEMY TANKS HEADING OUR WAY. My job is to destroy them all with a Javelin launcher that some dead guy was assigned to. This sounds fun! I rush to the top of the building (which, in retrospect, may not have been necessary, as nobody was shooting at me) and pick up the Javelin just in time to see the first enemy tank arrive. I shoot it. The next tank shows up. I shoot it. I killed 3 or 4, I think. That was... uh... well, pointless I guess. Shooting an enemy tank consists of aiming at it until the launcher locks on, then firing. FUN! Wait, no.

Then we move through some more city streets. Our objective is an immobilized friendly tank that we need to protect. We make it to the tank, the only casualty being a friendly guy I shoot in the face for his gun (nobody cared). I say "the only casualty" because my allies are pretty much safe from everyone except me, because the terrorists or whatever have devoted their lives to shooting me and only me.

Oh, and the tank! Wait, no, they don't shoot at the tank. That wouldn't do anything! You'd need, like, a rocket launcher to hurt it.

But approximately half the enemies are carrying rocket launchers on their backs. This doesn't look good for Mr. Downed Tank!

Luckily, Mr. Downed Tank is up against Mr. Down Syndrome times 100, because none of the enemies actually bother USING these RPGs attached to their back. Instead, they run straight up to the tank. I think they were going to place explosives or something once they made it there, but of course they just get cut down by my teammates, who, because I'm the only one getting shot at, only have to worry about gunning down hapless terrorists who don't understand how an RPG works.

As I'm taking cover behind some wonderful scrap of metal twice my height that just happens to be there, watching my teammates nail the terrorists while the bad guys who have bothered to fire dump round after round into my cover, I decide that this is not as fun as CoD or CoD2. I don't feel like I'm in an action movie. I don't feel like this is an intense firefight. I don't feel like I'm in a war. I feel like everywhere I go, my job is to get shot at by everyone while my teammates (the ones I haven't killed) do the fighting for me. Sure, I could shoot back, but that's dangerous. It's not epic, it's chaotic. This isn't the chaos of war. This is the chaos of a game that doesn't reward moving forwards so much as it rewards, well, hiding behind a giant piece of metal.

So anyways, we fight off the people who apparently carry rocket launchers as decorations. The only enemies left are 2 or 3 people in a crappy old house behind boarded up windows. Of course, we are a squad of marines with automatic weapons, so when faced with enemies cowering behind 2x4s, we choose the only logical solution: shoot them.

Well, that's what I chose. Unfortunately they're magic 2x4s. My bullets will penetrate kevlar but not wood. So how am I going to get 3 people out of a house?

The obvious answer is to track down the nearest AA gun, kill its operators, and then drop some sort of beacon so that a friendly Cobra attack helicopter can hover 10 feet off the ground and fire multiple missiles into the house, killing all three (3!) occupants. This also destroys the magic 2x4s and gouges out a bit of the wall around them, but leaves the rest of the house eerily unscathed except for some smoke. Odd, that.

Actually, the whole thing was odd. I called in a Cobra? To deal with 3 people in the house? Couldn't he have taken out that tank convoy? Or anyone else, for that matter? And I had to kill the AA gun first? There's another one about 100 meters away, merrily firing tracers into the air. I can see it. The artists probably think it's atmospheric. Unfortunately it's more than close enough to blow the Cobra chopper away if it felt like it.

And what's up with the Cobra pilot? Hovering like, 10 meters in the air? At night? In a half-ruined city? He'd be lucky not to hit a powerline, let alone the exploding cars that follow me around. And if there was one (just ONE) more enemy left somewhere in the labyrinth of ruined buildings we just ran through, he could fire an RPG and take out the silly Cobra that came way too close. Oh, right. They can't work the RPGs. I guess the chopper is safe. <a href="http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/cod4_2_hr.jpg" target="_blank">Check out how low he hovers, though</a>.

I go back to Corporal Shrek, who has helpfully drawn a kindergarten-quality map on the downed tank in order to illustrate whatever crazy stuff I'm going to watch my squad do next, as I cower behind a handy piece of cover. Then the demo ends. I think about replaying it, like I replayed CoD and CoD2 a bunch, but then I realize I have better things to do with my life than ponder why I need to call in a Cobra to break some 2x4s.

I call him Shrek because he totally looks like Shrek, BTW. He's a monster of a man, which might explain why he compensates by ordering me to my death with the same sound byte over and over.

