<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone got an extra $100?</div>So yeah, I'm a <a href="http://www.ronpaul2008.com/" target="_blank">Ron Paul</a> guy. This thread isn't about arguing or trying to prove points one way or the other- its about today's donations. The goal is getting to 10 million in 1 day as a way to force the media to report on the huge support for the guy(and thusly get him heard more).

The idea is 100,000 people donating $100 each.

Currently, <a href="http://ronpaulgraphs.com/nov_5_extended_total.html" target="_blank">were at $400,000 in the first 4 hours</a>- thats pretty good, but not on path to hit it. Then again, I doubt much of anybody is awake.

So, anyone else donating $100? Anyone surprised about the money made? Anyone not heard of the guy?

I realize he's a long shot, but this is the best long shot we've had in a <i>really long</i> time. Heres to hoping.

I'm not going to donate because his website doesn't gracefully degrade if javascript is disabled.

    That and I'm not american.

    --Scythe--

P.S. Who is this guy again?

    P. P. S. S. After reading <a href="http://www.ronpaul2008.com/about/" target="_blank">this</a> I get the impression that he's going for the "Vote for me because I'm good." angle to persuade the average idiot to vote for him. The sentence "Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress." particularly stands out as a blatant piece of bull-shaggery. "Probably"? That means either they didn't bother to check, or that the first half of the statement is false.

    P. P. P. S. S. S. Remember I'm totally apolitical about all this crap. I couldn't really care less who's at the helm as america is steered into the ground.

Well, here are a few things that are from the <a href="http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/" target="_blank">issues</a> page(at the top):

He's uber-pro Constitution. If the Constitution doesn't allow it, he doesn't vote for it. He's ran as a Republican in every one of elections he's run in for the House, and back in 1988 ran for President as the Libertarian candidate.

He voted against the war in Iraq, and is the only candidate that is still on the stage in either Democrats or Republicans that is committed to getting our troops out of Iraq in the shortest timetable possible. Unlike the others, he says that yes, by the end of his first term, they WILL be out of Iraq. The way he talks, the general consensus is that he wants to be out in 4 months.

His other big thing is that he's about as anti-tax as it gets. He wants to get rid of the IRS, lower and get rid of tons of different taxes, and also decrease the size of government to a small fraction of it's current state. As he puts it, the private industry always does things better in the end than if the Government took over. Every time we've even gotten a little involved, its been a disaster(example: The current state of the American medical system). His ideas are pretty extensive on how to properly take care of the economy, and it'd take forever for me to explain them.

As to the "probably", its most likely because of the way the bills are authored and co-authored: Sometimes politicians say they authored them when really they are just grabbing them from other places.

I personally hope people are fed up enough with republicans from the last 8 years that we can get a democrat in office next year... not that it will matter much. kinda like choosing between <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treehouse_of_Horror_VII#Citizen_Kang" target="_blank">Kang and Kodos</a>. I also like a big government. We could use some nationalized healthcare and all that.

I could go on, actually, but suffice to say I'll give Ron Paul some money once he's able to tell me why he's against handouts for other people but needs them so desperately himself.

"Hundred bucks for the Guy" doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Now if his detractors were really clever, they'd take this opportunity to burn him in effigy. They could always pass it off as "just going along with the theme" afterwards. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

He's against government handouts to the people, not handouts altogether. As he's running for President, part of the system is helping your candidate any way you can.

So it's okay for part of the "running for President" system to include handouts to help people out, because otherwise some people might never get elected, but it's not okay for the government system to include handouts to keep people from, say, dying due to an easily treatable disease.

Im not sure what to think of Ron Paul, so many people seem to think he's the second coming of jesus. It makes me very skeptical, I've learned that the more people think something is right the more likely it is to be wrong. Whatever.

A lot of the questions and comments people are making are either explained in his "Issues" section, or perhaps, in this Youtube video of when he got questioned by tons of folks at Google:

I personally think his <a href="http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Ron_Paul" target="_blank">Wikiquote</a> page is a good way to get a feel for who he his.

What really sold me on Ron Paul was his apparently genuine love of freedom. Unlike presidential candidates of the last few decades, he doesn't seem to have any interest in increasing the power of the federal government and, in fact, says it already goes to far. After the last 8 years of power grabs I find that especially refreshing.

As far as republicans go I think he's the best. I don't agree with some of his social issues but since he's for Federal Gov't not regulating that stuff it evens out.

I'd vote for him over Hillary, but not Obama.

    Not sure if I'll donate.

I'm the exact other way around. Obama to me is the candidate if RP doesn't win the Primary.

And honestly, I doubt Hillary is gonna win the primary. If she does...then, well, America's ######ed.

    Because she's a woman!

I dunno, a lot of people hate her. I'm sure they come up with all sorts of amazing reasons. Mine is her brazen political maneuvering at the expense of any set of values.

Edit: Listening to this Candidates@Google video now. This guy's pretty funny. The fact that he thinks the "Invisible Hand" will fix everything is my biggest beef with him. Honestly though I think that door will swing both ways and we'd see fewer hand outs for corps as well as a smaller gov't all around.

Of all the Republican candidates, Ron Paul is the only one I'd even consider voting for. Not because I find myself agreeing with him on almost all the issues, but because all the other Republican candidates are insane.

What do LGBT issues have to do with the federal government? Does a candidate have to come out and say "I don't support putting ######s in death camps" for you to believe that he cares about their freedom?

I wouldn't really call him ultra pro-life either, based on what I've read, since he sees it as a matter of degrees and he recognizes that there are situations, like rape, where it should be allowed. Even so, he believes it is up to the individual states to deal with that issue, which I disagree with, but its not like hes going to force an abortion ban or anything.

Ultimately thats one of the things that I think makes him such a great candidate: He doesn't want to force his beliefs on others.

My understanding is that since Paul Advocates a reduction in centralised power and supports the right of each state to individually legislate for all kinds of things ( gun control, substance prohibition, abortion etc. ) he has been labelled as 'ultra pro life'. When someone says 'ultra pro life' to me, I think of creationists burning down abortion clinics and cutting off the hands of doctors that perform the procedures.
