So this is my final computer upgrade for the next 6 months to a year.

<div class="IPBDescription">And all I'm spending is $210.</div>Hey look! Brand spankin' new product.

<a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143116" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814143116</a>

Thats right. 8600 GTOC, with <b>512mb</b> of VRAM.

Now, the beautiful thing about the entire 8600 line is that the cards for some reason do INCREDIBLY well under really bad heat conditions, so they're perfect for me(darn mid-california).

I already know this is the card I'm getting. The question now is a simple one that I expect to be ridiculed for. HAVE FUN KIDS

Do I need to uninstall then re-install my NVidia drivers on my PC when I get this? I've got a 7900GT right now(that when it overheats artifacts like its trying to be a <a href="http://creativetechnology.salford.ac.uk/fuchs/modules/input_output/Cage_Duchamp/images/J_Pollock_lavendermist.jpg" target="_blank">Pollock</a>). Just wondrin'.

And also: For those using Gutsy Gibbon, do the new Linux NVidia drivers support 8600s yet?

Oh, and the reason this is my last upgrade in awhile:
<img src="http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/images/sport/07-ninja250r.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Before ye laugh, realize its my learning bike, so its weak and slow intentionally. Never ridden before, but considering I come from a long line of motorcycle aficionados(since the WW2 Harley that my Papa took off of a junker lot in Nebraska, to my dad's new <a href="http://www.cyclequest.com/Arizona/Classifieds%20AZ/Imports%20AZ/BMW8.JPG" target="_blank">BMW R1200RT</a>), its time I get a bike and learn.

I hope there is more to your wanting to purchase a motorbike than just because two people you are related to also happen to have a motorbike.

But hey, congratulations on buying a computer part. In answer to your rather redundant question, I am pretty sure you will not need to. If there are any problems just install the driver again. It only takes a few minutes.

In any case, the 8600 line is way underpowered compared to the 8800 line, and there's going to be a performance increase/price drop on the 8X00s soon, plus the release of the 9X00s. Now is a bad time to buy an 8X00, and an even worse time to buy an 8600. And a motorcycle is what you drive if you want to die. You're 34 times more likely to die and 8 times more likely to get injured per mile traveled on a murdercycle than in a passenger car, or something like that. I guess you save gas though.

Definitely. I've wanted a bike for a hell of a long time 'cause its a hobby I'm nearly sure I'll enjoy. On top of that it'll be a great way to spend time with a ton of my friends who also have bikes, and quite frankly, I haven't heard a single person say they aren't fun.

I don't have it yet, but I'll be getting it mid-winter(best time to look for any motorcycle- prices tend to be hundreds if not thousands of dollars lower, and there are more around), and it should cost about $1500 to $2000.

Don't bother getting a motorcycle that is worth more than $3k as your first bike, EVER. I don't care if you're a multigajillionaire, getting anything more than some newby bike is a dumb move liable to get you maimed, killed, and otherwise dismembered because you just wanted to be 'cool'. Start newby, and move up from there. Don't get a nice bike til its at LEAST your 3rd one.

Really? DOUBLE performance? Why is it that at none of the review sites I've seen any kind of negative opinion about the 8600, but you guys just have mounds and mounds of it? Though, thanks Epidimic for that link- I was planning on spending $300 initially and was pleased when I saw $200, but going back up is fine if I'm getting that much of a performance difference.

Anyone have links to benchmark differences?

Oh and Tycho: I've been hearing ###### like that for years and years and years. A few things I wonder though:
They say you are 8 times more likely to get in a wreck and be injured in a motorcycle accident. 34 times more likely to die, etc. 2 times more if you're talking on a cell phone, etc, blah blah blah.

My question is, What is the base percentage? If the usual percentage of me getting in a wreck is miniscule(like .34%) and this is is 20 times as likely for me to get in a wreck('cause no one notices you on a motorcycle- 'You're invisible', as they say), that means I'm at a whopping 4%. Now, considering that my Shaman in WoW, with Lightning Overload, has a 5% chance to get an extra spell out of nowhere, has seen that happen only twice out of over 30,000 times of casting that spell...well, the odds roll in my favor.