So yeah, is the full game anything like that? If it is, I'll pass. If it's awesome though I might think about it.

Like Tycho, I didn't fall for the whole "cinematic experience (tm?)". It was well done for its time in CoD and CoD 2, but it feels sort of dumb now.
It all boils down to having everything in numbers times (x) two hundred.
And that guy, the sergeant or lieutenant or whatever - I hope to god our troops (well I know, ours don't) are not under command of such a squealer in the real war.
To me, It all boiled down to yelping: (caps for effect)
"USE COVERING FIRE", "TAKE THEM OUT", "SILENCE THOSE GUNS", "INSURGENTS HAVE US PINNED DOWN, REQUESTING ARTILLERY BARRAGES, FIRE FOR EFFECT, FOX CHARLIE HOTDOG" "MEDIIIC" "aaarrRRRPEEEGEEE, aaarrRRRPEEEGEEE" "LET'S GET 'EM BOYS" "HOOARRH"

Oh and Tycho, you had one thing wrong. TWO cobra attack helicopters were called in.

    TWO!!

If the people in charge actually fall over a real insurgent <i>bunker</i> and not just a house with cardboard stuck in the windows... - Are there even nukes enough in the world?

    (also: discontent)

Well, hey, I'm just as mad as you are. CoD and CoD 2 are 2 of my favorite single player games and I don't get a lot of enjoyment from watching my hopes and dreams dashed up against the cold, barren rocks of "this demo sucks." I would not dispute that it's pretty good as far as console games go, though. Heck, Halo's pretty good as far as console games go and I wouldn't play that if I had a copy of Doom on hand. The first Doom. I'd play it over Doom 3 I guess.

And pardzh, well, good luck with overcoming that crushing fear of words. Someday, buddy. Someday.

I'll be picking it up on euro release day. I'm pretty excited about it but also a bit worried that it might indeed not be as epic as it wants to be. For many people (and myself), CoD was at the time a breahtaking experience. Cod2, more of the same, but eh, it was fun. Judging from the demo of 4, it's going to be more of the same again, just in a completely different setting. I'll see how if turns out. Got pretty big hopes for the multiplayer as well, should be fun for a while. TF2 is getting stale really fast.

And no, WW2 is not fun anymore. It's been milked to death.

Yeah it's annoying to no end, they don't stop respawning unless you basically rush forward while on the brink of death and being shot at by 50 guys. when you get in the building/to a position then they stop respawning. it's hella ######.

    But guys... It's "MODERN WARFARE!!"

This HAS to be the most original idea for a tactical shooter ever.

Yeah, that endless respawn is incredibly frustrating, especially on higher difficulties. You basically have to kill the most dangerous enemies that are actively shooting at you, sprint forward to some new cover, and wait for your guys to advance and start helping you out. Then repeat. It doesn't help that since it's now modern warfare, everyone has an automatic weapon, whereas in the older COD games, you could at least expect not to get hit every once in a while.

I do like the multiplayer, though.

My problem with the demo was the fact that, when compared to the Call of Duty demo, this was literally nothing more than the following:

    Small movement portion
    Shooting Gallery
    Stairway
    Shooting Gallery
    Small movement portion
    HUGE shooting gallery.
    Go to waypoint
Use weapon at waypoint to blow up tanks(This was actually rather impressive)
Run through well crafted area that has no fighting(but would've been GREAT for it)
    Shooting Gallery

Now note: By "Shooting Gallery", I mean I can litterally stand/crouch in <i>one place</i> and shoot from there and hit every single enemy. No movement required.

Combine that with the most ######tastic porting job I've ever witnessed(Halo 1 on PC ran better comparably than this- Nevermind the fact that the demo CRASHED when changing resolutions, when I finally edited a file to start in the right resolution, it then ran so bad I couldn't believe it. This is a system that does the Unreal Tournament 3 demo at 1680x1050 with full settings at 20-30 fps, and CoD4 is dying? Yeah, bull######.), and this became a quick Gamefly rental.

MAYBE my rental will change my mind, but that demo was so atrocious it made me entirely forget how much fun I had in the MP Beta. It was beyond bad, it was a waste of time vast enough to cause hate.

I thought the graphics were pretty nice, although the engine is definitely beginning to show its age. Really, though, it feels like a step back from the previous CoD games in terms of game design. It seems like they took many opportunities to make the game worse instead of better.

Yeah, I'm so sick of shooters that throw me into expansive and varied environments... what I want is a game where every single level consists entirely of bland desert maps, where every gun is a variation of the M16/M4. Because that's NEVER been done before.

On a side note... I haven't actually played CoD4, i'm just ######ing sick of DESERT.

This HAS to be the most original idea for a tactical shooter ever.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Still WW2 is better. Milked to death as was said here, well perhaps... But it is still the better setting for an arcady game like CoD... "Modern warfare" just doesn't float my boat in an arcady setting... Don't they market this "realism". Go away with that crap if you have an arcady console engine in the first place. Also cinematic scenes, that is not an excuse to overdramatise stuff so you as the player have the "best" seat in the house to suck in bullets like a magnet...

    I believe it goes like this <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    (CoD = CoD2) > CoD3 >>>>>>> CoD4

    Sidenote/offtopic:
I do however want to see vehicle realism in it, I believe it was CoD2 when you are driving a Crusader and they start whining about a few puny Panzer2's. In that instance I was like: "So what is that P2 going to do other then tickle my tank and scratch the paintjob?". Only to discover they actually penetrated my freaking armor, even on the front. The Panzer2 it's turret is not able to do that, yet in CoD2 it did. Why didn't they put a Panzer3 (J or L) in there to make it believable...

    (or was it CoD3? I'm not entirely sure now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )

    They do have some mighty fine taunts in there <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Is that the Tiger? Or the panther? Can't remember which has that taunt. (might be a third one, so long since last time I played)

Note sure, but it is probably the Tiger. That is kind of a big 57 tons lump of unpenetrable steel.

    going off-topic in off-topic is quite off-topic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

So I just completed the full game as my gamestore had it early and I marathon'd through it, so i'll give my opinion (singleplayer only)

Yes, the gameplay and engine are more of the same, not much 'modern' there. However, the athmosphere and storyline were very well done and because it <b>was</b> modern warfare and not just ww2 shootan #817, it was easy enough to forget you were playing on that same engine with the same gameplay, it felt different enough just because of the setting. The demo level was in my experience a very weak showcasing of just how awesome most of the levels are in terms of epicness.

I had an awesome time and experience anyways, give it a chance, you really won't be disappointed.

But I gave it a chance, and I was disappointed! It seemed like they tried really hard to make the demo epic. Exploding cars, anti-aircraft guns, two Cobra choppers hovering 10 feet (not even 10 meters) above your head blowing apart the 3 people who you couldn't kill for some reason, endless waves of respawning bad guys... how much more can they do to it?

Mix it together and you got your answer:

Exploding People Hovering 10 choppers above your head, blowing apart reason while spawning endless waves of bad anti-aircraft cars.

After playing the SP in full,

Well, the levels that DON'T have endless respawns of enemies are fun. The ones that do completely beat my sense of "There can't be hundreds of them" down.

    But I will say, the <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>nuclear scene</span> is a marvel.

someone preach about the multiplayer please. if i am to buy it'd only be for mp so i'd like to know if it's any good. the beta on the 360 was pretty cool.

Aight, 5 hours of played in MP so I guess I can give you some info.

There's a ton of different game modes (8-something): DM, TDM, your typical Domination, Search and Destroy which seems pretty popular which is basically CS-like gameplay in which you have one life, your team spawns at A, other team spawns at B etc. There's also a mode with respawns and 2 bomb sites which also seems pretty familiar. Also some others, but meh, it's all more or less the same with some twists.

There's a leveling system much like Battlefield games; if you play (well) you get xp which unlocks challenges, weapons, add-ons for weapons, and 'perks' which are upgrades, think better accuracy, more grenades in your inventory, more health, more stamina for running, that sorta stuff. With all this you can basically make your own custom kit and select which weapons, which weapon addons, and which perks you want so all this allows for quite some customization which is cool. I don't know if there's a problem with guns you unlock later being more powerful than the earlier rifles though, i've also heard here and there that some weapons are really overpowered at the moment but I guess they'll balance it later.

Gameplay itself hasn't changed much from earlier cod games so you'll feel right at home if you've played those. If you haven't, it leans a lot to the CS side of fps gaming; slow gameplay, very tactical, and playerskill seems primarily based on things like situational awareness, experience, map knowledge and all that jazz, although aim is not at all unimportant of course.

I think it's fun and can see myself playing for a while, but it might just be the new and exciting factor.