There's no way to compute how likely you are to be in a crash without knowing how much you drive, because that's one of the biggest factors. It's not enough just to drive at all: the more you drive, the more likely you are to be in a crash. There are a million other factors which make it hard to make straight comparisons like that. All we compare is what happens after the crash, because that's a lot more regular, or at least, that's going to be similar for just about everyone. Statistically.

<!--quoteo(post=1657339:date=Oct 23 2007, 02:05 PM:name=Quaunaut)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Quaunaut @ Oct 23 2007, 02:05 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1657339"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Now, considering that my Shaman in WoW, with Lightning Overload, has a 5% chance to get an extra spell out of nowhere, has seen that happen only twice out of over 30,000 times of casting that spell...well, the odds roll in my favor.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I understand statistics just fine. Rolling the dice is rolling the dice nonetheless. Whether its the four hundredth time or the first, your chances of getting in that 4% margin are the same. Mmkthx.

I like how well the mothers of the world have pussified people into completely disregarding the awesomeness of motorcycles. And seriously sonic, a death rocket? The thing takes nearly 10 seconds to get to 60, and nearly a minute and a half to hit 100. It may bring death, but by no means is it a 'rocket' of death.

Yeah, they're more dangerous than cars. I'll easily volunteer you that fact. But I'm willing to take that risk for the fun of the hobby, quite frankly.

Thats not what I'm saying, and your oversimplification is an awesome example of your usual ######baggery.

I'll be as safe about it as I can. I know I'm not even gonna try much beyond the basics for at least the first few months, and I *may* try hitting 80mph once I'm used to it. I know nearly all of the 'rules' that motorcyclists tell new motorcyclists(Remember that you're invisible, don't ride in the middle of a lane, and preferably be on the left part of the lane, etc). I'm also only going to be riding with my Dad for the first while to be sure that I always have immediate help if something goes wrong. After a month or two I may start taking it to work.

    lol, this thread is harsh.

But yeah.. just, be safe and sht. You sound like you're a lot smarter than I used to be when I started driving.. and I'm not that much smarter now anyway. I'm just getting off a suspended license.

Shoulda suspended it longer, Mr.Man ;O

First, I second this guy's recommendations, I'd even tell you to spare the effort researching benchmarks. This is a common knowledge/common sense choice:

I'll take double performance over 200MB more Vram for 70 dollars more, thank you.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Second, proper driver removal is important if physically changing cards. This page explains the process thoroughly (it's part of a larger guide, but you only need this specific page): <a href="http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_3.html" target="_blank">http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_3.html</a>

That website is annoyingly verbose, though, so here's what I do (order is important):

<ol type='1'><li>With the old card in place, do a standard uninstall of the NVidia drivers via Add/Remove Programs, then reboot</li><li>When starting back up, windows will detect and try to "search for new drivers" for your old card, <b>don't let it</b></li><li>Run <a href="http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=driversweeper" target="_blank">Driver Sweeper</a> to "remove driver leftovers from your system."
Download the latest drivers for your new 8X00 series card, and shut down</li><li>Physically change the cards, then boot up normally</li><li>On first startup with your new card installed, don't allow windows to "search for new drivers"</li><li>Install new drivers, reboot, <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /></li></ol>

Sir, I could not agree more, and I grant you well wishes on your cycling hobby. A family tradition is nothing to second guess because some pencil-neck pedant on the NS forums is too Asperger to imagine anything another person's point of view.

At least my pencil-neck isn't going to snap when I hit a metal plate that wasn't there last time at 55 and crash.

Instead it will atrophy, its muscles having seen little physical exertion due to a pussified fear of all things risky; this whimpish approach will procure you a boring and wearisome journey into old age, and only then with decades of hindsight will you lament as you come to the realization: I never really lived!
